Book excerpt: In this thesis, we propose a formal energy model which allows an analytical study of energy consumption, for the first time in the context of population protocols. Population protocols model one special kind of sensor networks where anonymous and uniformly bounded memory sensors move unpredictably and communicate in pairs. To illustrate the power and the usefulness of the proposed energy model, we present formal analyses on time and energy, for the worst and the average cases, for accomplishing the fundamental task of data collection. Two power-aware population protocols, (deterministic) EB-TTFM and (randomized) lazy-TTF, are proposed and studied for two different fairness conditions, respectively. Moreover, to obtain the best parameters in lazy-TTF, we adopt optimization techniques and evaluate the resulting performance by experiments. Then, we continue the study on optimization for the power-aware data collection problem in wireless body area networks. A minmax multi-commodity netflow formulation is proposed to optimally route data packets by minimizing the worst power consumption. Then, a variable neighborhood search approach is developed and the numerical results show its efficiency. At last, a stochastic optimization model, namely the chance constrained semidefinite programs, is considered for the realistic decision making problems with random parameters. A novel simulation-based algorithm is proposed with experiments on a real control theory problem. We show that our method allows a less conservative solution, than other approaches, within reasonable time.

Book excerpt: As the trends towards decentralization, miniaturization, and longevity of deployment continue in many domains, power management has become increasingly important. In this work, we develop power-aware control strategies for wireless sensor networks to improve the lifetime of the network and to ensure that the desired performance is guaranteed. For the case of static networks (networks of agents with no mobility), we identify the problem of the effects of power variations on the performance of an individual sensing device and on the entire network. To address this problem in a randomly deployed sensor network comprising of sensing devices whose sensing range is a function of transmitted power, we propose power-aware controllers to compensate for the variations in available power and maintain desired performance. We also propose a novel energy-efficient sleep-scheduling scheme that is random in nature and allows limited coordination among neighboring sensors for making switching decisions. This scheme is based on the concept of a hard-core point process from stochastic geometry, in which neighboring points are allowed to interact with each other through some predefined interaction laws. For the case of mobile networks (networks of agents with mobility), we propose a solid framework for distributed power-aware mobility strategies that can achieve any desired global objective while minimizing total energy consumption. This goal is achieved by first exploring fundamental trade-offs among various modes of operations of mobile devices and then exploiting these trade-offs for minimizing energy consumption. Through this framework, a whole class of decentralized power-aware controllers emerge for solving canonical problems in multi-agent systems like connectivity maintenance, rendezvous, and coverage control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power consumption becomes the most important design goal in a wide range of electronic systems. There are two driving forces towards this trend: continuing device scaling and ever increasing demand of higher computing power. First, device scaling continues to satisfy Moore’s law via a conventional way of scaling (More Moore) and a new way of exploiting the vertical integration (More than Moore). Second, mobile and IT convergence requires more computing power on the silicon chip than ever. Cell phones are now evolving towards mobile PC. PCs and data centers are becoming commodities in house and a must in industry. Both supply enabled by device scaling and demand triggered by the convergence trend realize more computation on chip (via multi-core, integration of diverse functionalities on mobile SoCs, etc.) and finally more power consumption incurring power-related issues and constraints. Energy-Aware System Design: Algorithms and Architectures provides state-of-the-art ideas for low power design methods from circuit, architecture to software level and offers design case studies in three fast growing areas of mobile storage, biomedical and security. Important topics and features: - Describes very recent advanced issues and methods for energy-aware design at each design level from circuit and architecture to algorithm level, and also covering important blocks including low power main memory subsystem and on-chip network at architecture level - Explains efficient power conversion and delivery which is becoming important as heterogeneous power sources are adopted for digital and non-digital parts - Investigates 3D die stacking emphasizing temperature awareness for better perspective on energy efficiency - Presents three practical energy-aware design case studies; novel storage device (e.g., solid state disk), biomedical electronics (e.g., cochlear and retina implants), and wireless surveillance camera systems. Researchers and engineers in the field of hardware and software design will find this book an excellent starting point to catch up with the state-of-the-art ideas of low power design.

