Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Healthcare workers must deal on a daily basis with the transportation, preparation, storage, clean up, and disposal of cytotoxic drugs, which are used in chemotherapy because of their harmful effect on cancer cells. These drugs also have harmful effects on good cells, and they therefore pose a significant health risk to those who work with them. Yet there is little safety and health information available about them, and what information is available is scattered across a vast array of literature. The Safety and Health Handbook for Cytotoxic Drugs collects this information so that healthcare workers can better understand the drugs they work with and the safety and health procedures that should be followed. In it, author Samuel J. Murff presents comprehensive technical and procedural information on 106 of the most common cytotoxic drugs. The book provides guidance on quickly dealing with spills, reducing unnecessary exposure, and complying with pertinent regulations and standards in order to better equip healthcare workers to maintain a safe work environment.

Book excerpt: Biological safety and biosecurity protocols are essential to the reputation and responsibility of every scientific institution, whether research, academic, or production. Every risk—no matter how small—must be considered, assessed, and properly mitigated. If the science isn't safe, it isn't good. Now in its fifth edition, Biological safety: Principles and Practices remains the most comprehensive biosafety reference. Led by editors Karen Byers and Dawn Wooley, a team of expert contributors have outlined the technical nuts and bolts of biosafety and biosecurity within these pages. This book presents the guiding principles of laboratory safety, including: the identification, assessment, and control of the broad variety of risks encountered in the lab; the production facility; and, the classroom. Specifically, Biological Safety covers protection and control elements—from biosafety level cabinets and personal protection systems to strategies and decontamination methods administrative concerns in biorisk management, including regulations, guidelines, and compliance various aspects of risk assessment covering bacterial pathogens, viral agents, mycotic agents, protozoa and helminths, gene transfer vectors, zooonotic agents, allergens, toxins, and molecular agents as well as decontamination, aerobiology, occupational medicine, and training A resource for biosafety professionals, instructors, and those who work with pathogenic agents in any capacity, Biological safety is also a critical reference for laboratory managers, and those responsible for managing biohazards in a range of settings, including basic and agricultural research, clinical laboratories, the vivarium, field study, insectories, and greenhouses.

Organized around the basic rubrics of industrial hygiene, this book helps students to think like industrial hygienists while offering the latest techniques for practicing professionals. Applications and Computational Elements of Industrial Hygiene is the most complete reference available on IH, and is also an ideal study aid for exam preparation. This is the first and only textbook that includes all critical computations for each concept covered. Each chapter discusses a different hazard and how to recognize, evaluate, and control it. The advantage of this approach is clear; technical issues, instrumental techniques, engineering control procedures ó relevant issues from A to Z ó are discussed for each hazard. Chapters conclude with case studies that offer critical insight into the practical aspects of the field. The book also covers emerging issues that will affect industrial hygienists in the future. The book includes real-life situations and experiences to demonstrate practical applications of concepts presented in the text. For students, Applications and Computational Elements of Industrial Hygiene offers critical material formerly scattered across multiple sources. For seasoned industrial hygienists, this is an essential problem-solving tool and state-of-the-art reference that consolidates and updates previously scattered information.

The book is organized in three sections. The first describes problems ranging from the failures of coordination, monitoring, and siting of school buildings to the hazards of exposure to toxic substances, including lead and PCBs. The second section captures the voices of activists seeking change and describes community and union organizing efforts to improve school conditions. The third section covers policy "solutions." The authors include academics, union staff and rank-and-file activists, parent organization leaders, and public health professionals.

This book was released on 2010-06-12 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Frederick, Maryland, is designed to handle pathogens that cause serious or potentially lethal diseases, which require the research performed on them be contained to specialized laboratories. In 2007 a decision was made to expand those facilities causing concern among area residents that public health and safety risks, and strategies to mitigate those concerns were not adequately considered in the decision to go forward with the expansion. In Evaluation of the Health and Safety Risks of the New USAMRIID High Containment Facilities at Fort Detrick, Maryland a group of experts in areas including biosafety, infectious diseases, industrial hygiene, environmental engineering, risk assessment and epidemiology, explored whether measures were being taken to ensure prevention and mitigation of risk to the health and safety of workers and the public. They also assessed whether the procedures and regulations employed meet accepted standards of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health. Evaluation of the Health and Safety Risks of the New USAMRIID High Containment Facilities at Fort Detrick, Maryland evaluates the health and safety aspects of the environmental impact statement developed to support the construction of the new laboratories and explores the institute's operating requirements, medical and emergency management response plans and communication and cooperation with the public. The book recommends that USAMRIID continue to set high standards for advancing security, operational, and biosurety measures, and that additional measures be taken to provide assurance that experienced medical professionals are readily available to consult on unusual infectious diseases. It also suggests that USAMRIID expand its two-way communications with the public.
