This book was released on 2006-01-08 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The age and condition of the U.S. Coast Guard's polar icebreakers are jeopardizing national security and scientific research in the Arctic and Antarctic, according to an interim report from the National Academies. Because of a shortfall in funding for U.S. polar icebreaking activities, long-term maintenance on these icebreakers has been deferred over the past several years, making the ships inefficient to operate and their technological systems outdated. Congress asked the National Academies to provide a comprehensive assessment of the current and future roles of U.S. Coast Guard polar icebreakers in supporting U.S. operations in the Antarctic and the Arctic, including scenarios for continuing those operations and alternative approaches, the changes in roles and missions of polar icebreakers in the support of all national priorities in the polar regions, and potential changes in the roles of U.S Coast Guard icebreakers in the Arctic that may develop due to environmental change. This brief interim report highlights the most urgent and time-dependent issues, and a final report, expected to be released next summer, will examine the type and number of icebreaking ships that the U.S. requires in the long term and other issues.

Book Synopsis Submarines Under Ice by : Marion D. Williams
Download or read book Submarines Under Ice written by Marion D. Williams and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book treats not only Wilkins's Nautilus expedition of 1931 but the diesel- and battery-powered submarine operations of the l94Os and l95Os as well as the era of nuclear-powered boats. It shows how rapid advances in science and technology helped overcome so many obstacles that today the Arctic Ocean is considered the submariner's private sea." "Author Marion Williams, a member of the U.S. Navy's submarine service for many years, tells the story from the viewpoint of the submariners themselves. To do so, he consulted countless official and unofficial documents and recently declassified reports, interviewed participants, and drew on his own professional knowledge. He provides dramatic details of every operation and also describes the military and political ramifications of each cruise. The narrative is certain to appeal to readers of all ages who enjoy tales of exploration and discovery. Dozens of photographs, many never before published, help bring the story to life."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

This book was released on 2007-03-14 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has enduring national and strategic interests in the polar regions, including citizens living above the Arctic circle and three year-round scientific stations in the Antarctic. Polar icebreaking ships are needed to access both regions. Over the past several decades, the U.S. government has supported a fleet of four icebreakersâ€"three multi-mission U.S. Coast Guard ships (the POLAR SEA, POLAR STAR, and HEALY) and the National Science Foundation's PALMER, which is dedicated solely to scientific research. Today, the POLAR STAR and the POLAR SEA are at the end of their service lives, and a lack of funds and no plans for an extension of the program has put U.S. icebreaking capability at risk. This report concludes that the United States should continue to support its interests in the Arctic and Antarctic for multiple missions, including maintaining leadership in polar science. The report recommends that the United States immediately program, budget, design, and construct two new polar icebreakers to be operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The POLAR SEA should remain mission capable and the POLAR STAR should remain available for reactivation until the new polar icebreakers enter service. The U.S. Coast Guard should be provided sufficient operations and maintenance budget to support an increased, regular, and influential presence in the Arctic, with support from other agencies. The report also calls for a Presidential Decision Directive to clearly align agency responsibilities and budgetary authorities.

This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Updated Edition, June 2017) The operational U.S. polar icebreaking fleet currently consists of one heavy polar icebreaker, Polar Star, and one medium polar icebreaker, Healy. In addition to Polar Star, the Coast Guard has a second heavy polar icebreaker, Polar Sea. This ship suffered an engine casualty in June 2010 and has been non-operational since then. Polar Star and Polar Sea entered service in 1976 and 1978, respectively, and are now well beyond their originally intended 30-year service lives. A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Mission Need Statement (MNS) approved in June 2013 states that "current requirements and future projections ... indicate the Coast Guard will need to expand its icebreaking capacity, potentially requiring a fleet of up to six icebreakers (3 heavy and 3 medium) to adequately meet mission demands in the high latitudes...." The current condition of the U.S. polar icebreaker fleet, the DHS MNS, and concerns among some observers about whether the United States is adequately investing in capabilities to carry out its responsibilities and defend its interests in the Arctic, have focused policymaker attention on the question of whether and when to acquire one or more new heavy polar icebreakers as replacements for Polar Star and Polar Sea. On September 1, 2015, the White House issued a fact sheet in conjunction with a visit to Alaska by President Obama indicating that the Obama Administration wanted to begin building a new polar icebreaker, and that the Obama Administration would also "begin planning for construction of additional icebreakers." A project to acquire a new polar icebreaker was initiated in Coast Guard's FY2013 budget submission. The total acquisition cost of the ship has not been officially estimated but might be roughly $1 billion, including design costs. The project has received about $220.6 million in acquisition funding through FY2017, including $175 million in FY2017 that was provided in the Coast Guard's acquisition account ($25 million) and the Navy's shipbuilding account ($150 million). The Coast Guard's proposed FY2018 budget requests $19 million in acquisition funding for the ship. The Coast Guard's FY2017-FY2021 five-year Capital Investment Plan (CIP) included a total of $780 million in acquisition funding for a new polar icebreaker. The Coast Guard's notional schedule for the polar icebreaker program, which could change, shows a draft Request for Proposals (RFP) being released in the first quarter of FY2017, a final RFP being released in the fourth quarter of FY2017 or the first quarter of FY2018, Coast Guard evaluation of received proposals taking place from the third or fourth quarter of FY2018 through the third or fourth quarter of FY2019, a contract award being made in the third or fourth quarter of FY2019, and construction of the ship beginning in the third or fourth quarter of FY2019. A polar icebreaker that begins construction in FY2019 might enter service in 2023. Polar Star has been refurbished and reentered service in December 2012 for an intended period of 7 to 10 years-a period that will end between December 2019 and December 2022. The Coast Guard is examining the feasibility and potential cost effectiveness of either further extending the service life of Polar Star so as to bridge the time between the end of Polar Star's intended current 7- to 10-year operating period and the entry into service of a new polar icebreaker.
Book Synopsis Report of Operation HighJump by : U S NAVY.
Download or read book Report of Operation HighJump written by U S NAVY. and published by Nimble Books. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operation Highjump, officially titled The United States Navy Antarctic Developments Program, was a United States Navy operation organized by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, Jr., USN that sent 4,700 men, 13 ships, and 33 aircraft to establish the Antarctic research base Little America IV. This 543-page volume is the full account of the operation. At the time of this reproduction, per OCLC's WORLDCAT global library catalog, the original printed copies were available in only two libraries in the world, the Naval Postgraduate School Library in Monterey and the Canterbury University library in New Zealand. The story of the doomed polar expedition will appeal to fans of such outstanding writers as John Campbell, Charles Stross, Alastair Maclean, and Dan Simmons, who have all written exciting novels in similar settings. This completely factual account will also provide valuable ballast to credulous viewers of programs such as ANCIENT ALIENS and its fanciful stories of Nazi submarines and aliens in Antarctica.
