Book excerpt: Dropping out of high school almost guarantees a life of hardship. The absence of a diploma contributes to poverty, increased crime rates and weakens the economy. To that end, school districts have a moral and ethical responsibility to bring an end to the dropout epidemic. This study was based on an analysis of more than 26,000 Brevard public school students. The researcher used 2006-2007, 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 student data to determine the relationship between race, grade level, ESE status, ELL status, SES, type of promotion and dropping out of school. In addition, the researcher reviewed Student Exit Survey data and face-to-face interview data to determine why students dropped out and identified strategies students felt would have kept them in school. Finally, individual interview data were analyzed to understand the circumstances that encouraged participants to return to earn their diplomas. The researcher recommended use of data management and tracking systems for early identification of potential dropouts so intervention could be delivered at the onset of failure, assignment of trained adult leaders to monitor and intervene for students; enforcement of compulsory school attendance; creation of mechanisms to reduce absenteeism that do not lead to school failure; required intervention for students who are truant; identification and assignment of highly effective teachers to at-risk youth; intervention in classrooms that have high rates of student failure; use of relevant curriculum and employment of instructional practices proven to increase engagement; alignment of intervention strategies with researched practices; gathering of input and feedback from students to determine program effectiveness; creation of meaningful exit interview processes; utilization of survey data to identify and remove school-related barriers and collaboration with community agencies to find meaningful and genuine solutions for students in crisis.

Book excerpt: This interpretive study sought to understand how six GED graduates who dropped out of high school came to be enrolled at a rural community college, and what factors they perceived promoted or impeded their academic persistence and success. Specifically the study focused on student backgrounds, reasons for dropping out of high school, return motivations, and persistence factors influencing retention. Participants were selected based upon the following characteristics: 1) over the age of 21 2) enrolled both fall quarter, 1993 and winter quarter, 1994 3) studied for and took the GED at Yakima Valley Community College (YVCC) 4) received the GED after the test was revised in 1988 5) had earned at least 20 credits at YVCC by the end of fall quarter, 1993 In-depth student interviews and examination of student records provided data for the development of case records. Data analysis resulted in the generation of seven hypotheses. Among them were hypotheses that suggest that the GED was the key to accessing further education for returning adult high school dropouts, and that a primary benefit of passing the GED Tests was an increase in the self-confidence students needed to continue their education. The study also found that GED graduates recognized they may lack academic survival skills due to dropping out of high school, and that they were inclined to use college services for remediation. Four academic integration factors--the accessibility of a sequence of developmental classes, the existence of study skills or freshman orientation classes, the availability of tutoring, and supportive advising--contributed to the persistence and success of GED graduates. Two factors--the drive to become self sufficient, and the ability of students to develop a strong commitment to college through their faith in education to promote life changes--enabled students to persist and succeed. Participants provided evidence that GED graduates can succeed in community college as well as other students who have earned traditional high school degrees when certain academic conditions are in place. Finally, the study demonstrated the positive effect education can have in breaking the cycle of negative family attitudes toward schooling for the next generation.

Employing the use of in-depth interviews, auto-ethnography, and participant observation, this study reports the descriptive findings of twelve GED preparation class students to understand why they left school, what motivates them to return and continue attending preparation classes, and how they will use the credential after they pass the exam. Despite most students reporting a pleasant elementary school experience, students entered high school with a decreased commitment towards schooling and an increased interest in socializing. Eventually, a precipitous drop in participation led them to dropping out of school. Returning to the GED process, for many students, was the product of a sudden life event - whether it was health-related, personal, or economic - students found themselves in a situation where they were inspired to gain the equivalency. Most students planned on entering a career after gaining their equivalency, either with their next step to re-enter the workforce or continue their education. The GED process is not simply about the certification, it is about the personal redemption of the dropout to prove to themselves and their families that they have matured and overcome their situation.

