This will be achieved by addressing the following issues. Firstly, the history and principle of P2P networks will be outlined. Secondly, it will be analysed whether P2P file-sharing can be seen as an act of 'theft'. Thirdly, the paper will examine how P2P networks are used and what cultural significance they represent. Fourthly, the future of P2P networks will be debated and finally the results of this paper will be summarised and discussed.

An ample research study of music downloaders based in the Argentinean music market was designed and carried out for the purpose of this paper, and its results are exclusively commented here. It is the author's belief that this study does very well in representing the Latin American region's outlook for the legitimate music business going forward and to a moderately large extent, the global one. In the end, personal conclusions from the author will set a critical point of view from within the music industry, with an emphasis on what principles are applied by me daily in my present position as Managing Director of a major label in the region formed by Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have the music and movie industries lost the battle to criminalize downloading? This penetrating and informative book provides readers with the perfect systematic critical guide to the file-sharing phenomenon. Combining inter-disciplinary resources from sociology, history, media and communication studies and cultural studies, David unpacks the economics, psychology and philosophy of file-sharing. The book carefully situates the reader in a field of relevant approaches including Network Society Theory, Post-structuralism and ethnographic research. It uses this to launch into a fascinating enquiry into: * the rise of file-sharing, * the challenge to intellectual property law posed by new technologies of communication, * the social psychology of cyber crime * and the response of the mass media and multi-national corporations. The book concludes with a balanced, eye-opening assessment of alternative cultural modes of participation and their relationship to cultural capitalism. This is a landmark work in the sociology of popular culture and cultural criminology. It fuses a deep knowledge of the music industry and the new technologies of mass communication with a powerful perspective on how multinational corporations seek to monopolize markets, how international and state agencies defend property, while a global multitude undermine and/or reinvent both.

Book excerpt: The impact of digital technology on the musical economy has been profound. From its production, reproduction, distribution, and consumption, the advent of MP3 and the use of the Internet as a medium of distribution has brought about a significant transformation in the way that music is made, how it is purchased and listened to, and, significantly, how the musical economy itself is able to reproduce itself. In the late 1990s the obscure practice of 'ripping' tracks from CDs through the use of compression programmes was transformed from the illegal hobby of a few thousand computer specialists to a practice available to millions of people worldwide through the development of peer-to-peer computer networks. This continues to have important implications for the viability of the musical economy. At the same time, the production of music has become more accessible and the role of key gatekeepers in the industry—such as record companies and recording studios— has been undermined, whilst the increased accessibility of music at reduced cost via the Internet has revalorised live performance, and now generates revenues higher than recorded music. The early 21st century has provided an extraordinary case study of an industry in flux, and one that throws light on the relationship between culture and economy, between passion and calculation. This book provides a theoretically grounded account of the implications of digital technology on the musical economy, and develops the concept of the musical network to understand the transformation of this economy over space and through time.

Not just because political science barely engages with anything musical, but also because it is clear that many opportunities for critical scholarship and reflection on global politics and economics are present in the spaces and relationships created by organized sound. It is easy to focus on the textual elements of music, but there is more at stake than just the words. Critical reflection on the intersections between music and politics also need to take into account the visceral and non-verbal elements such as counterpoint and harmony, polyphony and dissonance, noise, rhymes, rhythms, performance and the visual/aural dimensions to music-making.

It offers the first book-length social scientific analysis of the character and impacts of a new system of manufacturing that is in formation. The book will be of interest to urban planners, policy makers, social scientists, futurologists, economists, as well as general readers by offering inquiry on this future upheaval in the means of production.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, the scope of copyright and patent law has grown significantly, strengthening property rights, even when such rights seem to infringe upon other, more basic, priorities. This book investigates the ways in which activists, scholars, and communities are resisting the expansion of copyright and patent law in the information age. Debora J. Halbert explores how an alternative framework for understanding intellectual property - including about how we ought to think about the issues, the development of social movements around specific issues, and civil disobedience - has developed. Each chapter in the book discusses how resistance is developing in relation to a particular copyright or patent issue such as: access to patented medication access to copyrighted information and music via the Internet the patenting of genetic material. This controversial book examines the ways in which the idea of intellectual property is being re-thought by the victims of an over-expansive legal system. It will appeal to students and researchers from a range of disciplines, from law and political science to computer science, with an interest in intellectual property.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of "Music Piracy Culture on the Internet research" was to identify the motivations behind online music piracy on the Internet through Peer-to-peer (P2P) Networks and opinions on copyright laws. The research was carried out as a Master's Thesis in the Digital Culture program at the University of Jyväskylä. Quantitative research methodology was utilized in the form of questionnaires, which were distributed for two weeks through the mailing list at the University of Jyväskylä and personal invitations. Analysis of the questionnaires revealed opinions that people conduct music file sharing on P2P networks because it is convenient, promotes musicians and is environmentally friendly. In addition, the research discovered the growing popularity of online streaming as an alternative to downloading. Based on the research, some recommendations that can be proposed to music producers and musicians in the near future include; more education on copyright issues, more promotion of online music streaming, promoting downloads of legal music files as an environmentally-friendly choice and making online music shopping more convenient for customers.
