Book Synopsis Aristotle's Syllogism and the Creation of Modern Logic by : Lukas M. Verburgt
Download or read book Aristotle's Syllogism and the Creation of Modern Logic written by Lukas M. Verburgt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-26 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a bold new vision on the history of modern logic, Lukas M. Verburgt and Matteo Cosci focus on the lasting impact of Aristotle's syllogism between the 1820s and 1930s. For over two millennia, deductive logic was the syllogism and syllogism was the yardstick of sound human reasoning. During the 19th century, this hegemony fell apart and logicians, including Boole, Frege and Peirce, took deductive logic far beyond its Aristotelian borders. However, contrary to common wisdom, reflections on syllogism were also instrumental to the creation of new logical developments, such as first-order logic and early set theory. This volume presents the period under discussion as one of both tradition and innovation, both continuity and discontinuity. Modern logic broke away from the syllogistic tradition, but without Aristotle's syllogism, modern logic would not have been born. A vital follow up to The Aftermath of Syllogism, this book traces the longue durée history of syllogism from Richard Whately's revival of formal logic in the 1820s through the work of David Hilbert and the Göttingen school up to the 1930s. Bringing together a group of major international experts, it sheds crucial new light on the emergence of modern logic and the roots of analytic philosophy in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Book Synopsis American Legal Process by : Bradley S. Shannon
Download or read book American Legal Process written by Bradley S. Shannon and published by Aspen Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-13 with total page 962 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have long been a number of “introduction to law” textbooks (primarily aimed at non-American lawyers) and, more recently, textbooks dealing with legislation and regulation. American Legal Process is perhaps the only work since the creation of Henry M. Hart, Jr. & Albert M. Sacks’ iconic legal process materials to include extended discussions not only of those topics, but also of the judicial process. The Second Edition represents a continuation of and improvement on the first edition. There is no other law textbook quite like it. New to the 2nd Edition: Reorganization along the lines of the three branches of the U.S. government (legislative, executive, and judicial) and Articles I, II, and III of the U.S. Constitution An increase in the number of chapters from four to 13 (including an introductory chapter) to enhance readability and comprehension New/expanded discussions of current topics in Legal Process, including amicus curiae practice; the use of cameras in the courtroom; corpus linguistics; decisional methodology; sua sponte decision making; and the use of foreign law Professors and students will benefit from: Increases in content through an expanded use of notes Plain, readable text; very straightforward presentation Fascinating subject matter
Book Synopsis Galen and the Syllogism by : Nicholas Rescher
Download or read book Galen and the Syllogism written by Nicholas Rescher and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Nicholas Rescher seeks to settle debates about whether Galen originated the fourth figure of the categorical syllogism. For his definitive evidence, Rescher examines Arabic sources, one of which is "On the Fourth Figure of the Syllogism" by twelfth-century mathematician Ibn al-Salah, and is reproduced here in Arabic with an annotated English translation. Rescher also explores the history and importance of the syllogistic figures in the evolution of logic in Islamic and European cultures, and discusses the debate about the actual number of syllogistic figures.

Book Synopsis On the Syllogism by : Augustus De Morgan
Download or read book On the Syllogism written by Augustus De Morgan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1966 On the Syllogism and Other Logical Writings assembles for the first time the five celebrated memoirs of Augustus De Morgan on the syllogism. These are collected together with the more condensed accounts of his researches given in his Syllabus of a Proposed System of Logic an article on Logic contributed to the English Cyclopaedia. De Morgan was among the most distinguished of nineteenth century British mathematicians but is chiefly remembered today as one of the founders of modern mathematical logic. His writings on this subject have been little read, however since apart from his Formal Logic, they lie buried for the most part in inaccessible periodicals. De Morgan’s own later amendments are inserted in the text and the editorial introduction gives a summary of the whole and traces in some detail the course of the once-famous feud with Sir William Hamilton of Edinburgh.