This research follows the efforts of nine students in their struggle to understand why they became candidates for the general equivalency diploma from their reflection on leaving school, their understanding of the outside forces that aided them in their flight from high school, their focus on opportunities life offered assuming they returned to get a general equivalency diploma, the collaboration of family and friends required to ensure their future success and the overall emotion of achieving the general equivalency diploma that would awaken in them a new reason for life. In the end, it would be the general equivalency diploma that would change them and the lives of their families forever.

Using descriptive comparisons, bivariate tests, and propensity-score matched regression models to analyze data from rounds 1-15 of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1997, analyses aim to examine: (1) differential adolescent experiences and contexts between GED recipients and high school graduates; (2) whether differences in adult outcomes between GED recipients and high school graduates can be minimized by accounting for these adolescent contexts and experiences; and (3) adolescent predictors of positive adult outcomes for GED recipients. Additional analyses examine differences in adolescence between GED recipients who went on to obtain a postsecondary credential and those who did not and identify predictors of postsecondary attainment within the GED recipient group. Findings revealed that GED recipients’ contexts and experiences in adolescence were characterized by greater risk exposure (e.g., gang involvement, teen parenthood) in comparison to high school graduates. Collectively, these differences revealed that more risk factors were present in GED recipients’ lives long before they dropped out of high school. Even after accounting for a range of factors from multiple ecological domains in adolescence, GED recipients still had significantly lower household income-to-poverty ratios and lower rates of postsecondary educational attainment than their high school graduate counterparts. However, their general and behavioral health (e.g., alcohol misuse, exercise behaviors) outcomes were either equivalent or better than high school graduates’ outcomes. Looking within the GED recipient group, recipients who eventually completed a postsecondary credential differed in adolescence from those who did not on a number of factors, such as engagement in risky behavior and parental education. Overall, findings suggest that differences between GED recipients and high school graduates existed in a range of ecological domains in adolescence and accounting for these differences attenuated differences in these two groups’ outcomes in adulthood in some cases but not in others. Findings also suggest that GED recipients with a postsecondary credential had different adolescent experiences than recipients without a postsecondary credential. These results signal points for prevention, early intervention, and support for recipients post-GED receipt.

Statistically, few GED graduates succeeded in earning a postsecondary degree or credential, and for women, the odds against them were even greater. The women in this study had social programming about their roles as women and carried responsibilities that interfered with being successful students. Some also struggled with their lack of academic preparation. In this multiple case study, the variety of supports that helped female study participants to successfully surmount the barriers in order to persist in college and to earn at least a baccalaureate degree were identified. Additionally, the women identified the transformations that they perceived in themselves.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors and feelings that contribute to students leaving school and later returning to adult education programs to attain a General Educational Development (GED) credential. This process was found to be ameliorated by the positive factors of literacy, engagement, and resilience. These factors were selected because of their importance to the success of the schooling process and their interrelatedness. When these factors were self-reported at low levels combined with negative social circumstances, it was much more difficult for students to avoid school attrition or to reengage in dropout recovery. An explanatory sequential mixed methods research design was employed with an emancipatory lens facilitated by a supportive listener, as researcher, to examine the voices of a disadvantaged population of high school dropouts who shared their educational journeys and reconnection to school. These personal reports were given through the use of the Survey of Adolescent Reading Attitudes (SARA), The Resilience Scale for Adolescents (READ), and ethnographic interviews. Students felt that the inherent value of a high school credential was equally as important as the desire to garner employment. Literacy, they believed, was a protective factor as a skill that was an early-developed asset; however, that ability alone could not help them prevail in view of overwhelming personal roadblocks and ever increasing complex content material. Literacy skills did help reassure students of the possibility of success when finding a good dropout recovery program to obtain a GED. Students' self-determination, through engagement and resilience, revealed an intrinsic feeling of wanting to reach the educational goal for "myself." A significant link between reading attitudes and resilience was demonstrated in a correlation study with the two established assessment scales.

