Book Synopsis A Presbyterian Bibliography by : Harold B. Prince
Download or read book A Presbyterian Bibliography written by Harold B. Prince and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Librarians, historians, researchers, students, and others interested in examining the literary production of Southern Presbyterian ministers and works written about them will find A Presbyterian Bibliography invaluable. A 4,187-entry listing of extant published writings of ministers ordained by or received into the Presbyterian Church in the United States in its first hundred years, 1861-1961, this bibliography lists works by and about PCUS ministers and gives locations of all editions found in eight significant theological collections in the U.S.A. Presbyterian seminary libraries are those of Austin, Columbia, Louisville, Princeton, Reformed, and Union (Virginia); included also are the libraries of the Historical Foundation of the Presbyterian and Reformed Churches and the Presbyterian Historical Society. An examination of this listing of published (i.e., printed) books, parts of books, pamphlets, and periodical article repreints shows that PCUS ministers became authors, editors, translators, poets, dramatists, composers, and essayists who wrote sermons, polemics, commentaries, Bible studies, theologies, histories, and letters to Presidents. Content notes and annotations for many books indicate individual minister contributions. A subject index, and indexes leading to every listing of a minister's name and to the main entries of the other presons gives access to the Bibliography.

Book excerpt: Professor Holifield locates the southern theologians in their broader American setting and in the context of European debates about reason, revelation, science, and moral philosophy. He thus explores a wide range of topics that clarify the history of southern--and American--religion: the presuppositions of liberalism and the logic of conservatism; the influence of Scottish Common-Sense Philosophers, British theologians, and German Biblical critics; the foundations and functions of southern social ethics; the didactic uses of ritual; and the continuing effort of nineteenth-century theologians to demonstrate the reasonableness of both the Christian religion and the whole natural order.
Book Synopsis The Sources of Anti-Slavery Constitutionalism in America, 1760-1848 by : William M. Wiecek
Download or read book The Sources of Anti-Slavery Constitutionalism in America, 1760-1848 written by William M. Wiecek and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious book examines the constitutional and legal doctrines of the antislavery movement from the eve of the American Revolution to the Wilmot Proviso and the 1848 national elections. Relating political activity to constitutional thought, William M. Wiecek surveys the antislavery societies, the ideas of their individual members, and the actions of those opposed to slavery and its expansion into the territories. He shows that the idea of constitutionalism has popular origins and was not the exclusive creation of a caste of lawyers. In offering a sophisticated examination of both sides of the argument about slavery, he not only discusses court cases and statutes, but also considers a broad range of "extrajudicial" thought—political speeches and pamphlets, legislative debates and arguments.

Book Synopsis Partisans of the Southern Press by : Carl R. Osthaus
Download or read book Partisans of the Southern Press written by Carl R. Osthaus and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl R. Osthaus examines the southern contribution to American Press history, from Thomas Ritchie's mastery of sectional politics and the New Orleans Picayune's popular voice and use of local color, to the emergence of progressive New South editors Henry Watterson, Francis Dawson, and Henry Grady, who imitated, as far as possible, the New Journalism of the 1880s. Unlike black and reform editors who spoke for minorities and the poor, the South's mainstream editors of the nineteenth century advanced the interests of the elite and helped create the myth of southern unity. The southern press diverged from national standards in the years of sectionalism, Civil War, and Reconstruction. Addicted to editorial diatribes rather than to news gathering, these southern editors of the middle period were violent, partisan, and vindictive. They exemplified and defended freedom of the press, but the South's press was free only because southern society was closed. This work broadens our understanding of journalism of the South, while making a valuable contribution to southern history.

Book Synopsis Apocalypse and the Millennium in the American Civil War Era by : Ben Wright
Download or read book Apocalypse and the Millennium in the American Civil War Era written by Ben Wright and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2013-11-04 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Civil War era, Americans nearly unanimously accepted that humans battled in a cosmic contest between good and evil and that God was directing history toward its end. The concept of God's Providence and of millennialism -- Christian anticipations of the end of the world -- dominated religious thought in the nineteenth century. During the tumultuous years immediately prior to, during, and after the war, these ideas took on a greater importance as Americans struggled with the unprecedented destruction and promise of the period. Scholars of religion, literary critics, and especially historians have acknowledged the presence of apocalyptic thought in the era, but until now, few studies have taken the topic as their central focus or examined it from the antebellum period through Reconstruction. By doing so, the essays in Apocalypse and the Millennium in the American Civil War Era highlight the diverse ways in which beliefs about the end times influenced nineteenth-century American lives, including reform culture, the search for meaning amid the trials of war, and the social transformation wrought by emancipation. Millennial zeal infused the labor of reformers and explained their successes and failures as progress toward an imminent Kingdom of God. Men and women in the North and South looked to Providence to explain the causes and consequences of both victory and defeat, and Americans, black and white, experienced the shock waves of emancipation as either a long-prophesied jubilee or a vengeful punishment. Religion fostered division as well as union, the essays suggest, but while the nation tore itself apart and tentatively stitched itself back together, Americans continued looking to divine intervention to make meaning of the national apocalypse.
