This book was released on 2021-10-08 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least 107 amphibian species belonged to seven families were recorded to inhabit the forests of Peninsular Malaysia. However, from time to time, many new species were found and described. These include two species of frog from genus Limnonectes (L. utara and L. selatan) and two species of frog from genus Amolops (A. gerutu and A.australis). From these findings, it showed that our forests are very rich with amphibian species. More potential areas, especially the upland systems need to be explored and studied extensively. Attention also needs to be given to cryptic species complex, which may consist of more than one species. This book is written to reveal and distribute the information on amphibian fauna of Bukit Larut Forest Reserve, Perak; the most popular biodiversity hotspot in Peninsular Malaysia. The information is based on our long-term study and survey of this area, starting in 2000–2018. Currently, 55 species of amphibians from seven families were recorded to inhabit Bukit Larut Forest Reserve. These include five species of bufonids, 10 dicroglossids, six megophrys, nine microhylids, 12 ranids, 11 rhacophorids and two ichthyopiids. The book also discusses the altitudinal range of the frog species which can be encountered at the lower part (< 300 m a.s.l.), upper part (> 900 m a.s.l.) and both lower and upper parts of Bukit Larut. This book also includes plentiful photos of amphibians which were photographed, mostly in their natural environments. It also includes the latest nomenclature, morphology, colouration and size, natural history, location and distribution of each frog species.

Book Synopsis Measuring and Monitoring Biological Diversity by : Ronald Heyer
Download or read book Measuring and Monitoring Biological Diversity written by Ronald Heyer and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring and Monitoring Biological Diversity is the first book to provide comprehensive coverage of standard methods for biodiversity sampling of amphibians, with information on analyzing and using data that will interest biologists in general. In this manual, nearly fifty herpetologists recommend ten standard sampling procedures for measuring and monitoring amphibian and many other populations. The contributors discuss each procedure, along with the circumstances for its appropriate use. In addition, they provide a detailed protocol for each procedure's implementation, a list of necessary equipment and personnel, and suggestions for analyzing the data. The data obtained using these standard methods are comparable across sites and through time and, as a result, are extremely useful for making decisions about habitat protection, sustained use, and restoration—decisions that are particularly relevant for threatened amphibian populations.

Book excerpt: A review of the Araceae of Peninsular Malaysia, including its off-shore islands, is presented as a precursor to revising the family for the Flora of Peninsular Malaysia project. The aroid flora of Peninsular Malaysia comprises 28 genera and ca 140 indigenous (of which17 provisionally accepted) with 25 species (ca 17%) endemic. Peninsular Malaysia has no endemic aroid genera. As compared to Thailand with 29 genera, ca 200 species of which 62 species (ca 30%) are endemic, and Borneo where 38 genera (of which are 10 endemic), and currently 670 indigenous species of which more than 40% are undescribed and about 95% are endemic. An historical review of Araceae research in Peninsular Malaysia, and keys to higher taxa are provided. Most genera are illustrated. Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penerbit Universiti Sains Malaysia

Download or read book RAPTOR WATCH written by ZALLES JORJE I and published by Smithsonian. This book was released on 2000-07-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raptors, including hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls, are wide-ranging, land-based predators found across a broad range of habitats on six continents. Most raptors undertake seasonal migrations, traveling along topographical corridors by which they orient themselves. Tens of thousands of raptors regularly gather at specific stopover sites, which leaves them vulnerable to habitat destruction and systematic hunting -- but also makes these otherwise widely dispersed birds easy to view in their natural environments. Published with Pennsylvania's Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and bringing together information from more than eight hundred raptor experts, this comprehensive guide provides detailed accounts of 388 globally significant "watchsites". For each site, the contributors document raptor species, migration periods, protection status, land use, and monitoring activities. Organized by continent and illustrated with photographs and maps, Raptor Watch offers an accessible, thoroughly researched guide to the viewing opportunities and conservation efforts provided by raptor watchsites around the world.

Book Synopsis The amphibians and reptiles of Luzon Island, Philippines, VIII: the herpetofauna of Cagayan and Isabela Provinces, northern Sierra Madre Mountain Range by : Rafe M. Brown
Download or read book The amphibians and reptiles of Luzon Island, Philippines, VIII: the herpetofauna of Cagayan and Isabela Provinces, northern Sierra Madre Mountain Range written by Rafe M. Brown and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long celebrated for its more than 7,100 islands, the Philippines is a country in Southeast Asia that shares only with Madagascar the distinction of having been designated as both a Megadiverse Nation and a Global Biodiversity Conservation Hotspot. The terrestrial vertebrate fauna of the northeastern Philippines, specifically Luzon Island, has been the subject of intense interest since the first historical explorations. Historically, numerous works considered the biodiversity of Luzon as ?depauperate? in the sense that they was presumed to contain a reduced number of species shared with a continental mainland source. This view has persisted until recently, when a renewed interest in faunistic studies of the northern Philippines has produced a series of notable discoveries, drawing attention to high levels of species diversity and endemism in the northern reaches of the archipelago. We provide the first report on the herpetological biodiversity (amphibians and reptiles) of the northern Sierra Madre Mountain Range, northeast Luzon Island, Philippines. We combine new and historical data, and the results of recent fieldwork, to highlight at least 101 species present in this unique region of the archipelago. Not only is this fauna largely endemic (approximately 70%), but also our results add to a nascent body of literature suggesting that the northern portions of the archipelago may be substantially more diverse than currently appreciated.

Book Synopsis Biodiversity and Cultural Property in the Management of Limestone Resources by : Jaap Vermeulen
Download or read book Biodiversity and Cultural Property in the Management of Limestone Resources written by Jaap Vermeulen and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an enormous need and demand in East Asia for both housing and other building construction, and for the development of infrastructure for transport, water and other utility provision. At the very foundation of all this activity, there is a burgeoning demand for limestone, ... This involves cement production, as well as supply of lime, aggregates and dimensional stone. Limestone is found in all East Asian countries, and cement, the chief limestone product, is a common barometer of economic progress. Many World Bank-finance infrastructure projects use cement and are subject to careful screening to ensure compliance with the World Bank's environmental safeguard policies. This report draws attention to two key aspects of limestone resource management that could help minimize impacts: (i) the selection of an appropriate site for exploitation; and (ii) the management of selected sites during and after quarrying.Through a wide distribution of this report among the various stakeholders, such as, infrastructure engineers, environmental assessment professionals, biodiversity specialists, archaeologists, and other cultural property specialists, the future management of limestone resources of East Asia would receive much needed attention
