Book excerpt: A Supply and Use Table (SUT) serve to increase the quality of GDP and related aggregates by providing a framework to detect and resolve inconsistencies in data sources. SUTs are also a powerful analytical tool that permit users to access information on detailed production functions, consumption, export, and import baskets, or to derive input-output tables. SUT compilation is data intensive and requires a balancing process. The balancing procedure is labor intensive and generally requires several long and sometimes tedious iterations, which has an adverse effect on timeliness. This note describes a basic algorithm developed by the IMF to balance supply and use tables automatically, allowing a much faster SUT balancing process. For training purposes, this algorithm has been implemented as an Excel tool SUTB, making it operational almost globally. The optimization process is illustrated with an example.

Book excerpt: A technical assistance mission assisted the Statistics Agency under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan (SA) in developing the annual supply and use tables and improving the non-observed economy estimates. The mission recommended improving data sources by implementing sector-specific surveys to better estimate the level of non-observed economy. The mission also assisted the SA with compilation of financial intermediation services indirectly measured (FISIM) in accordance with the 2008 System of National Accounts (2008 SNA). the SA published new estimates of FISIM on the website. These improvements to data and methods will improve the understanding of the Uzbekistan economy, both for domestic policymaking and international surveillance.

Book excerpt: This volume provides a valuable introduction to hybrid I-O analysis and therefore should be useful to the growing number of researchers working with these techniques. Timothy J. Considine, Journal of Industrial Ecology This is a first-rate piece of work. . . Dr Hoekstra s book is the most comprehensive assessment of economic decomposition analysis to date. The author has clarified some confusions, filled in some important gaps in the literature and extended the methods both conceptually and empirically. He has done a most thorough job of constructing hybrid input output tables and applied them to the important issue of trends in material production use. His use of SDA for forecasting and backcasting of trends and policy making is also very impressive. Adam Rose, Pennsylvania State University, US Rutger Hoekstra examines the complex relationship between the monetary economy and the materials flows that are extracted and emitted by economic activities. These physical flows are responsible for many important environmental problems such as unsustainable resource depletion, waste production and climate change. This book discusses, applies and improves upon techniques which link the monetary and physical economies for environmental analyses. The book uses two sources of analysis: the physical input-output table (PIOT), a macro-economic account for the physical economy, recording material and product flows, including resource extraction, emissions and recycling; and structural decomposition analysis (SDA), which assesses the influence of structural changes, such as economic growth, consumption shifts, export growth and technological change, on environmental indicators. Methodological improvements in the PIOT and SDA systems are then presented by the author, and applied to empirical data. Ecological and industrial economists, along with those with an interest in environmental problems associated with the economy will find this book, with its extensive historical analysis and novel fore- and back-casting models, to be a fascinating read.

Fuzzy logic is intrinsic to applications in the electrical, chemical and engineering industries, and also in the fields of management and environmental issues. Data mining is indispensible in dealing with big data, massive data, and scalable, parallel and distributed algorithms. This book presents the proceedings of FSDM 2023, the 9th International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining, held from 10-13 November 2023 as a hybrid event, with some participants attending in Chongqing, China, and others online. The conference focuses on four main areas: fuzzy theory, algorithms and systems; fuzzy application; data mining; and the interdisciplinary field of fuzzy logic and data mining, and provides a forum for experts, researchers, academics and representatives from industry to share the latest advances in the field of fuzzy sets and data mining. This year, topics from two special sessions on granular-ball computing and the application of generative AI, as well as machine learning and neural networks, were also covered. A total of 363 submissions were received, and after careful review by the members of the international program committee, 110 papers were accepted for presentation at the conference and publication here, representing an acceptance rate of just over 30%. Covering a comprehensive range of current research and developments in fuzzy logic and data mining, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field of data science.

Book excerpt: Supply chains are currently globalized and companies operate internationally owing to the fact that raw materials, production processes, and the consumption of the final products are carried out in different countries. This implies high material and information flow, which incurs high costs associated with the supply chain and logistics, sometimes up to 60% of the total cost of the product. Therefore, companies seek to optimize their resources to reduce these costs and improve sustainability in a globalized market. This book, entitled Tools, Methodologies and Techniques Applied to Sustainable Supply Chains, contains 15 chapters that report case studies applied to industrial and service sectors. The authors come from areas such as Mexico, Colombia, Italy, Sweden, Slovakia, China, and Australia. They indicate how managers make use of tools and techniques to solve problems associated with supply chains to reduce their cost and remain competitive. A great effort has been made to analyze this problem, and the methodologies are clearly described here to facilitate the reproducibility of each technique and tool. This was done in the hope that hoping that they may one day be applied in more companies.
