Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare, From an American Point of View The following Essays were originally addressed to a public consisting for the most part of American readers: and it was the intention of the author to publish them first, in a collected form, in the United States, It, however, having become apparent, in the course of his researches, that it would be advisable to consult the British libraries, he concluded to issue the work in London. This was the more desirable, because a judgment rendered from the fountain head of English criticism, on what may be deemed a conspicuously English subject, would be more authoritative and satisfactory than if given from any other source. The author, therefore, takes this opportunity to say that the most rigorous criticism will not be unwelcome; not, indeed, from any vain confidence in his own views, but because they are put forward in good faith, and in order to elicit truth concerning a genius who is the richest inheritance of the intellectual world. Should, indeed, his views be controverted, the author must even in that event be a gainer in common with the other admirers of Shakespeare; for it can never be a true source of mortification to relinquish opinions in favour of those which are shown to be better. Presenting these pages, therefore, rather as a series of inquiries than as dogmatic doctrine, the author strives to support them by only such an amount of controversy as is legitimately due from one who invites the public to a new discussion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life of William Shakespeare The materials for a life of Shakespeare have been gradu-a ally assembled by the industry of hundreds Of scholars, extending through more than two centuries; and prob ably little new matter Of importance remains to be dis covered, except through a happy, and at present quite unforeseen, accident. The arduous labors of Professor and Mrs. Wallace in the manuscript archives of England, during the course Of which they examined over a million documents, recently yielded some fresh information; yet the small number Of their finds assures us that nearly all that we are likely to know Of the personal affairs of the great dramatist has already been made pub lic. This stagnation in discovery is perhaps responsible for the tendency, especially marked in the last decade, for writers to deal in fanciful speculation, evolving from Slight evidence, or none worthy of the name, bizarre and Often elaborately detailed hypotheses regarding Shake speare's relations with his contemporaries. But the re sults Of such ingenuity are likely to be as perilous as they are unsubstantial, and for the most part must be ignored by the biographer. On the other hand, some valuable information is now being derived from a study, largely bibliographical, Of the origin of the Shakespearean texts, and of their transmission to us through the medium of the playhouse and the press. True, much remains to be done in this field Of endeavor before absolutely final conclusions are established, yet the main facts which alone are needed for a general biography are already clear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliography of the Bacon-Shakespeare Controversy: With Notes and Extracts While the endeavor has been to embody in some part of it, in a general way, all the main points of the discussion, this work does not pretend to be a complete reflex of all the arguments or the evidence adduced. It is simply a list of the titles, to which are added such brief memoranda as will give the main facts in regard to this literature, and something as to its authors. By the notes and extracts, an effort has been made to relieve the tediousness of a dry Bibliography. Where extracts are given, such have usually been chosen as were thought to embody some interesting feature, or a hint of the argument - these to be distributed so evenly as to leave no doubts of a bibliographical impartiality. In short, the aim has been to point out to those who desire this information just where it may be found. In common with one of the writers, who has adopted an expression of Lord Bacon's: We have only taken upon us to ring a bell, to call other wits together, which is the meanest office. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare for Community Players In many regards the greatest sufferer under the old system has been English literature, the branch which it would seem desirable to teach most thoroughly. After due allowance has been made for the saving grace of the personality of the teacher, the English class of the secondary school must linger in the minds of most men and women to-day as a very dull affair. There is something awful about forty boys and girls staring at When I consider how my light is spent, as if it were some thing to be looked at, like a wax flower under a bell jar. We talked about it, ticked off the iambs with our pencils, put in two neat vertical lines for the caesuras, but it never occurred to any body present to vocalise the poem and allow it to speak for itself. It would not have made any real difference to us anyway, because nobody had ever taken the trouble to teach us to read poetry. Years afterward I found out by the merest chance that it is one of the finest poems in the language, when it is read aloud. The irony of the situation is rather increased than other wise by the historical fact that Milton himself never saw the poem either in manuscript or print, but was forced to use the unaided human voice to mark the iambs and caesuras. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shakespeare Society's Papers, Vol. 2 In issuing the second volume of The Shakespeare Society's Papers, the Council has much satisfaction in referring to the number and variety of the contributions, to the importance Of most of them (as illustrative Of the Works of our great dramatist and early stage-litera ture), and to the manner in which all tend to carry out the general objects of the Society. They show also the Wide interest taken in inquiries of the kind, extending even to some of our remoter colonies. Another gratifying point, more fully established by the present volume, is the active and persevering spirit of research generated by the continued labours of the Society. Individuals who have Old books or documents in their hands have thus been induced to explore their dusty depositories; and the result has been, among other things, the discovery of several highly curious and valuable tracts by dramatic contemporaries of Shake speare, which have hitherto remained in utter conceal ment. Two of these, a Pageant by Thomas Middleton, and a poem by Robert Greene (the only entire work in verse he perhaps ever wrote) are included in the eu suing pages, as too brief to form separate publications. They have never been heard of before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hundreds of biblical references in Shakespeare's plays give ample evidence that he was well acquainted with Scripture. Not only is the range of his biblical references impressive, but also the aptness with which he makes them. Hamlet and Othello each have more than fifty biblical references. No study of Shakespeare's plays is complete that ignores Shakespeare's use of scripture. The Bibles that Shakespeare knew, however, were not those that are in use today. By the time the King James Bible appeared in 1611, Shakespeare's career was all but over, and the Anglican liturgy that is evident in his plays is likewise one that few persons are acquainted with. This volume provides a comprehensive survey of the English Bibles of Shakespeare's day, notes their similarities and differences, and indicates which version the playwright knew best. The thorny question of what constitutes a valid biblical reference is also discussed. The study of Shakespeare's biblical references is not based on secondary sources. The author owned one of the world's largest collections of early English bibles, including over one hundred copies of the Geneva bible and numerous editions of other Bibles, prayer books, and books of homilies of Shakespeare's day. To be of real worth, a study of Shakespeare's biblical references should also enable the reader to determine which references Shakespeare borrowed from his plot sources and which he added from his own memory as part of his design for the play. The author studies every source that Shakespeare is known to have read or consulted before writing each play and has examined the biblical references in those sources. Shaheen then points out which biblical references in his literary sources Shakespeare accepted, and how he adapted them in his plays. This information is especially valuable when assessing the theological meanings that are sometimes imposed on his plays, meanings that often go beyond what Shakespeare intended or what his audience must have understood. Biblical References in Shakespeare's Plays is considerably broader in scope than any other study of its kind and provides the scholarly checks and balances in dealing with the subject that previous studies lacked. .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the d104 of Shakespeare: With Numerous Emendations, and Appendices The expression on our title page d104 of Shakespeare is at best a vague and often a very misleading one. Who can say truly where or what it is? Though the material now-a-days for such a purpose is more acces sible than ever. The time may come when the English speaking populations of the world will have in their hands such a text as will satisfy every reasonable de mand, admitting only as curiosities some of the most glaring errors which the original copies present, and leaving to the intelligent reader the choice of pondering over these if he has a mind, or passing them by undisturbed. One expression in the Preface to the first volume of the Cambridge Shakespeare came home to me with a start, for which I was hardly prepared, when I read of the intention of the editors in their work to give the reader in a compact form a complete view of the existing materials out of which the text has been constructed, or may be emended And truly their labour has not been misapplied. Other alterations in the generally accepted text, that I have pointed out as possible, but not ventured to introduce into the text of this edition, will be found suggested in the notes on 1. Iii. 65, II. I. 83, ii. 46, iv. 18, III. I. 39, ii. I 18, and IV. Iii. 240. The only passage, as far as I know, to which, without departing from the usual reading, I have given an entirely new interpretation is III. I. I74, I 75. Few notes on the scansion of par ticular lines will be found in the following pages. Shakespeare's metre is a large subject, which requires general treatment with reference to all the plays. The commentary on any individual play would be over burdened, if an attempt were made to examine all the metrical irregularities that occur in it. The notes in this edition are mostly explanatory, and even with this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
