Book Synopsis Leisure and Feminist Theory by : Betsy Wearing
Download or read book Leisure and Feminist Theory written by Betsy Wearing and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1998-12-04 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wide-ranging and challenging, this book offers a host of new insights into how leisure theory has handled the question of gender difference and inequality. Providing a critical introduction to the leading positions in leisure theory, Betsy Wearing guides the reader through their strengths and weaknesses from a feminist perspective. This book draws attention to the various leisure experiences that women encounter and construct in their everyday lives and the meanings that these experiences have for them. Her perspective takes into account such poststructuralist ideas as multiple subjectivities of women and multiple femininities; the possibilities of resistance to male dominance in leisure; the potential through leisure of rewriting masculine and feminine scripts; and leisure as a site of struggle to challenge hegemonic masculinity.

Book Synopsis Dimensions of Choice by : Karla A. Henderson
Download or read book Dimensions of Choice written by Karla A. Henderson and published by Ingram. This book was released on 2006 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dimensions of Choice (Second Edition) is an introductory text on the philosophy, theory, methods, and techniques applied to interpretive research and qualitative approaches in parks, recreation, tourism, sport, and leisure (PRTSL). The first edition of this book appeared in 1991 at a time when one could almost count on two hands the number of leisure researchers using qualitative approaches. Applying the possibilities of a qualitative approach directly to the park, recreation, and leisure field is promising, and over the past 15 years many more researchers in PRTSL have applied these approaches. This book contains many of the basic (but rethought) premises of the first edition and is expanded to include new issues such as reflexivity, computer aids, linking and mixed methods, evaluating research reports, and other emerging forms of data collection, analysis, and data presentations. This second edition provides a framework for using qualitative data in PRTSL and is designed for anyone who is interested in examining the dimensions of choice pertaining to research conceptualization, design, and analysis including practicing professionals who might want to consider using qualitative approaches for "in-house" research and evaluation in a broad range of recreation services, such as camps, outdoor education, public parks and recreation, youth-serving agencies, sports marketing, tourism promotion, special event planning, and clinical/community therapeutic recreation settings. This text is divided into three parts: (a) the evolution of the use of qualitative approaches applied to PRTSL; (b) a discussion of the methods commonly associated with using qualitative data, including field research and in-depth interviewing, focus groups and image-based analysis; and (c) the procedures and techniques common to most qualitative approaches. Not everything about qualitative methods can be covered in any book, but in this book the reader will be exposed to a broad explanation of possibilities, will learn how choice might be applied to research and evaluation questions in the PRTSL field, and will gain an understanding and appreciation for how and why choices influence research."--Publisher's website.
Book Synopsis Both Gains and Gaps by : Karla A. Henderson
Download or read book Both Gains and Gaps written by Karla A. Henderson and published by Venture Publishing (PA). This book was released on 1996 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is a book-in-progress that elaborates on issues about women, gender, and leisure across the life span. The text is an update of Leisure of One's Own (1989) and contains 80% new, revised, and updated material. Although many gains have been made in understanding women's leisure, much remains to be learned. Both Gains and Gaps provides further information about women and the issues that surround both the gains and gaps associated with the construct we commonly call leisure. This textbook serves as an introduction to issues and questions concerning women and leisure. Building on both leisure studies and women's studies, Henderson, Bialeschki, Shaw, and Freysinger offer a social-psychological analysis of women and their leisure from feminist perspectives. No prior knowledge of women's studies or leisure studies is assumed in this definitive work.

Book Synopsis Psychology of Physical Activity by : Stuart Biddle
Download or read book Psychology of Physical Activity written by Stuart Biddle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-11 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The positive benefits of physical activity for physical and mental health are now widely acknowledged, yet levels of physical inactivity continue to be a major concern throughout the world. Understanding the psychology of physical activity has therefore become an important issue for scientists, health professionals and policy-makers alike as they address the challenge of behaviour change. Psychology of Physical Activity provides comprehensive and in-depth coverage of the fundamentals of exercise psychology, from mental health, to theories of motivation and adherence, and to the design of successful interventions for increasing participation. Now publishing in a fully revised, updated and expanded fourth edition, Psychology of Physical Activity is still the only textbook to offer a full survey of the evidence base for theory and practice in exercise psychology, and the only textbook that explains how to interpret the quality of the research evidence. As the field continues to grow rapidly, the new edition expands the behavioural science content of numerous important topics, including physical activity and cognitive functioning, automatic and affective frameworks for understanding physical activity involvement, new interventions designed to increase physical activity (including use of new technologies), and sedentary behaviour. A full companion website offers useful features to help students and lecturers get the most out of the book during their course, including multiple-choice revision questions, PowerPoint slides and a test bank of additional learning activities. Psychology of Physical Activity is the most authoritative, engaging and up-to-date book on exercise psychology currently available. It is essential reading for all students working in behavioural medicine, as well as the exercise and health sciences.
