Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark in New Zealand literary scholarship, this book provides an extraordinary insight into the formative years of one of New Zealand's most significant poets. Included are 56 letters written by James K. Baxter to his slightly older friend, Noel Ginn, who was at the time imprisoned as a conscientious objector. In these letters, a teenage Baxter pours out his ideas and feelings on life, philosophy, and his own work. Included are the complete texts of the 255 poems written at the time and discussed in the letters. The introduction, an important work of biographical criticism in its own right, puts Baxter's ideas and interests within the context of the wider public events and intellectual and spiritual currents of his time.

Book excerpt: FACES OF CHRISTMAS PAST is an engaging, middle-aged look at the perils of Christmas, our own self-imposed burdens of ritual duty (like the newsy Christmas Xerox), and the more unsettling fact that successive Christmases, more even than New Year's, mark the passing of our life from childhood to death. "Old Christmas card photos show us how we've aged," says author Bill Holm, "reminding us that, though time may curve in Einstein's physics, in our small life it is a straight line to white hair and bifocals."

With contributing authors such as Lynn Z. Bloom, Margaretta Jolly, Robert Lawson-Peebles, and Robert Shenk, the critical essays extend from Xenophon's memoir of his two years marching with the mercenaries of the Persian Prince Cyrus, through Canadian accounts of the Boer War and American civilian women's narratives of confinement in WWII Japanese internment camps, to Vietnam veterans' online testimonials and post-Persian Gulf War memoirs written as management primers."--Pub. desc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring rumpled PIs, shyster lawyers, corrupt politicians, double-crossers, femmes fatales, and, of course, losers who find themselves down on their luck yet again, film noir is a perennially popular cinematic genre. This extensive encyclopedia describes movies from noir's earliest days – and even before, looking at some of noir's ancestors in US and European cinema – as well as noir's more recent offshoots, from neonoirs to erotic thrillers. Entries are arranged alphabetically, covering movies from all over the world – from every continent save Antarctica – with briefer details provided for several hundred additional movies within those entries. A copious appendix contains filmographies of prominent directors, actors, and writers. With coverage of blockbusters and program fillers from Going Straight (US 1916) to Broken City (US 2013) via Nora Inu (Japan 1949), O Anthropos tou Trainou (Greece 1958), El Less Wal Kilab (Egypt 1962), Reportaje a la Muerte (Peru 1993), Zift (Bulgaria 2008), and thousands more, A Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Film Noir is an engrossing and essential reference work that should be on the shelves of every cinephile.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By September 1944, Allied forces had broken out from the Normandy beachheads, liberated Paris, and found themselves poised on the German border. As this offensive gained momentum, Patton and Montgomery, hoping to exploit the enemy's temporary weakness in the West, concocted their own alternatives to Eisenhower's broad front strategy. Each proposed a single thrust aimed directly into the German heartland, designed to bring the troops home by Christmas. This study examines this so-called broad front-single thrust controversy and concludes that the idea of early victory was wishful thinking--a product of the erroneous and dangerous assumption that the Nazi regime was already tottering on the brink of collapse. Precisely because of its lightning pace, the Allied advance resulted in severe logistical problems, limiting Patton's proposed operation to only ten combat divisions, while Montgomery's closer proximity to the coast might have allowed for as many as sixteen. But it should have been obvious that either thrust faced certain destruction against the 250 divisions still fielded by the Wehrmacht on all fronts in September. In light of this substantial German military capacity, despite serious losses and strategic setbacks, the single thrust could not have been a decisive war-ending maneuver. In fact, Andidora argues, it could not even have provided for its own security against the forces that would have coalesced against it. Rather than unnecessarily prolonging the war, as some have argued, Eisenhower's decision to stay the strategic course probably averted a military disaster.

Book excerpt: No man aspires to do the things we did. We were ordinary men made to cope with extraordinary situations. In order for genocide to happen, it can only come about when political and social agendas are aligned. I have killed with ruthless disregard for humanity. I ordered young German soldiers to kill with the same ruthless disregard for humanity. I am a criminal. I have chosen to tell my story for many reasons but above all, in the hope that my words will explain how such heinous madness can be taken from an idea to a reality and how we all have the ability to slip from our comfortable lives and spiral into an abyss to which we are irrevocably committed. The ability to kill is encoded in the genetics of every human being and the wisdom and ability to control it are fragile guardians.
