Book excerpt: This report describes the formulation of a model of the dynamic behavior of the Benchmark Active Controls Technology (BACT) wind tunnel for active control design and analysis applications. The model is formed by combining the equations of motion for the BACT wind tunnel model with actuator models and a model of wind tunnel turbulence. The primary focus of this report is the development of the equations of motion from first principles by using Lagrange's equations and the principle of virtual work. A numerical form of the model is generated by making use of parameters obtained from both experiment and analysis. Comparisons between experimental and analytical data obtained from the numerical model show excellent agreement and suggest that simple coefficient-based aerodynamics are sufficient to accurately characterize the aeroelastic response of the BACT wind tunnel model. The equations of motion developed herein have been used to aid in the design and analysis of a number of flutter suppresion controllers that have been successfully implemented.

Book excerpt: An experimental evaluation of analytical techniques for predicting certain stability and control characteristics of a large flexible aircraft is presented. Analytical methods based on both the model approach and flexibility influence coefficients are developed to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of a flexible airplane. These methods are then applied to a flexibly scaled model of a supersonic transport configuration. Comparisons of wind-tunnel data, calculations based on the model approach, and flexibility influence coefficients are presented over the Mach number range from 0.6 to 2.7. An examination of the results obtained from this study indicates that both analytical techniques predict reasonably well the effect of flexibility on the basic longitudinal characteristics and that both techniques give generally comparable results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general objective was to collect and analyze aerodynamic stability and control data for the XV-4B, XV-5A, and P-1127 VTOL configurations. Correlation and analysis of existing model data were made to investigate hover and transition characteristics. Particular emphasis was placed on the aerodynamic power effects, sometimes referred to as interference effects. Other areas of investigation were sometimes referred to as interference effects. Other areas of investigation were nondimensional coefficients used to present VTOL data and wind tunnel test techniques. Wind tunnel tests were conducted using an inlet only model and a jet only model to investigate special test and analysis problems for these components. The agreement between different sets of XV-4B model data was, in general, found to be poor. However, the nondimensional coefficients used by Lockheed to reduce to XV-4B model data appear to be valid parameters for this category of VTOL airplane. The jet entrainment flow was shown by experiment to be the primary cause of the XV-4B power effects, and the XV-4B jet path was experimentally and theoretically determined.

Book excerpt: The book "Wind Tunnels and Experimental Fluid Dynamics Research" is comprised of 33 chapters divided in five sections. The first 12 chapters discuss wind tunnel facilities and experiments in incompressible flow, while the next seven chapters deal with building dynamics, flow control and fluid mechanics. Third section of the book is dedicated to chapters discussing aerodynamic field measurements and real full scale analysis (chapters 20-22). Chapters in the last two sections deal with turbulent structure analysis (chapters 23-25) and wind tunnels in compressible flow (chapters 26-33). Contributions from a large number of international experts make this publication a highly valuable resource in wind tunnels and fluid dynamics field of research.

Book excerpt: The aerodynamic characteristics of a full scale executive type jet transport aircraft with a T-tail were investigated in a 40 x 80 ft (12.2 by 24.4 meter) wind tunnel (subsonic). Static, longitudinal, and lateral stability, and control characteristics were determined at angles of attack from -2 deg to 42 deg. The aircraft wing had 13 deg of sweep and an aspect ratio of 5.02. The aircraft was tested power off with various wing leading- and trailing-edge high lift devices. The basic configuration was tested with and without such components as engine nacelles, wing tip tanks, and empannage. Hinge-moment data were obtained and downwash angles in the horizontal-tail plane location were calculated. The data were obtained at Reynolds numbers of 4.1 million and 8.7 million based on mean aerodynamic chord. The model had static longitudinal stability through initial stall. Severe tail buffet occurred near the angle of attack for maximum lift. Above initial stall the aircraft had pronounced pitch-up, characteristic of T-tail configurations. A stable trim point was possible at angles of attack between 30 deg and 40 deg (depending on c.g. location and flap setting). Hinge-moment data showed no regions with adverse effects on stick force. Comparisons of wind-tunnel data and flight-test are presented.

Book excerpt: Aeroelastic phenomena arising from the interaction of aerodynamic, elastic and inertia forces, and the loads resulting from flight / ground manoeuvres and gust / turbulence encounters, have a significant influence upon aircraft design. The prediction of aircraft aeroelastic stability, response and loads requires application of a range of interrelated engineering disciplines. This new textbook introduces the foundations of aeroelasticity and loads for the flexible aircraft, providing an understanding of the main concepts involved and relating them to aircraft behaviour and industrial practice. This book includes the use of simplified mathematical models to demonstrate key aeroelastic and loads phenomena including flutter, divergence, control effectiveness and the response and loads resulting from flight / ground manoeuvres and gust / turbulence encounters. It provides an introduction to some up-to-date methodologies for aeroelastics and loads modelling. It lays emphasis on the strong link between aeroelasticity and loads. It also includes provision of MATLAB and SIMULINK programs for the simplified analyses. It offers an overview of typical industrial practice in meeting certification requirements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Is Active Aeroelastic Wing The X-53 Active Aeroelastic Wing (AAW) development program is an American research project that has been completed. This project was carried out jointly by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Boeing Phantom Works, and NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center. At NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, the technology was flight tested on a modified McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet. Active Aeroelastic Wing Technology is a technology that blends the aerodynamics, controls, and structure of a wing in order to harness and regulate the aeroelastic twist that a wing experiences under dynamic stresses and high speeds. The use of multiple leading and trailing edge controls, such as "aerodynamic tabs," enables subtle amounts of aeroelastic twist to be controlled to provide large amounts of wing control power, while simultaneously minimizing maneuver air loads under high wing strain conditions or aerodynamic drag under low wing strain conditions. This is accomplished while maintaining a balance between the two extremes of wing strain conditions. This operation served as the very first demonstration of AAW technology on a large scale.
