Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Indians of the Santa Barbara Islands in California Having been requested to write a short account of th 6 Indians of the Santa Barbara Islands I accepted the invitation with pleasure, though with some misgivings. The fact is that next to nothing is known about these now extinct Indians, and the few notices extant are so scattered in rare books and periodicals of an evanescent nature, that it would take months and even years to gather them together. In other words our historical knowledge of the Indians is too small to be very interesting though just on that account the more valuable. There has never appeared in print any connective narrative of these Indians, and the following notes have been culled from what literature I could find without going outside of San Francisco, together with notes made during my visits to these islands in 1873 and 1897. At the earliest of these visits the Indians had already been totally extinct for twenty years. While the skulls and skeletons presented to the Society were collected only on the Island of Santa Rosa, I have thought it best to include in this account all the other islands of the channel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of the Indians of California As regards the province of speech, I feel no such hesitation of competence, but here again the subject matter is an essentially dis tinct one, besides being of a nature which generally impresses as technical. The relation of language to civilization is undoubtedly closer than that of head form or skin color, but it is far from in timate. I have therefore considered speech only in so far as the accumulating knowledge of the languages of California has led to their classification on a genetic or historical basis and thus contributes to the insight of the origin, movements, and relationship of the several nations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of the Indians of California The religious practices of the Indians of California fall into three well marked divisions: (1) such Observances as are fol lowed and executed by individuals, although their perpetuation is traditionary and tribal; that is to say, customary Observances; (2) individual practices resting upon a direct personal commun ication of an individual with the supernatural world; in other words, shamanism; (3) Observances and practices which are not only the common property of the tribe by tradition, but in which the entire tribe or community directly or indirectly participates; in other words, ceremonies. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of the Luiseno Indians of Southern California In offering the results of several years research work among the Mission Indians, I have purposely avoided any attempt to give to the material collected either a technically scientific or a literary form; my object being to put into the hands of those who may care to use them the documents of the case, as it were, as nearly at first hand as possible. The bare statement of a fact or rendering of a myth may be sufficient where all the premises are known; but the Mission In dians have been long unknown or misunderstood. Only frag ments of the past remain, and in their elucidation the character of the narrator plays an important part. The personal form of narrative has therefore often been employed. This is purely a matter of convenience and should be accepted as such. The words of the interpreter are used whenever possible in literal form, his rendering being faithfully given.
