Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Vacations in Europe Europe is no longer terra Incognita to the cultivated American, and books of travel of the old-fashioned, purely informing type have lost their excuse for being. Nevertheless, the trained man of letters who chooses to take his readers on a European ramble is sure of finding a large party ready to be thus personally conducted on a literary journey through scenes which are already more or less familiar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Boy's Vacation Abroad, 1906: An American Boy's Diary of His First Trip to Europe We suggested to young King that he reproduce the Dedication in his own handwriting and wrote him to this effect. His answer was so good that we thought we would tell the readers about it. It ran as follows: "I wrote out that Dedication the best I could and hope it is the correct thing, but must say I think to print it in type would look much better, for I write like a hen, and do not like the idea of writing in this book. Am afraid it will queer the book." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Suggestions to the American Tourist Visiting Europe for the First Time This little volume is not a guide book. It is simply what its title implies: The commonsense experience which tourists meet and must daily heed, or practical suggestions to Americans traveling in Europe for the first time. It is no indifferent task for one who has perchance never traveled much, even in the United States, to undertake a tour across the Atlantic. Everything is so new, so unknown; the customs are, in many respects, so different from ours, and the anxiety and excitement of rapid traveling are so constant a strain upon the nervous system, that any suggestions which may render the tour less perplexing and at the same time more profitable are of value. The little and apparently unimportant things are carefully noted with details, even to occasional repetition, because they give the aggregate worry and labor of a tour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europe Viewed Through American Spectacles By those who have visited Europe this volume will be found especially interesting, entertaining, and amusing; to those who intend to visit Europe, the author thinks it will be more valuable than most of the guide-books; and to those who do not expect to make a European tour, it will furnish much practical information that cannot be found in any other volume extant. To the Press of the country generally, which has so largely published fragmentary extracts from this tour of Europe, it is respectfully dedicated, in the hope that it will still further aid in enabling all Americans to see Europe through "American Spectacles." To our friend and fellow-traveler of ante-bellum times, that prince of good fellows, Murat Halstead, Esq., Editor of the Cincinnati Commercial, and our excellent friends. Colonel George W. Childs, Editor of the Philadelphia Ledger, and Hugh J. Hastings, Esq., of the New York Commercial, all of whom have given to their readers such copious extracts, we especially tender our thanks for a generous appreciation of our labors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High-Class Vacation Party to Europe: New York to Rome and Back, July and August, 1895 This Special High-class Summer Party has been organized under the arrangements of the well-known Tourist Agents, Henry Gaze & Sons, 113 Broadway, New York, London, Rome, etc., with a view to enable Ladies and Gentlemen who may be acquainted with one another, in Brooklyn and other points, to take a Summer Outing under especially-favorable conditions, not usually obtainable in the ordinary vacation parties which are regularly organized every Summer. The tour has been carefully planned, with a view to giving the intending passengers a healthful and instructive Summer Vacation among some of the most-interesting and historic cities of Europe, and at the lowest rates practicable for carrying out the tour on lines combining comfort and a certain amount of exclusiveness. Messrs. Gaze & Sons - who have made a special study of the organization of select parties of individuals who do not wish to work a tour out under difficulties - have been instructed to make special arrangements for this high-class vacation party, and no pains have been spared to anticipate all possible contingencies, with a view to render the carrying out of the tour perfectly successful in every respect. The ocean travel will be first-class - traveling by an Anchor Liner. The railroad travel in Great Britain being cushion-seated observation cars - for all practical purposes as comfortable as the English "first," and less expensive (second-class does not exist on many railways in Great Britain); while all the railroad traveling on the Continent in Europe will be second-class throughout. The following are Some, among Many, Advantages of Conducted Tours: Plan Of Travel. Long experience and an intimate knowledge of nearly every part of the world, enable Messrs. Gaze & Sons to arrange a round of travel in the most-advantageous manner, so as to secure the largest amount of satisfaction derivable from the tour, and to allot the necessary time for visiting the sights at the principal places of interest, in order not to have insufficient time in one city and a needlessly-lengthened stay in another. Inclusive Charges. It is no slight advantage to know almost exactly the sum necessary for any given tour, including hotel, travel, entrance fees to sights, douceurs at hotels, omnibuses, carriage drives, and the numerous incidentals which are constantly occurring. These being distinctly specified and included, enable the traveler to form a correct estimate of his outlay; whereas those acting independently often find the cost of a tour beyond what they had anticipated. The annoyances arising from the adjustment of hotel accounts, and perpetual demands for petty expenses, are