Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Journal of Physical Anthropology, 1919, Vol. 1 The establishment of a new scientific journal is a matter for serious consideration, and doubly so at this critical period. The points that must be thoroughly weighed are, first, the need of the additional publication; second, the effects of its establishment on existing periodi cals; and third, the Special service it can render under actual conditions. Every accident case or record of sudden death was scrutinized carefully and only those were selected as normal where no infection had supervened, and where no record was given of any pathological condition involving the spleen. Only 26 spleens of white men, 23 of negro men, 15 of white women and 7 of negro women were found that seemed to be normal. A list of these is given at the end with the available data and the relation of the spleen weight to stature. No spleen weights are included where the individuals were below the age of 22 years or above the age of 75 years and no spleen is included where the weight exceeds 250 grams. A table of the normal spleen weight follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1919, Vol. 158 Depending upon the locality, the etiological factors producing pneumonia may be expected to show variation. From experience in army base hospitals, two facts of importance have been rather universally recognized. The first fact refers to the general preva lence of the streptococcus (normally one of the hemolytic varieties) in pneumonia following measles. The second fact refers to the prevalence of the streptococcus, likewise one of the hemolytic varieties, as an organism associated in many localities with the pneumococcus in the production of epidemic pneumonia not pre ceded by measles or influenza, but as a distinct type in which the pneumococcus has appeared to play but a minor role. In certain localities, during the recent epidemic of influenzal pneumonia, the pneumococcus as the prevalent type of infection both in the acute disease and in the subsequent empyemas. In other localities the pneumococcus and streptococcus have been associated, while in others streptococcus pneumonias have been more frequently encountered than had been heretofore generally recognized. In the series of empyema here reported only those are included which required treatment by aspiration or operation. There were available for this report 35 empyema patients who recovered by repeated aspirations alone, while came to Operation. Those patients were not included who died within a few days of admission with an established diagnosis of empyema or those who died during the course of aspirations designed for their relief, but who, because of activity of the pneumonic process, acute bilateral empyema, purulent pericarditis, meningitis or other serious complications, were not considered reasonable operative risks. Because of the interest attached to variations of treatment, with increasing experience, these empyema patients have been grouped, depending largely upon three-time intervals, as follows' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Journal of Physiology, Vol. 41 The results as published may be summarized as follows: The observations of Keith Lucas (1) that skeletal muscle, in simple contraction, responds in determinate, discontinuous gradients to relatively continuous change of stimulus intensity, have been verified (2), Like discontinuity has been found to obtain under continuous change of tetanic stimulation( 2). The unit, or minimal entity, of function has been found by direct observation to be, as Lucas inferred, the individual fiber (3). The most conspicuous sign of fatigue in the locally excited muscle is successive abrupt elimination of individual fiber activity through rise of threshold (2). Conversely, the staircase effect is in similar case dependent to an appreciable extent upon accession to complete function of previously inactive fibers, through progressive fall of threshold (2). The methods employed, heretofore only generally described, have naturally been subject to improvement and accretion in the progress of further work, and a stage is now reached where the technical results justify a more detailed account. With improvement in technique the graphic output has assumed an increasingly convincing character. The tracings reproduced, although introductory to a number of separate problems, are here presented as cumulative evidence of the independence on the part of individual contractile values toward change of stimulus or threshold. Part I. Methods For The Graphic Recording Of Fiber Movement Principles of Method The combined devices for recording are indicated essentially in the diagram, figure 1. The uncurarized preparation lies in a bath of Ringers fluid. Upon the bared muscle surface impinges one end of a bent glass tube lying in a vertical plane parallel with the fibers. The interior of the tube, filled with Ringer's fluid, is continuous with the bath containing the preparation by means only of a terminal pore of less diameter than a single fiber. The other end of this active liquid electrode is led into a separate bath of Ringers fluid in which is inamersed the porous cup of an unpolarizable terminal. A similar terminal system is immersed at a convenient point in the solution bathing the preparation. The circuit is completed through a coil subject to alteration of position with respect to an appropriately varied magnetic field (primary coil or moving magnet). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Anthropologist, 1899, Vol. 1 Qualities arise out of the properties of bodies when they are considered in relation to human purposes. To understand this declaration it is necessary to consider the essentials of properties and qualities and carefully to note the distinction between them. The essentials Of the properties are unity, extension, speed, per sistence, and consciousness, which, under relations, give rise to properties that can be measured. These properties are number, space, motion, time, and judgment. Number is many in one, and the enumeration of the many is the measuring Of the number contained in the sum which is a unity. Number, therefore, is many in one. The second property is space; its essential is extension, but many extensions give rise to relative position, and the positions can be measured. Hence extension and position constitute space, and space is a property that can be measured. Speed is the essential Of motion, but the same particle in motion traverses a path. Motion, therefore, is speed and path. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
