Download or read book The American Frontier written by Kenneth E. Lewis and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Frontier: An Archaeological Study of Settlement Pattern and Process focuses on general rules or laws for the evolution of all agrarian frontiers, emphasizing those that are expanding. A variety of frontiers is also discussed in addition to the agrarian type to pinpoint similarities and differences. Organized into 11 chapters, this book first elucidates the processes of frontier colonization, and then describes the frontier model employed for the interpretation of documentary and material evidence for the examination of the development of South Carolina frontier. Some chapters then focus on the examination of South Carolina's colonial past in terms of the model to determine its degree of conformity with the latter and to set the stage for the archaeological study; the development of archaeological hypotheses; and a consideration of the material record. Other types of frontiers are characterized by separate developmental processes, and several of these are discussed in Chapter 10 as avenues for further research. This book will be valuable to scholars in several fields, including history, geography, and anthropology. Historical archaeologists will find it especially useful in designing research in former colonial areas and in modeling additional kinds of frontier change.

Book excerpt: Americans have a fine tradition of spelling words one way and pronouncing them another. While every region of the country has contributed to this tradition, South Carolinians have elevated the practice to an art. A classic South Carolina example is the name Huger, which is pronounced YOO-JEE by natives. This dictionary includes some 400 South Carolina names, their peculiar pronunciations, and brief stories about their origins. Many folks hailing from other parts may consider these pronunciations just plain wrong, but rest assured South Carolinians will roll their eyes when those folks ask for directions to HUE-GER Street!

This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forgotten tales of Charleston's Civil War history have been collected into this new compendium for today's history lovers. In a city as old as Charleston, it's only natural for some stories to become less well-known over time, but the Palmetto State's history should never be forgotten entirely. Author Margaret Middleton Rivers Eastman recounts some of Charleston's amazing Civil War stories that have faded from memory, including the shady story of how an association of Charleston elites conspired to push South Carolina toward secession in 1860, and the Stone Fleet of old whaling ships that were sunk in Charleston Harbor in an attempt to choke out Confederate blockade runners, as well as a cast of real-life characters such as Amarinthia Yates Snowden, William Richard Catheart, and Tom Lockwood, just to name a few.
