Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Canadian history has no shortage of stories about disasters and accidents, the phenomena of risk, upset, and misfortune have been largely overlooked by historians. Disasters get their due, but not so the smaller-scale accident where fate is more intimate. Yet such events often have a vivid afterlife in the communities where they happen, and the way in which they are explained and remembered has significant social, cultural, and political meaning. An Accidental History of Canada brings together original studies of an intriguing range of accidents stretching from the 1630s to the 1970s. These include workplace, domestic, childhood, and leisure accidents in colonial, Indigenous, rural, and urban settings. Whether arising from colonial power relations, urban dangers, perils in resource extraction, or hazardous recreations, most accidents occur within circumstances of vulnerability, and reveal precarity and inequities not otherwise apparent. Contributors to this volume are alert to the intersections of the settler agenda and the elevation of risk that it brings. Indigenous and settler ways of understanding accidents are juxtaposed, with chapters exploring the links between accidents and the rise of the modern state. An Accidental History of Canada makes plain that whether they are interpreted as an intervention by providence, a miscalculation, an inevitability, or the result of observable risk, accidents – and our responses to them – reveal shared values.

Few books ... approach the combination of fine writing, radical honesty, and endless optimism found [in these] veterinary tales.” (Booklist, starred review) With insight and humor, Dr. Philipp Schott shares tales from the unlikely path he took into his career as a veterinarian and anecdotes from his successful small-animal clinic. Dr. Schott brings to his writing the benefit of many years of expertise. Wisdom he imparts on readers includes the best way to give your cat a pill, how to prevent your very handy dog from opening a fridge, and how to handle your fish when it has half-swallowed another. Through these and other experiences, Dr. Schott also learned that veterinary medicine is as much, if not more, about the people as it is the animals. And he will have you laughing and crying as you embark on this journey of discovery with him. “Filled with heartwarming stories any animal lover will enjoy. It’s informative and entertaining, much like our pets themselves!” ― eresa Rhyne, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Dog Lived (and So Will I) “Who amongst us animal lovers hasn’t fantasized being a vet? Well, read Philipp Schott’s highly entertaining and informative book and learn exactly what you’d be in for―all the poignancy, hilarity, and plain hard work. You may decide to keep your day job, but you’ll be a much better animal companion for having picked up the many insider tips Schott imparts.” ―Barbara Gowdy, award-winning author of The White Bone and Helpless

Book excerpt: With a new "10 years later" epilogue for every chapter, comes an eye-opening assessment of American power and deglobalization in the bestselling tradition of The World is Flat and The Next 100 Years. Near the end of the Second World War, the United States made a bold strategic gambit that rewired the international system. Empires were abolished and replaced by a global arrangement enforced by the U.S. Navy. With all the world's oceans safe for the first time in history, markets and resources were made available for everyone. Enemies became partners. We think of this system as normal - it is not. We live in an artificial world on borrowed time. In The Accidental Superpower, international strategist Peter Zeihan examines how the hard rules of geography are eroding the American commitment to free trade; how much of the planet is aging into a mass retirement that will enervate markets and capital supplies; and how, against all odds, it is the ever-ravenous American economy that - alone among the developed nations - is rapidly approaching energy independence. Combined, these factors are doing nothing less than overturning the global system and ushering in a new (dis)order. For most, that is a disaster-in-waiting, but not for the Americans. The shale revolution allows Americans to sidestep an increasingly dangerous energy market. Only the United States boasts a youth population large enough to escape the sucking maw of global aging. Most important, geography will matter more than ever in a de-globalizing world, and America's geography is simply sublime.

Book excerpt: With photos by Steven Evans. Northrop Frye once called Toronto "a good place to mind your own business," and until the 1960s that was about the best that could be said for it. Toronto had no street life, no sidewalk cafes, no festivals, no downtown gathering place. It was a city of sober reticence. "Accident," writes Robert Fulford "plays a role in the building of any city. It has played a major role in the transformation of Toronto." That transformation began with the opening in 1965 of the New City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square. Since then, Toronto has changed from a private city, seemingly without a collective identity, to a public one - a transformation that came about through the series of (mostly) happy accidents chronicled in this vastly entertaining urban tour. Fulford, who grew up beside Lake Ontario and has lived in Toronto all his life, writes brilliantly about the city's architecture, its commercial development, its ravines, its monuments, its man-made underground, and its people - from Jane Jacobs, whose iconoclastic ideas on urban planning have had a profoundly positive effect on Toronto (where she ended up living mostly by accident), to Fred Gardiner, whose controversial expressway remains an eyesore decades after it was built. Even the most knowledgeable Torontonian will be informed and entertained by Fulford's graceful erudition. Visitors will find the book an invaluable introduction to a city viewed by foreigners as a model of livable urbanity - and by many Canadians as the very symbol of smug self-satisfaction. Whatever your view of Toronto, it will be challenged and deepened by this original, insightful, and thoroughly engaging book.