Research has shown that students of color and those receiving special education services are at an increased risk of transitioning from the public education system to the criminal justice system in what is referred to as the School-to-Prison-Pipeline (Annamma, 2015; Barnes & Motz, 2018; Hart & Mueller, 2012; Pyle et al., 2016). A bigger issue than the graduation rate is understanding what motivates students to return to public education, post-incarceration, to complete their high school requirements as told by the students. For this study, four individuals who were incarcerated but have since earned their high school diploma or completed the General Educational Development test (GED) were selected to participate. All participants (n = 4) received case management services via an agency with a mission of assisting formerly incarcerated youths to reintegrate with society, but specifically with education for the purpose of this study. English is the primary language for all participants – three of whom are male and the fourth is a female student. This narrative study involves each participant engaging in a series of four semi-structured interviews discussing their perceptions of school and incarceration as well as the motivations behind their actions which led to incarceration and their subsequent return to public education. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed with the help of the software program, Dedoose. This study sought to fill a significant gap in research relating to student incarceration and public education reintegration by allowing the participants to share their life experiences. The design of this study allowed for the participants to reflect on their experiences and express what motivated them to make the decisions they have made throughout their lives. Ultimately, this study serves to inform educators on how to best support students at-risk of incarceration and provide effective interventions based on the self-report of individuals who experienced these circumstances.

Book excerpt: In recent years, an increasing amount of attention has been given to the dropout crisis in the United States, particularly in urban areas. What has not been emphasized as often is the substantial percentage of students who drop out of the traditional educational system, but subsequently drop back into alternative educational programs. This dropping back in is particularly evident in the "adolescentization" of the GED, as currently in the United States, one out of every three GED's is awarded to a person eighteen years old or younger (Murnane, Willett, & Boudett, 1995). However, little research is devoted to describing the life and/or educational experiences of those involved in re-entry (Rumberger, 1987; Metzer, 1997; Altenbaugh, Engel, & Martin, 1995; Chuang, 1997). In this study, thirty students in an urban GED program (GEL) were interviewed regarding their educational experiences. Several themes were identified and examined across student experience according to three main phases: how and why students dropped out of school, how they came to re-enter education, and what kept them there. The overall story emerging from the data and analyses began with students experiencing a tremendous amount of tumult and lack of support in both their home and school lives, which eventually led to their early departure. After dropping out, they experienced internal change and maturation wherein getting their GED became tremendously important to them. It is during this time that students were able to take advantage of the positive individuals in their lives and/or seek out more positive individuals who provided them with support and motivation. Once they decided to go back to school they made multiple re-entry attempts but were dissatisfied with the quality of alternative educational programs until they found the GEL program, at which point they experienced an ethos of caring and support from their teachers and fellow students. Theoretical contributions regarding the role of social capital in re-entry and practice and policy implications are also discussed.

Exploration of characteristics of participants that do/do not persist and obtain their GED assists the high school dropout, potential GED recipient, GED program staff, and society as a whole. More information was needed in order to effectively address issues that adversely affect students enrolled in GED programs at a rural community college. Therefore, examination of the GED program's student database contributed in finding factors that both help and impede student success. Factors identified were investigated in an effort to assist in the retention of future participants in the GED program. The subjects of this study consisted of 976 students enrolled in GED programs at a rural community college. The data utilized were archived and provided by the GED staff via charts and spreadsheets of student files and records (i.e. demographic sheet, entry tests-locator test or TABE test, pre-GED testing, exit tests-GED, etc.). There was no direct contact with subjects. A discriminant function analysis was utilized in this study. This was done by weighting the variables and combining them into discriminant functions that separate the groups maximally. The discriminating variables were considered as predictor variables and the group membership variables were considered as dummy criterion variables. Also, a quantitative, non-experimental design was employed to show the direction and magnitude of the relationships between independent variables. The essential features of the design were the abilities to find associations, relate variables, and make predictions. The variables of age, race, gender, employment, public assistance, rural, single parent, and entry/exit levels significantly discriminated into the following groups at a 59.5% rate of accuracy: (1) GED completion, (2) GED continuation, and (3) GED dropouts. Age, race, gender, entry level, and rural had a significant impact on persistence/GED completion. Older, male, and higher entry level (4, 5, and 6) participants were more apt to persist and complete the GED program. While white and black participants completed at higher rates than Asian and Hispanic participants. The majority of rural participants also completed the GED program.
