Book excerpt: In 1973, the National Institute of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice of the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration approved and funded a project, submitted by the Law Enforcement Standards Laboratory (LESL), National Bureau of Standards, to conduct a study of the terminal effects of police handgun ammunition. LESL contracted with the U.S. Army Ballistic Research Laboratories, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, September, 1973, to conduct this study, to prepare a report of their findings and to draft guidelines for the selection of law enforcement service handgun ammunition. The full report entitled, "An Evaluation of Handgun Ammunition," is forthcoming as a publication of the National Institute of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice. The full report will contain a complete description of a model for human incapacitation by handgun bullets, comparisons of presently available factory-loaded handgun cartridges according to their potential to incapacitate humans, to penetrate common materials, and to pose a hazard to bystanders. It will also contain lengthy tables of experimental data which are not included in this summary report.

Book excerpt: What Is Caseless Ammunition Caseless ammunition, also known as caseless cartridges, is a type of weapon-cartridge configuration that does away with the cartridge case. The cartridge case is the component of a weapon-cartridge that is typically responsible for holding the primer, propellant, and projectile together as a single unit. Instead of using a cartridge case, the propellant and primer are attached to the projectile in some other fashion, such as either inside or outside the projectile, depending on the arrangement. This eliminates the need for the cartridge case. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shooting Incident Reconstruction, Third Edition, offers a thorough explanation of matters from simple to complex to help the reader understand the factors surrounding ballistics, trajectory, and shooting scenes. Forensic scientists, law enforcement, and crime scene investigators are often tasked with reconstruction of events based on crime scene evidence, along with the subsequent analysis of that evidence. The use and misuse of firearms to perpetrate crimes from theft to murder necessitates numerous invitations to reconstruct shooting incidents. The discharge of firearms and the behavior of projectiles create many forms of physical evidence that, through proper testing and interpretation by a skilled forensic scientist, can establish what did and what did not occur. Written by the world's most well-respected shooting scene and ballistics experts, the book addresses the terminology, science, and factors involved in reconstructing shooting incident events to solve forensic cases. It covers the full range of related topics including: the range from which a firearm was discharged; the sequence of shots in a multiple discharge shooting incident; the position of a firearm at the moment of discharge; and the position of a victim at the moment of impact. The probable flight path of a projectile and the manner in which a firearm was discharged are also discussed. Case studies illustrate real-world application of technical concepts, supported by over 200 full-color diagrams and photographs. This book will be of value to practicing forensic scientists (firearm and toolmark examiners), ballistics experts, crime scene personnel, police departments, forensic consultants (generalists), attorneys and judges, medical examiners (coroners), and forensic pathologists. New chapters on special reconstructive properties and value of shootings involving sub-machine guns or pseudo automatic firearms, rate of fire with special attention on shot-to-shot time intervals, human factors in shooting incidents Updated and revised glossary terms to fit with new technology and the emergence of standardization of terms by groups such as the Organization of Scientific Advisory Committees Provides clear practice standards and ethical guidelines for those involved in reconstructing shooting scenes

The Paranormal Romance Guild say - "Georgiana Derwent has managed to merge the world of Oxford University, with its rich history and very British traditions with a totally entertaining and plausible vampire story. This is going to be a favourite series." A Tale of the Posh, the Privileged and the Paranormal... The Cavaliers are the most elite society at Oxford University - rich, powerful, and beautiful. No one realises that they are no ordinary students, but a group of aristocratic vampires from the English Civil War. For four hundred years they have groomed the most promising students to run the government, police, and finance in the way the vampires wish, granting them eternal life in return for absolute obedience. When Harriet French arrives at Oxford University from her working class northern state school, she's prepared for a culture shock, but not to become embroiled in the Cavaliers' scheming and bloodlust. Harriet thought she'd be busy enough juggling her demanding tutor, new friends, and the murky world of student politics. But now, she must find the rebel vampire who is killing off the members, stop the Cavaliers from orchestrating a massacre of the year's most beautiful and successful students, and defy the Society to be with the man of her dreams. Oxford Blood is a British, adult, paranormal romance. It's a tale with vampires that aren't afraid to kill and a heroine who's not afraid of sex or her own ambition. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Georgiana Derwent read History at Oxford University. Aside from the vampires, The Cavaliers Series is an exaggerated but fairly accurate portrayal of her time there. She now works in London and lives with her fiance. He's been very supportive throughout the writing of her books, mainly because he likes to claim that all the most attractive characters are based on him. Georgiana fell in love with vampire novels after reading "The Vampire Diaries" back in 2000. At the time it was a struggle to find any similar paranormal romances, a situation that it's fair to say seems to have been rectified in the last few years. She now loves paranormal series such as True Blood, fantasy novels, and modern literary works in roughly equal measure. Ever since her teens, she wanted to write a vampire series. Ever since going to Oxford she wanted to write a book about her experiences there. During a dull few months between finishing university and starting her graduate job, she had the idea of combining the two and "The Cavaliers Series" was born.

Book excerpt: Chemical Analysis of Firearms, Ammunition, and Gunshot Residue, Second Edition continues in the tradition of the popular first edition, filling the void in forensic texts on the subject. While most books on firearms focus solely on the physical aspects of firearms, this book addresses forensic issues relating to the chemical aspects of firearms and ammunition. It draws on the latest published literature including books, scientific papers, technical reports, manufacturer’s literature, newspaper articles, and personal observations and research conducted by the author. This edition is fully updated, introducing the history and development of firearms and ammunition including advances in the chemical analysis of them. Several changes in primer compositions and the particle classification system are addressed with new techniques added on evidence collection and testing methods. Coverage details chemical aspects of forensic firearms casework with particular emphasis on the detection of gunshot residues (GSR), firearm discharge residues (FDR), and cartridge discharge residues (CDR) on a suspect’s skin and clothing surfaces. Two new chapters have been added. One deals with unusual firearms case while the other summarizes a controversial, high-profile Australian case involving inorganic and organic gunshot residue, highlighting the dangers of incorrect forensic evidence and the increased need for careful training of forensic scientists. Fully updated to reflect the latest techniques and tests for particle and chemical classification Provides a complete history of firearms and ammunition development as well as advances in the chemical analysis involved in forensic firearm casework Features a one-of-a-kind chapter on processing suspects, a crucial component in many firearms and explosives residue cases The book will serves as a useful to forensic chemists, investigators, ballistics experts, among other professionals serving in a variety of forensic disciplines.
