Book excerpt: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is gaining rapid acceptance as a means to track a wide array of manufactured objects. Currently, RFID technologies have shown promise in transportation (e.g., smart fare cards) and commerce (e.g., inventory control) for a variety of uses and are likely to find many new applications in both military and civilian areas if and when current technical issues are resolved. There are a number of policy concerns (e.g., privacy), however, that will become more crucial as the technology spreads. This report presents a summary of a workshop, held by the NRC at the request of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, to explore many of the key technical and policy issues. Several important themes that are likely to govern expansion of RFID technology emerged from the workshop and are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RFID and the Internet of Things shows how RFID has transformed the supply chain over the last decade and examines the manufacturing, logistics and retail aspects of RFID. This monograph considers the related cost/benefit of RFID in these business environments. The authors describe a vision of an "Internet of Things", where each participating object has a digital shadow with related information stored in cyberspace. RFID and the Internet of Things introduces the reader to the relevant hardware and software as well as to standards and architectures. It then presents several case studies and uses cases showing how RFID can be used in manufacturing and retail with a focus on intra-enterprise applications and local benefits. The authors move further down the supply chain, discussing RFID applications in logistics and the perspectives for an Internet of Things. This is followed by a discussion of cost/benefit analyses of RFID implementations. The volume discusses possible security and privacy risks of RFID and presents several architecture proposals for a less centralized Internet of Things. The authors conclude with a summary and outlook.

When objects are processed, an RFID reader is used to read information from the tags attached to the objects. The information will then be used with the data stored in the back-end databases to support the handling of business transactions. Like any information technology (IT), radio frequency identification (RFID) presents security and privacy risks that must be carefully mitigated through management, operational, and technical controls in order to realize the numerous benefits the technology has to offer. When practitioners adhere to sound security engineering principles, RFID technology can help a wide range of organizations and individuals realize substantial productivity gains and efficiencies. These organizations and individuals include hospitals and patients, retailers and customers, and manufacturers and distributors throughout the supply chain. This chapter provides an overview of RFID technology, the associated security and privacy risks, and recommended practices that will enable organizations to realize productivity improvements while safeguarding sensitive information and protecting the privacy of individuals. While RFID security is a rapidly evolving field with a number of promising innovations expected in the coming years, this chapter also focuses on controls that are commercially available today.

Book excerpt: This report describes the full scope of the Department of Defense (DoD) Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) activities with the purpose of identifying RFID-related issues specific to the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). It summarizes DoD Components' status in implementing DoD RFID policy requirements, new DoD uses of active RFID, and progress in the use of passive RFID in the DoD supply chain. The report also addresses relevant standards and RFID training activities. There are several issues for DLA relating to the use of both active and passive RFID. These range from programmatic concerns regarding the need for a common RFID system architecture to practical concerns about the performance impact of reduced power levels. The report recommends actions that may allow potential benefits of emerging RFID technology to streamline DLA operations.

Much of the exciting development in this area is summarized in this book with rigorous analyses and insightful comments. In particular, a systematic overview on RFID security and privacy is provided at both the physical and network level. At the physical level, RFID security means that RFID devices should be identified with assurance in the presence of attacks, while RFID privacy requires that RFID devices should be identified without disclosure of any valuable information about the devices. At the network level, RFID security means that RFID information should be shared with authorized parties only, while RFID privacy further requires that RFID information should be shared without disclosure of valuable RFID information to any honest-but-curious server which coordinates information sharing. Not only does this book summarize the past, but it also provides new research results, especially at the network level. Several future directions are envisioned to be promising for advancing the research in this area.

Book excerpt: Describes a case study of six enterprises that use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags to control access in the workplace to understand their policies about personally identifiable records obtained by sensing RFID-based access cards. These policies have a number of common features, but the policies are neither documented nor shared with employees. While employees ought to be informed about uses of access control system records, implementing traditional fair information practices for such records would be impractical in some situations.
