It is reached by the trail leading out through Masinga. _ Palomina. An Indian village on the north slopes of the Sierras, on the river of the same name, and at an altitude of 5,000 feet (as given by Mr. Brown). There is a small hamlet on the coast at the mouth of this river which must not be confused with the Indian village at which Mr. Brown collected. I did not visit this locality, but according to all authentic reports which I have been able to gather it has been but slightly deforested, there being but a small area of savanna here. Pammo (see Chiruqua and Macotama). A word here as to just what is meant by a paramo may not be out of place. It is that portion of the high mountain ranges of the tropics which lies between timber-line and the snow-line or the crest of the range, as the case may-be, with a minimtun altitude of more or less than 10,000 feet, but varying considerably in different regions. In the eastern and central Andes of Colombia there exists a heavy temperate zone forest which extends up as high as I2, ooo feet in many places, but this forest is absent in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, where paramo conditions begin at about 10,000 feet. The lower parts of the paramo contain more or less of an abundance of small gnarled trees and shrubs intermingled with bushes and coarse grass, the greater the quantity of moisture present the more abundant the shrubbery. As' the altitude increases the gnarled trees disappear, the shrubs become more stunted, the bushes lower and tougher, while the grasses increase. Certain species of hardy little bushes persist to the very snow-line, as well as the Freilejon. Pueblo V iejv. A village whose inhabitants are entirely Colombians, ...

Book excerpt: This monograph presents a detailed review of the systematics of the species complex of Amazonian frogs Hypsiboas calcaratus – H. fasciatus. These frogs have a wide distribution in the Amazon basin and are a prominent component of scientific collections in the region. The review includes a phylogeny based on genetic evidence and also an integrative analysis of genetics, morphology and bioacoustics to determine species limits. The analysis indicates the existence of 11 candidate species, a five-fold in-crease relative to the current taxonomy. Four of the candidate species are described as new species and one is resurrected from a previous synonymy. The review is thoroughly illustrated with high-quality images. Book excerpt: EIR RELEASES ROAD-MAP TO THE NEW WORLD ECONOMIC ORDER: THE NEW SILK ROAD BECOMES THE WORLD LAND-BRIDGE EIR's comprehensive study of the progress of the Eurasian Land-Bridge project which Lyndon and Helga LaRouche have championed for over 20 years, has finally been completed. The official release date is Dec. 1. The 374-page report, entitled The New Silk Road Becomes the World Land-Bridge, '' is nothing less than a conceptual, and often physical, road-map'' to a New World Economic Order. This path is currently being charted by the nations of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), who are leading a dynamic of global optimism toward real economic development, complete with new credit institutions and major high-technology projects for uplifting all mankind. After an introduction by Helga Zepp-LaRouche, the report lays out the "Metrics of Progress," based on the economic scientific principles developed by renowned physical economist Lyndon LaRouche. It then proceeds region by region, beginning with China and Russia, to present the stunning progress, and plans, which have been made toward the Eurasian Land-Bridge design that the Chinese government laid out in 1996, and other nations have begun to rally behind in recent years. The report, complete with many full-color maps of its featured development corridors, is available in paperback for $50 and hard cover bound for $75.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physical Geography of South America, the eighth volume in the Oxford Regional Environments series, presents an enduring statement on the physical and biogeographic conditions of this remarkable continent and their relationships to human activity. It fills a void in recent environmental literature by assembling a team of specialists from within and beyond South America in order to provide an integrated, cross-disciplinary body of knowledge about this mostly tropical continent, together with its high mountains and temperate southern cone. The authors systematically cover the main components of the South American environment - tectonism, climate, glaciation, natural landscape changes, rivers, vegetation, animals, and soils. The book then presents more specific treatments of regions with special attributes from the tropical forests of the Amazon basin to the Atacama Desert and Patagonian steppe, and from the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Pacific coasts to the high Andes. Additionally, the continents environments are given a human face by evaluating the roles played by people over time, from pre-European and European colonial impacts to the effects of modern agriculture and urbanization, and from interactions with El Niño events to prognoses for the future environments of the continent.
