Book excerpt: 2021 Scholarly Writing Award in the Saskatchewan Book Awards This book presents two of the most important traditions of the Dakota people, the Red Road and the Holy Dance, as told by Samuel Mniyo and Robert Goodvoice, two Dakota men from the Wahpeton Dakota Nation near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada. Their accounts of these central spiritual traditions and other aspects of Dakota life and history go back seven generations and help to illuminate the worldview of the Dakota people for the younger generation of Dakotas, also called the Santee Sioux. "The Good Red Road," an important symbolic concept in the Holy Dance, means the good way of living or the path of goodness. The Holy Dance (also called the Medicine Dance) is a Dakota ceremony of earlier generations. Although it is no longer practiced, it too was a central part of the tradition and likely the most important ceremonial organization of the Dakotas. While some people believe that the Holy Dance is sacred and that the information regarding its subjects should be allowed to die with the last believers, Mniyo believed that these spiritual ceremonies played a key role in maintaining connections with the spirit world and were important aspects of shaping the identity of the Dakota people. In The Red Road and Other Narratives of the Dakota Sioux, Daniel Beveridge brings together Mniyo and Goodvoice's narratives and biographies, as well as songs of the Holy Dance and the pictographic notebooks of James Black (Jim Sapa), to make this volume indispensable for scholars and members of the Dakota community.

WINTER HOW PASSED YOUNG INDIANS DREAMING OF SCALPS AND STEALING HORSES NO TASTE TOR FARMING. THE winter had been spent in listening to the complaints of the Indians upon nearly every subject connected with their manner of life; in looking after the stores for issue, Capt. Woodson, Acting Commissary, having been relieved and sent to other fields of "duty; in hearing complaints of white men who came to the agency from the white settlements in Nebraska, looking for stolen horses, as they said, but who had all the appearance of a class who are not averse to taking a hand at stealing an unprotected horse themselves; in hearing recitals of depredations by Indians against white men, and of white men against Indians, and endeavoring to adjust their differences; called upon frequently to attend a night council in an unfrequented lodge, gotten up by some scheming warrior who had an enterprise on foot, which, should he succeed in having it carried out, might add to his importance when brought before the general public. The northern spring was welcomed with more than usual delight, affording, as it did, an opportunity to escape indoor work, and to visit the fields, which, theoretically, were to bud and blossom under the cultivation of the Indians. The interest taken in agriculture by the chiefs was, as heretofore explained, a minus quantity, but then others, not holding exalted positions, might be induced to go into the fields if a proper example were shown them, and commence the long road marked out for their advancement. Great efforts were made, with the limited appliances at hand, to rebuild the fence destroyed by the squaws in the winter. All the work oxen that had not been maliciously killed were yoked to ploughs to break up new...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1869 the federal government sent Captain D.C. Poole to Whetstone Agency, near Yangton, Dakota Territory, to serve as agent to the Brule and Oglala bands of the Sioux or Lakota people. There he witnessed and recorded their first experiment with reservation life--a stressful time of enforced social and cultural change. In these memoirs, first published in 1881 and never before made widely available, Poole depicts the daily life of the agency and the problems of the agent. Despite his lack of insight into American Indian culture, he also created a valuable record of Sioux customs and beliefs. In an insightful new introduction, Raymond J. DeMallie, director of the American Indian Studies Research Institute and professor of anthropology at the University of Indiana, places Poole's memoirs in their nineteenth century context and explains the circumstances surrounding the agent's work at Whetstone Agency.

Book excerpt: The Dakota people, alternatively referred to as Sioux Native Americans or Oceti Sakowin (The People of the Seven Council Fires), have a storied history that extends to a time well before the arrival of European settlers. This work offers a comprehensive history of the Dakota people and is largely based on eyewitness accounts from the Dakota themselves, including legends, traditions, and winter counts. Included are detailed analyses of the various divisions (tribes and bands) of the Dakota people, including the Lakota and Nakota tribes. Topics explored include the Dakotas' early government, the role of women within the Dakota tribes, the rituals and rites of the Dakota people, and the influence of the white man in destroying Dakotan culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President U.S. Grant's national Peace Policy of 1869 set in motion the South Dakota Missionary movement. The peace plan assigned one religious denomination to each Indian Reservation to 'Christianize and civilize' the Indian. When religious groups protested the government's policy of exclusion, the limitations of the policy were lifted in 1881. Soon thereafter, many denominations were allowed to establish missions where they wanted. Soon missions, churches, and schools of many different Christian affiliations dotted the reservations, often within a few miles of one another. In Lakota Sioux Missions, over two hundred historical photographs illustrate the story of the mission era, its intended policy of assimilation, the resistance to change, and eventual compromise.

Book excerpt: "Among the Sioux" is a collection of sketches depicting missionary life among the said tribe of Native Americans. The sketches which make up this little volume are of absorbing interest, and are prepared by one who is abundantly qualified to do so. Rev. R.J. Creswell had large personal acquaintance with many of those of whom he writes and had for years been a diligent student of missionary effort among the Sioux. His frequent contributions to the periodicals on this subject received marked attention. Several of them he gathers together and reprints in this volume, so that while it is not a consecutive history of the Sioux missions it furnishes an admirable survey of the labors of the heroic men and women who have spent their lives in this cause, and furnishes even more interesting reading of their biographies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dakota War (1862) was a searing event in Minnesota history as well as a signal event in the lives of Dakota people. Sarah F. Wakefield was caught up in this revolt. A young doctor’s wife and the mother of two small children, Wakefield published her unusual account of the war and her captivity shortly after the hanging of thirty-eight Dakotas accused of participation in the "Sioux uprising." Among those hanged were Chaska (We-Chank-Wash-ta-don-pee), a Mdewakanton Dakota who had protected her and her children during the upheaval. In a distinctive and compelling voice, Wakefield blames the government for the war and then relates her and her family’s ordeal, as well as Chaska’s and his family’s help and ultimate sacrifice. This is the first fully annotated modern edition of Six Weeks in the Sioux Tepees. June Namias’s extensive introduction and notes describe the historical and ethnographic background of Dakota-white relations in Minnesota and place Wakefield’s narrative in the context of other captivity narratives.
