Book excerpt: Isa Genzken is arguably one of the most important and influential female artists of the past 30 years. Genzken's work - which spans sculptures, paintings, photographs, collages, drawings, artist's books, films, installations and public works - has been part of the artistic discourse since she began exhibiting in the mid-1970s, and a new generation of artists has been inspired by her radical inventiveness over the last decade - a period in which she has redefined assemblages. Published to accompany Genzken's first comprehensive retrospective in the USA, this book is the most complete monograph on the artist available in English. It presents Genzken's career in essays exploring the unfolding of her practice from 1973 until today and an illustrated chronological overview of her most important bodies of work and key exhibitions. 0Exhibition: Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA (23.11.2013-10.03.2014) ; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, USA (12.04.-03.08.2014) ; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, USA (14.09.2014-04.01.2015)

Book Synopsis Michael Ray Charles by : Cherise Smith
Download or read book Michael Ray Charles written by Cherise Smith and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Ray Charles is the most comprehensive presentation yet of the work of an artist who rose to prominence in the 1990s for works that engaged American stereotypes of African Americans. With a background in advertising and an archivist’s inquisitiveness, Charles developed an artistic practice that made startling use of found images and offered critiques of the narratives they fostered. Immersing readers in the imagination of this daring painter, Michael Ray Charles celebrates and contextualizes a singular, major figure in the art world. Art historian Cherise Smith collaborated with the artist to curate nearly one hundred color plates documenting nearly thirty years of visual art. These plates are framed by an interview with the artist and by Smith’s own deep interpretive essay on Charles’s work. Smith explores topics ranging from the controversy resulting from Charles’s provocative appropriations of stereotypical racial material to his techniques of sampling from popular culture; from his commentaries on African American men and sports to his work with director Spike Lee on Bamboozled. Both clear-eyed and complex, this retrospective demonstrates the significant role that Michael Ray Charles’s work has played in defining what art is today.
Book Synopsis Cuban Memory Wars by : Michael J. Bustamante
Download or read book Cuban Memory Wars written by Michael J. Bustamante and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-02-10 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many Cubans, Fidel Castro's Revolution represented deliverance from a legacy of inequality and national disappointment. For others—especially those exiled in the United States—Cuba's turn to socialism made the prerevolutionary period look like paradise lost. Michael J. Bustamante unsettles this familiar schism by excavating Cubans' contested memories of the Revolution's roots and results over its first twenty years. Cubans' battles over the past, he argues, not only defied simple political divisions; they also helped shape the course of Cuban history itself. As the Revolution unfolded, the struggle over historical memory was triangulated among revolutionary leaders in Havana, expatriate organizations in Miami, and average Cuban citizens. All Cubans leveraged the past in individual ways, but personal memories also collided with the Cuban state's efforts to institutionalize a singular version of the Revolution's story. Drawing on troves of archival materials, including visual media, Bustamante tracks the process of what he calls retrospective politics across the Florida Straits. In doing so, he drives Cuban history beyond the polarized vision seemingly set in stone today and raises the prospect of a more inclusive national narrative.
Download or read book Jay DeFeo written by Jay DeFeo and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published on the occasion of Jay DeFeo's (1929-89) first exhibition at Mitchell-Innes & Nash featuring 50 key works spanning the years 1965-89, this volume examines DeFeo's distinctive exploration of visual vocabulary, rich materiality and experimental process across the mediums of painting, drawing, photography and rarely seen photocopy works. The catalogue features two double-page spreads of major paintings: "Lotus Eater" from 1974 and "Tuxedo Junction" from 1965/74, the latter having the distinction of being one of the only remaining works which DeFeo worked on while she worked on "The Rose." The essay by Los Angeles-based artist Walead Beshty focuses on the handful of forms and objects that appear and reappear in DeFeo's work, accruing meaning incrementally over time.

Book Synopsis Retrospective Assessment of Mental States in Litigation by : Robert I. Simon
Download or read book Retrospective Assessment of Mental States in Litigation written by Robert I. Simon and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2008-08-13 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why did the defendant do it?" Mental health professionals are asked to help courts answer this question. To serve justice, the law calls for evidence of the mental state at the time a crime is committed, of suicide intent in civil litigation, and of mental capacity in contract litigation. The law asks psychiatrists and psychologists to retrospectively determine mental states -- a daunting task made even more difficult by the passage of time, the uncertain credibility of witnesses, the paucity of collateral sources of information, and often the death of the person in question. This is the first book dedicated entirely to the retrospective assessment of mental states. This fascinating book explores the role of the psychiatrist and psychologist, as an expert witness in litigation, in rendering a retrospective judgment of an individual's mental state. Distinguished contributors apply their expertise in psychiatry, psychology, and the law to address the problems of retrospective assessment. With the goal of developing guidelines for more accurate retrospective assessment of mental states, they present topics such as Guidelines for conducting retrospective assessments in children and adults Guidelines for the retrospective assessment without benefit of direct examination Assessments of suicide cases in both civil and criminal litigation Psychological testing and interviewing techniques that may assist in retrospective assessment Methods and analysis to help clinicians and attorneys critically evaluate the search for "truth" about the past. This remarkable book will prove indispensable for helping clinicians, lawyers, and judges better understand the complex and difficult process of retrospective reconstruction of mental states.