Book excerpt: Recent technological advances have enabled distributed micro-sensing for large scale information gathering through a network of tiny, low power devices or nodes equipped with programmable computing, multiple sensing and communication capabilities. This network of sensor nodes, known as a wireless sensor network, has revolutionized remote monitoring applications because of its ease of deployment, ad hoc connectivity and cost-effectiveness. In this dissertation, we design distributed routing protocols for minimizing energy consumption in a sensor network. There are two main contributions of this work. The first contribution is the design of an energy aware multiple path routing protocol to route heavy data traffic between a source and a destination node in a sensor network. The protocol spreads the routing load between the source and destination nodes over a large number of sensor nodes to minimize disparity in the energy levels of the sensor nodes. We also grade the multiple paths based on their route length to support time critical queries on the shortest available paths. The second contribution is the design of a communication architecture that supports distributed query processing to evaluate spatio-temporal queries within the network. We represent these queries by query trees and distribute query operators to appropriate sensor nodes. As operator execution demands high computation capability, we propose use of a heterogenous sensor network where query operators are assigned to sparsely deployed resource-rich nodes within a dense network of low power sensor nodes. We design an adaptive, decentralized, low communication overhead algorithm to determine an operator placement on the resource-rich nodes in the network to minimize cost of transmitting data in the routing tree constructed to continuously retrieve data from a set of spatially distributed geographical regions to the sink. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to build an energy aware routing infrastructure to enable in-network processing of spatio-temporal queries. In order to maximize energy savings the proposed multiple path routing protocol can be used to route data between the nodes that form the routing tree.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: In wireless sensor networks, every sensor communicates with other sensors directly or indirectly through intermediate sensors within its transmission range. Since each sensor is battery operated, power aware routing is very important in sensor networks. In this dissertation, we study power aware routing to maximize network lifetime in an asymmetric model and to minimize the total power consumption in a symmetric model. We develop effective heuristics for the aforementioned power-aware routing problems. First, we consider the problem of broadcasting messages in a wireless energy-limited network so as to maximize network lifetime. An O(e log e) algorithm to construct a broadcast tree that maximizes the critical energy of the network following the broadcast is developed. Additionally, we propose two new greedy heuristics to construct minimum energy broadcast trees. Second, we show that the problem of routing messages for point-to-point communication so as to maximize network lifetime is NP-hard. In our online model, each message has to be routed without knowledge of future route requests. We developed also a heuristic to maximize network lifetime. Finally we study the problem of power assignment for symmetric communication. We show that two incremental power heuristics for power assignment have an approximation ratio of 2. Enhancements to these heuristics are proposed. For the aforementioned power-aware routing heuristics, we give simulation results comparing new heuristics and previously published heuristics. Our extensive simulations show that our heuristics improve network lifetime significantly in the asymmetric model and reduce total energy consumption in the symmetric model.

Book excerpt: "Wireless sensor networks are composed of a few to several thousand sensors deployed over an area or on specific objects to sense data and report that data back to a sink either directly or through a series of hops across other sensor nodes. There are many applications for wireless sensor networks including environment monitoring, wildlife tracking, security, structural heath monitoring, troop tracking, and many others. The sensors communicate wirelessly and are typically very small in size and powered by batteries. Wireless sensor networks are thus often constrained in bandwidth, processor speed, and power. Also, many wireless sensor network applications have a very low tolerance for latency and need to transmit the data in real time. Data compression is a useful tool for minimizing the bandwidth and power required to transmit data from the sensor nodes to the sink; however, compression algorithms often add a significant amount of latency or require a great deal of additional processing. The following papers define and analyze multiple approaches for achieving effective compression while reducing latency and power consumption far below what would be required to process and transmit the data uncompressed. The algorithms target many different types of sensor applications from lossless compression on a single sensor to error tolerant, collaborative compression across an entire network of sensors to compression of XML data on sensors. Extensive analysis over many different real-life data sets and comparison of several existing compression methods show significant contribution to efficient wireless sensor communication"--Abstract, page iv.
