Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incidence of fracture of Cavi-Endo ultrasonic K-files during ultrasonic root canal preparation was evaluated. In addition, the appearance and the sites of fractures were examined in relation to the modal points on the file. The displacement amplitudes and the hardness of the files were quantified to determine their relationship to fracture. It was observed that the files exhibited a low incidence of fracture, which was one of the brittle type and occurred at the apical ends. The displacement amplitude and the hardness of the files did not appear to influence the incidence of fracture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This superbly illustrated book provides detailed information on the causes of instrument failure during endodontic treatment, the factors influencing the management of such cases, and the diverse management options that may be employed to resolve the problem. Readers will find clear descriptions and comparative evaluation of the available methods, techniques, and devices. Complications that may arise during the management of fractured instruments are described, and the impact of retained file fragments on the prognosis of endodontic treatment is discussed. In addition, means of preventing iatrogenic errors from occurring in the first place (the best form of management) are explained, emphasizing that the risk of instrument failure is reduced if proper guidelines are carefully considered and followed. The book will assist both endodontists and general dental practitioners in achieving an optimal outcome when confronted with the time-consuming and challenging task of dealing with a fractured instrument within the root canal – a still frequent circumstance despite the plethora of improvements in instrument design, alloy composition, and manufacturing processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incidence of breakage of Piezon-Master ultrasonic K files were evaluated. Three groups of unused files were subjected to three treatments, namely, free vibration in air without irrigation, free vibration in root canal while minimizing contact with the wall of canal in the presence of irrigation and light filing in root canal with free flow of irrigation. Cavitation produced by files in contact and free of contact with glass surface was examined in order to observe the relationship between cavitation defects and breakage. Fractured and unfractured files were also examined under a scanning electron microscope for the presence of cavitation pits. The results indicated that more files broke in air. All files generated cavitation and the pitting of their surfaces. However, the pits could not have contributed to the fractures. Fatigue cracks, the result of manufacturing process, could be the main cause of fracture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the feasibility of using K-Flex files with the Cavi-Endo ultrasonic unit. The effectiveness of the K_Flex files in shaping canals was compared with the ultrasonic Cavi-Endo K-files. Simulated curved canals in clear resin blocks were instrumented using the 2 file types. Pre- and postinstrumentation photographs were taken and the foloowing were evaluated: apical and coronal areas, the incidence of the narrowing of the canals coronal to the apical transport (elbows) and displacement amplitudes of the files. The results indicated that the K-Flex files were more efficient than the ultrasonic K-files and resulted in less elbow formation. No direct realtionship was observed between displacement amplitudes and the incidence of elbow formation. It is suggested that the manufacturers of ultrasonic units consider the different file designs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the current state of research on the basic scientific aspects of root canal biofilm biology within a clinically applicable context. Root canal biofilms are complex polymicrobial structures adhering to the root canal surface that are formed by microorganisms invading the pulpal space of teeth, and are associated with persistent root canal infections. Concerted efforts to study root canal biofilms have been made in the past decade, resulting in the publication of observational and experimental studies that detail the morphology and biology of these structures in infected root canals. In addition to confirming that bacteria in root canals do not exist in free-floating planktonic states as previously assumed, this new information on root canal biofilm infections has provided an opportunity to re-evaluate conventional clinical protocols and improve endodontic therapeutic measures.
