Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Thought: From Puritanism to Pragmatism and Beyond We, as a country, have been told that we have no philosophy, that we do hut reflect the speculations of other lands. This is not wholly true. We have had philosophers, original thinkers who, though their influence may not have reached abroad, were makers of history at home. So a study of the speculative movements in America leads to a clearer understanding of our national character, for these very movements are so closely allied to our history and our literature that they may be said to form a background for both. The colonial background I have presented in a previous volume - American Philosophy: The Early Schools. This described the most important forms of thought as they crossed from the Old to the New World, developed during two centuries, and slowly prepared the way for the native philosophy of Emerson. The present work condenses the previous account and continues the development of national thought until it emerges triumphantly in pragmatism - a typical American philosophy. Book excerpt: [T]he history of evolution in America... has been from the cosmic to the organic, has passed through the logical phases from supernatural election to natural selection.-from "The Forerunners of Evolutionism"From his perch at the beginning of the enlightened and scientific 20th century, Woodbridge Riley surveys the history of intellectualism in America. First published in 1915 and still delightfully informative, included is a comprehensive overview of philosophical movements in the United States: Puritanism (of the early colonials) Early Idealism (of Samuel Johnson and Jonathan Edwards) Deism (of Franklin and Jefferson) Materialism (and the influence of the French) Realism (and the influence of the Scottish) Transcendentalism (of Emerson, et. al.) Evolutionism (of John Fiske and James Mark Baldwin) Modern Idealism (and the influence of the Germans) Pragmatism (of John Dewey and William James) Modern Realism (of the scientific 20th century)From how we as a would-be nation conceived of God's place in politics before the Revolution to how we think about modern art and modern science, this is an invigorating read.American scholar WOODBRIDGE RILEY (1869-1933) was professor of philosophy at Vassar College and lecturer at the Sorbonne. He is also the author of The Founder of Mormonism (1903), and was a contributor to the four-volume Cambridge History of English Literature (1917-1921).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating study examines America's complex and confusing history of arguing with itself over religion and secularism, God and politics, church and state. Hundreds of books are devoted to the ever-timely subject of the separation of church and state in America, but none does exactly what Christian Nation?: The United States in Popular Perception and Historical Reality does. Unlike other studies, this intriguing examination asks the right questions, defines the terms of the debate, explores the widely diverging points of view with equal respect for all sides, and provides insightful commentary and factual conclusions that cut through the clutter. The book begins with several questions: Is the United States a "Christian Nation?" Has it ever been? Was it ever meant to be? What did the Founding Fathers say? How has this issue been interpreted by various individuals and factions over the centuries? The author then surveys the vast literature on this topic, including the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence and the competing and/or complimentary views of various Founding Fathers to arrive at the answers—and, at long last, the truth.
