Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work, originally published as one volume in the Peter Lang series, Issues in Systematic Theology, is now available in two volumes. In the first volume, Gary Deddo shows how Barth grasped the nature of relations as intrinsic to the being and act of the Triune God and to God's relations to us and our relationship to God in Christ. Deddo then completes his comprehensive survey showing how Barth saw the reality of the divine relationships analogically pertains, by grace, to humanity and its creaturely relationships. Barth's doctrine of God, Christology, and theological anthropology are all intrinsically onto-relational (to borrow a term coined by Thomas F. Torrance). In the second volume, Deddo shows how Barth's relational theology is intrinsically ethical. As a case study Deddo explicates Barth's ethical teaching on the relationship between parents and children found in section 54 of his chapter on Freedom in Fellowship in CD, III/4. He further demonstrates the relevance and fruitfulness of Barth's theology of relations for critically engaging other theological and non-theological views of the family and for shedding ethical light on a wide range of contemporary issues facing families, especially in the North American context. Karl Barth is known for his insight into the inseparability of act and being in God. What is less recognized is that Barth's theological understanding of dynamic, covenantal relationship is also essential to his doctrine of the Triune God, his Christology and theological anthropology. God is revealed in Jesus Christ to be one in act, being and relation. Humanity is revealed in Jesus Christ to be essentially a unity of act, being and relation. The failure to see the ethical implications of Barth's theology can be traced in large part to the failure to gasp how Barth's understanding of God's being and act is also essentially relational. Deddo's work corrects this oversight and opens up the door to better comprehension of Barth's trinitarian doctrine of God, his Christology, anthropology and ethics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few figures in church history that died before the age of thirty have left such a lasting legacy as Robert Murray M’Cheyne (1813–43). His name is virtually synonymous with the pursuit of personal holiness. M’Cheyne was a living testimony to Scripture’s command to “let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity” (1 Tim 4:12). His ardent praying, preaching, and progress in godliness continue to captivate countless Christians around the world. The model of piety found in M’Cheyne’s life and ministry provides needed encouragement for properly understanding biblical spirituality. What was the main fuel of his spirituality? Love for Jesus Christ. In A Communion of Love, Jordan Stone argues that rightly understanding M’Cheyne’s spirituality must begin with the fundamental issue of why he pursued the means of grace as he did, before reckoning with how he used those means. Such a reorientation reveals that loving communion with Christ was the all-consuming, driving force for M’Cheyne’s vision of the Christian life.

Book excerpt: "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28 NLT) When we think about what Jesus's words promise and who is actually saying them, they become some of the most welcoming words ever spoken. In a world that is unraveling with anxiety and stress, no one less than Jesus offers us His peace. Yet it's hard to feel peaceful while waiting for a biopsy result, grieving a lost relationship, or walking through unemployment. How do we receive and enjoy the peace God offers during hard times? The answer is prayer that is an everyday, heart-to-heart relationship with the Creator. With scriptural insights and inviting storytelling, James Banks shows how daily friendship with God brings us peace as we experience anxieties, suffer past hurts, and face chronic difficulties. The peace Jesus offers us is more than just words. It's healing for our hurts and calm for our troubled hearts. It's love and acceptance when others misunderstand us and push us away. It's the freedom of a new identity in Him, defined not by how good we are but by how good He is. Through prayer God transforms the way His followers see themselves and others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-nineteenth century, Dundee was gradually establishing itself as Scotland’s third-largest city, with a rapidly expanding economy. What most attracted observers’ attention, however, was the religious revival that began in the Fall of 1839 under the leadership of two relatively young and inexperienced ministers, Robert Murray McCheyne (1813–1843) and William Chalmers Burns (1815–1868). In McCheyne’s Dundee, historian Bruce McLennan ably traces the story of revival in this industrial Scottish seaport. After looking at the social and economic conditions of the city, as well as the significant religious issues of the day, he then considers McCheyne and Burns—their backgrounds, their brief ministries in Dundee, and their impact as God’s instruments of great spiritual blessing to the people of that city. McLennan concludes with an analysis of the reactions to the revival—both approbation and opposition— and the awakening’s long-term effects, which could still be seen a generation later. Table of Contents: 1. Dundee in the 1830s and 1840s 2. Two Background Religious Issues of the Times 3. Breaking Up the Fallow Ground: McCheyne’s Early Years in Dundee, Preparing for Revival 4. “That Memorable Field”: Burns’s Seven Months in Dundee 5. McCheyne’s Last Years in Dundee: Continuing Evidence of Revival 6. McCheyne and the Lambs 7. Responses to the Revival: Opposition and Approbation 8. Aftermath

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces and translates Sedulius Scottus' Prologue (to the entire Collectaneum in Apostolum) and commentaries on Galatians and Ephesians. The introduction outlines the historical context of composition, identifies Sedulius' literary model - Servius, discusses Sedulius' organizing trope for the Prologue - the septem circumstantiae, asserts for what purpose and for whom he composed the Collectaneum, explains pertinent philological and stylistic issues, such as formatting, existing (or lack thereof) traits of Hiberno Latin, and Sedulius' knowledge of Greek, and it explores his use of exegetical and theological sources - predominantly Jerome, Augustine, and Pelagius. Since the commentaries are based upon these formative religious authors (among many others), the introduction also surveys Sedulius' doctrinal stances on important theological and ecclesiastical issues of his own time with particular relation to his reception of these authors. Sedulius' Collectaneum in Apostolum reveals an erudite author familiar with the style of classical commentaries, which he uses to harmonize the sometimes discordant voices of patristic authors for the purposes of education in accordance with Carolingian programmatic aims.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The God Who Goes before You, Michael S. Wilder and Timothy Paul Jones establish a foundation for Christian leadership that draws not from human assumptions, but from the wisdom of God. By considering the whole canon of scripture as their supreme and sufficient authority, Wilder and Jones present both pastors and laity with a Christ-centered, kingdom-focused vision of godly leadership. When it comes to leadership, there is much to be learned from empirical research and from marketplace leaders. However, without Scripture as our authority, flawed views of God's purposes and human nature will skew our understanding of the character and practices of God-called leaders. In this book, Wilder and Jones redefine leadership as Christ-centered followership and present a radically countercultural perspective on leadership practices in the church today.