also entirely avoided by this system. Association. The number of persons in each excursion is strictly limited, so that all may receive personal attention; and in each party there are sure to be found kindred spirits, with whom it will be agreeable to associate, while those who prefer more-independent action have the fullest freedom. Perfect liberty of action can be enjoyed or there is pleasant association for those who desire it. European Conductor. Messrs. Gaze's traveling staff, who escort these excursions, have been carefully selected. They are not "couriers," but gentlemen of sufficient education and culture to be able to afford valuable information and to deal with difficulties; while their long experience and intimate acquaintance with the routes enable them to be of very-great service to those who accompany the party. The conductors are pleased to give special attention to ladies traveling alone, so that ladies unaccompanied by gentlemen need not hesitate about joining these excursions. A short experience will suffice to convince the most-incredulous that this system of travel enables one to see far more than could be accomplished by ind

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tour Two: A Trip to Europe and What Came of It The gathering at Berlin was truly remarkable, Hindu and Japanese mingling with Anglo Saxon, Teuton and CeIn Dr. Bisbee's book A Summer Flight you will find many humorous allusions to incidents of the trip as far as the whole company traveled to gether. He calls us angels, but says very little about the ladies in the party, leaving the reader somewhat in doubt as to whether the angels were mostly men or the men mostly angels. Of course many little events transpired that might escape the observation of a mere man, but you will enjoyhis book, which is a charming description of cer tain phases of the journey upon which I have not touched. The American party was large and unusually companionable. We were divided into small groups on landing, and were so well organized that we felt throughout like an invading army under marching orders. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zigzag Journeys in Europe: Vacation Rambles in Historic Lands HE aim of the publishers and writer, in preparing this volume for young people, is to give a view of the principal places in England and France where the most interesting events have occurred; and, by a free use of pictures and illustrative stories, to present historic views of the two countries in an entertain ing and attractive manner. An American teacher takes a class of boys on a vacation tour to England and France, and interests them in those places that illustrate the different periods of English and French history. It is his purpose to give them in this manner a picturesque view of present scenes and past events, and to leave on their minds an outline of history for care ful reading to fill. A few of the stories are legendary, as the Jolly Harper Man and the Wise Men of Gotham; but these illustrate the quaint manners and customs of the Middle Ages. Nearly all of the stories that relate to history are strictly true. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Months in Europe: A Record of a Summer Vacation Abroad The author has had in mind only to give a brief but faithful account of what will be most likely to interest the traveler who goes for profit as well as pleasure. He has endeavored to represent things fairly, and without that gush of admiration with which the coolest of us often see things for the first time. Personal allusions and experiences, which are of no value or interest to a stranger, have been as far as possible avoided, and the single aim has been kept in view of giving a plain and straight forward account of a summer's tour. If the book should recall pleasing memories to those who have had the pleasure of a foreign trip, and, most of all should be instrumental in inducing young people to visit, even hastily, the old world, and thus have the life-long enjoyment of the pleasure and knowledge which such a trip gives, the author will be more than satisfied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Weeks in Europe: The Vacation of a Busy Man Having made up his mind to do it, the author naturally sought a motive which would excuse him to himself. This is the motive: A great many people overestimate the amount of time, money and preliminary preparation required for a trip abroad. A timid few are deterred by the over drawn terrors of possible seasickness. But, to quote the boy who played hookey, what's five minutes' licking to five hours' fun? Most books of travel state that you should give three months to Florence, for example, but map out a three weeks' program in that city, in case you are 'in a hurry. Such works are valuable to the student but they slam the door in the face of the man Of business who is fortunate to have three weeks in which to see the whole of Italy. Our country is filled with busy men who appreciate the advantages and pleasures of travel but are kept at home by its fancied difficulties. To such, this book is offered as a proof of what can be done in a six weeks' vacation, nineteen days of which were spent on the ocean. If it opens the slammed door to that class of toilers and reopens it to the author, he will be satisfied. A glance at our itinerary will show how small Europe really is and how much of it can be covered in a short time by energetic travelers. The author of this book has met the essential require ments of the Committee of Eight, but, believing that a sixth grade child will not make the association between the European Beginnings of our history and our own history, if the two are not given in close connection with out the break of a summer vacation, She has taken the liberty of shortening the time allotted to the study of European Beginnings, and has combined this subject with American history for a year's course.
