Within this 200+ page volume, then, is to be found a truly informative mass of data (complete with graphs, tables and statistics) and learned analyses pertaining to the twin-focus of its title which will serve as a valuable tool of reference and reflection by all who have an interest in the subject. Ramnik Shah, Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Law This timely book examines the immense surges in immigration since the mid-1990s in Australia and the United States, two of the world s most important settler-receiving countries. Australia s shift to a points-based, skills-oriented system is contrasted with the political deadlock that has prevented any basic change in US immigration policy during this period. Focusing on immigration policy trends, effects on labour markets, successes and failures in integrating massive numbers of new immigrants, and the future of multiculturalism, the book ponders many of the policy dilemmas that confront both countries. Drawing on extensive research findings in the field of immigration policy, this book will prove a fascinating read for both scholars and postgraduate students working on immigration, as well as undergraduates studying courses on Australia and comparisons of the Australian and American policy arenas. Public servants engaged in administering Australian and US immigration policies will also find this book invaluable.

Book Synopsis Nation and Commemoration by : Lyn Spillman
Download or read book Nation and Commemoration written by Lyn Spillman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-28 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do people think when they imagine themselves as part of a nation? Nation and Commemoration answers this question in an exploration of the creation and recreation of national identities through commemorative activities. Extending recent work in cultural sociology and history, Lyn Spillman compares centennial and bicentennial celebrations in the United States and Australia to show how national identities can emerge from processes of 'cultural production'. She systematically analyses the symbols and meanings of national identity in these two 'new nations', identifying changes and continuities, similarities and differences in how visions of history, place in the world, politics, land, and diversity have been used to express nationhood. The result is a deeper understanding, not only of American and Australian national identities, but also of the global process of nation-formation.

Download or read book Australian-Latin American Relations written by E. Kath and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, Australia and Latin America were considered irrelevant to one another. The prevailing perception in Australia had been that Latin America was too remote, disconnected, and politically irrelevant to warrant serious scholarly or public attention. In recent years, this perception has rapidly changed, with Australian universities seeking to attract Latin American students, new diplomatic relations emerging, investment in mining and other business sectors expanding, and a growing fascination in Australia with Latin American food, music, dance and other forms of popular culture. These rapid developments can only properly be understood within the context of broader global transformations underway, including shifts in power relations between the 'Global North' and 'Global South', the rise of key Latin American economies, major technological developments, and ever-increasing global interconnectivity. This pioneering interdisciplinary book ventures into the new space of Australian-Latin American relations, exploring multiple dimensions of the rapidly changing landscape within a global context.

Book Synopsis Science, Sexuality, and Race in the United States and Australia, 1780s-1890s by : Gregory D. Smithers
Download or read book Science, Sexuality, and Race in the United States and Australia, 1780s-1890s written by Gregory D. Smithers and published by Taylor & Francis US. This book was released on 2009 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines transnational history with the comparative analysis of racial formation and reproductive sexuality in the settler colonial spaces of the United States and British Australia. Specifically, the book places "whiteness," and the changing definition of what it meant to be white in nineteenth-century America and Australia, at the center of our historical understanding of racial and sexual identities. In both the United States and Australia, "whiteness" was defined in opposition to the imagined cultural and biological inferiority of the "Indian," "Negro," and "Aboriginal savage." Moreover, Euro-Americans and Euro-Australians shared a common belief that "whiteness" was synonymous with the extension of settler colonial civilization. Despite this, two very different understandings of "whiteness" emerged in the nineteenth century. The book therefore asks why these different racial understandings of "whiteness" – and the quest to create culturally and racially homogeneous settler civilizations – developed in the United States and Australia.
