Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Economic History of the United States The purpose of this book is not to rehearse the events common to political and constitutional histories of the United States, but rather to emphasize the points neglected by them. The keynote of all American history, from whatever standpoint it may be written, is found in the efforts of a virile and ener getic people to appropriate and develop the wonderful natural resources of a new continent and there to realize their ideals of liberty and government. The economic history of the United States is largely the story of the achievements of a people working under free competition, untrammeled by custom, tradition, or political limitations, and whose changing conditions of environment constantly compelled new adapta tions and promoted ingenuity and energy of character. The history of this economic struggle is not one whit less interesting or dramatic than the political history of the same period, while it is absolutely essential to a thorough understanding of the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wealth and Income of the American People: A Survey of the Economic Consequences, of the War The whole world is now passing through an economic crisis such as we have never before seen, a crisis that reminds us Of the close economic solidarity which now links the nations together, and forces us to realize that we can come back to pre-war prosperity only through mutual help and an economic and political policy deeply grounded in common sense. As a result Of the war great empires have collapsed, wealthy nations have lost their supremacy in the economic and political world, and their places have been taken by other nations. Excerpt: ...had hired MacGregor's glens for game preserves, and the inhabitants had been exiled or exterminated. A new variety of nervous organism possessed the world. An organism as different from the organism which preceded it as is the organism of the ox from the organism of the wolf; and this latter organism found its chronicler in Charles Dickens, as its predecessor had found its bard in Scott. Read from this standpoint, the works of Dickens abound with suggestion. Reduced to its ultimate analysis, the fundamental difference between the antique and the modern social type consists in the elimination of courage as an essential quality in a ruling class. This quality being eliminated, the ideal of courage contained in the conception of the gentleman fell, and with the destruction of this conception went the capacity for enthusiasm, the sympathy with the instinct for self-devotion, and, in fine, all the chief attributes of the heroic mind. Taken as a whole, the salient trait which runs through Dickens's writing is fear. Fear both of the unknown and of the known. Many of his best novels have this passion for the foundation of the story. The " Old Curiosity Shop," " Oliver Twist," " Martin Chuzzlewit," where the catastrophe hinges on the terror of Jonas, which makes him murder Tigg. Take at random a passage from " Barnaby Rudge"; the evening at the Maypole when Solomon Daisy fled from the church where he had met Rudge. " A more complete picture of terror than the little man presented, it would be difficult to imagine. The perspiration stood in beads upon his face, his knees knocked together, his every limb trembled, the power of articulation was quite gone; and there he stood, panting for breath, gazing on them with such livid ashy looks, that they...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of American Economics: A Study in the History of Economic Ideas in the United States Prior to the Great Depression Since my arrival in this country in 1930 I have played with a desire to examine the evolution Of economic thought in the United States, but have met with outspoken discouragement on the part of my senior colleagues as well as of my younger ones. Most Of them denied the very existence of any genuine American economic thought. The inspiration, stimulation and assistance of my wife in fluenced me to finally launch this enterprise, but it is with a cer tain temerity that I have begun this hazardous undertaking. Yet the fascination of the work has compensated me generously for all my earlier fears. I did not find myself com'muning with ghosts, as I had been warned, for some of the tales Of departed writerswere alive, and I became enlightened - as I hope my readers will be also - concerning the spirit of American economics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Economic Tendencies: An Economic History of America IN a work portraying economic evolution from a time genera tions in the past down to the latest practicable moment, in order to form a basis as accurate as possible for predicting the future, it is important to know the date of actual writing. The procession of events during the last six years has altered so drastically, and has transformed so many times, the complexion of public opinion, that words must be interpreted in the light of the date of their utterance. This book was begun in the winter of 1912-13, as soon as the data from the census of 1910 had become available, and some portions remain unchanged since then. On the other hand, some statistical features have been brought down to the fall of 1917, with views in the text to correspond. During 1918 and 1919 the diction of the entire book was revised, and in the latter year the order of chapters was shifted. Occasional foot-notes or paragraphs were added which carry with them evidence of their later date. But, since it was manifestly impossible to bring the entire book into consistency with the viewpoint of these later years, unless it were to be entirely rewritten, care was taken to preserve all of the sentiments of the book in substance as they had been written in 1917 or before. The subdivision of the book into four Parts, namely, Back ground, Economic Principles, Data and Social Reactions, was an afterthought. Each of these four parts comprise references to all four of these topics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
