Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Before the Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina: Delivered in Gerard Hall, June 2, 1847, the Evening Preceding Commencement The Press began its work in 1639 a century afterwards it had earned the prohibitibn of England, and was strong enough to defy ii and at this day, it asserts its freedom by an influence which is only not despotic because it is not harmonious. 'far outstripping by its enterprise the fertility of our own writers, the American press appropriates unshrinkingly the literary treasures of the whole earth while it almost' forbids Importation of books by the cheap ness with which it reprints them, and the facility with which it scatters them among all classes of the reading community.' But the most striking displays of its activity and power are only to be witnessed in the field of Journalism, where it more than equals France in knows no other rival throughout the world. It printed the first newspaper in America in the year 1704; in 1828 it had joined an additional number of eight hundred and fifty and, at this day, it acts upon the popular mind through the teeming columns of more than two thousand journals. Sharing, as well as stimulating, the progressive spirit of the age, it advances into the wilderness with our hardy pioneers keeps company with our commerce among the islands of the sea; and contends for supremacy with the sword upon every battle-field which is won by our victorious arms. Already it sends us shipping lists from the Sandwich Islands, chronicles the news of the day in La Vera Cruz, and echoes back the thunder of our cannon from the shores of the far Pacific. Becoming thus the missionary as well as the schoolmaster of republicanism, it plants among other nations the seeds of freedom, which it has itself ripened upon our soil; and having first contributed to the glory of America at home, it crowns its labor of patriotism by making it better known, and therefore more honored, abroad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address Delivered Before the Alumni and the Senior Class, of the University of North Carolina: In Gerard Hall; On the Day Preceding the Annual Commencement, in June, 1838; Under the Appointment of the Dialectic Society Dear Sir: An agreement has been lately entered into by the two Societies, for the purpose of electing a member annually, and alternately from each body, to deliver an address before the Senior Class and the Alumni of the University, on Wednesday afternoon preceding Commencement. As president of the Diacletic Society, I have the pleasure to inform you that you have been chosen to deliver the address, alluded to above. This being a new, and, we think, an important addition to the exercises of the Commencement, we feel very anxious that it should succeed. - Permit me, therefore, individually and in behalf of the Society, to beg that you will give it the sanction of your name, and recommend it, by your acceptance, to those who may be hereafter selected; for we feel assured that the Society could not have selected an individual, more able to give to the exercise dignity and importance, and place it on a level with the oration delivered before the two Societies, on Wednesday morning. You will please to let me hear from you as soon as you can with convenience. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The threshold ofa glorious career. Under these circumstances, he is at once introduced to the knowledge and notice of every portion of the State: and to this cause has been principally ascribed the degree of superiority which has been manifested in the National Councils, by that public-spirited and patriotic member of the Confederacy, as compared with North Carolina. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Before the Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina, June 2, 1903 When I was a student here about fifteen years ago, many of the college boys and a considerable number of their fathers invariably smiled when a young alumnus arose to address an audience and introduced his remarks with allusions to Classic halls and memories dear. Such salutations were permissible only in great orators and in men whose fore heads were silvered o'er with age. It has, therefore, seemed advisable to me, a mere private in the ranks of speakers, and still painfully young, to bring myself into touch with the occasion by relating a little story that may be of interest to many of you. Maybe it has something to do With my presence here to-day, and maybe it will throw some light upon the erection of one of the recent adornments to this beautiful Campus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address Delivered Before the Alumni and Graduating Class of the University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill, on the Afternoon of June Third, 1841 There is one feeling of disappointment, which every young man, who-exchanges the seclusion of a college for the hustle and business of the world, is bound to meet and endure. He finds the weapons of col lege warfare are not those precisely suited to collisions with men in active life. His Diploma, for which he so long labored, and for which he burned the midnight lamp, and surrendered so many hours, which in vain allured him to idleness and pleasure, he finds entitles him. To but a small share of the honor and consideration of the world, which he had fondly anticipated. He comes at length to see. In it but the cer tificate from his masters, of an apprenticeship honorably ended, author izing him to commence work on his own account. His classical lore which was to be the open sesame to honor and consideration, he carries to a market where few appreciate, and stillfewer will purchase. His small stock of literature and science, which he has collected with toil and gloated over with the feelings of the miser, when he surveys his hidden gold, is converted by the disenchanting touch of the world, into rubbish and stone, not equal to the purchase of one poor penny's worth of bread. He finds that all these things have no exchangeable value, though his after experience teaches him, that they are not with out their use. The mental training which he has received in'their ao quisition, has imparted powers which properly exercised, may enable him to win any prize which he may choose to run for; as the exercise of the chase, where the deer or the boar is the only enemy, may so strengthen the thews and sinews, so nerve the courage, and so sharpen the sagacity, as to qualify the Vota'ry, for the more severe and arduous duties of war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Necessity of Preserving the Memorials of the Past and of Transmitting to Posterity a Just and Impartial History of North Carolina: An Address Delivered Before the Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina, June 4, 1890, in Memorial Hall at Chapel Hill Remarkable as emanating from such a source; surprising in its exhibition of unfairness, I would not say ignorance, on the subject he was treating. Listen, friends and fellow citizens! In 1755 the Assembly of North Carolina passed an act appropriating 6,000, equal to $150,000 in the money of to-day, for the endowment of a public school for the Province, and resolved "that under a sense of the many advantages that will arise to the Province from giving our youth a liberal education, whether considered in a moral, religious or political light, a public school or seminary of learning be erected and properly endowed, and for effecting the same the sum of 6,000 already appropriated for that purpose be properly applied." But earlier than this. In his will, dated July 5, 1754, Col. James Innes, of the Cape Fear, and at the time Commander-in-chief of the expedition to the Ohio against the "French and their Indians," gave his plantation, Point Pleasant, a considerable personal estate, his library and 100 sterling "for the use of a free school for the benefit of the youth of North Carolina." This bequest, says Col. Saunders, was the first private bequest of the kind in the history of the State. But more remarkable still was the action of the Halifax Congress of November, 1776. This Congress adopted a Constitution and Bill of Rights for the people of North Carolina. It came together on the eve of a great civil war to deliberate upon the most solemn, delicate and difficult of all human undertakings. The time of its meeting was memorable. Rejoicings for the victory of Moore's Creek were still filling the air; the skirmishings at Lexington and Concord and the battle of Bunker's Hill had taken place the April and June of the previous year.
