Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Journal of Numismatics, Vol. 24: And Bulletin of American Numismatic and Archæological Societies; Quarterly By Act VII of 1836 the sikka and other coins with Persian legends passed away, and the present stamp of rupee, weighing 180 grains, of which 165 grains are pure silver, came into universal use throughout the country. From this point I need hardly say a more sordid, if not less absorbing, interest centres around coin-collecting, but one regarding which I fear I can offer no practical hints, though were I able to do so, my circle of readers would doubtless be considerably increased. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Journal of Numismatics, Vol. 41: And to the Proceedings of the American Numismatic Society, 1917 It is surprising that, while much has been written concerning the large and important coinage of the Seleucid sovereigns of Asia, we should still be at such a loss to assign the greater part of this coinage to the mints that were once so active in its production. To be sure, we can easily and correctly distinguish the issues of Sidon, Tyre, Berytos, and Ake Ptolemais but only because, from the reign of Alexander Balas on, these coins bear such obvious mint marks that they can not be misread. Some of the later issues of Tarsos and Mallos in Cilicia are also distinguishable. But since the appearance of Dr. George Macdonalds two illuminating monographs dealing with certain Seleucid coinages of Asia Minor, little advance has been made and the origin of the bulk of the Seleucid coinage is still an enigma. At first sight the vast material remaining seems to present almost insurmountable difficulties, but the inducements offered to students and historians to solve the problem are correspondingly many. The Seleucid coinage in particular is closely associated with, and therefore partakes of, the vicissitudes of the many rulers who issued it: its long and splendid line of living portraits - not only of the legitimate scions of the House of Seleucus but also of usurping regents and rebellious satraps such as Achaeus, Timarchus, Tryphon. and others - give it a vital and human interest that is not surpassed in Greek Numismatics. Its many mints and long existence give it a variety of types and of artistic style that is most attractive. While the time is certainly not yet ripe for a pretentious study of the Seleucid coinage as a whole (such as, for instance, has been done by Svoronos for the Ptolemaic series) much can be accomplished in sot-ting out the issues of various mints or in the intensive study of some one of these mints. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Journal of Numismatics, Vol. 51: With Index, by Author and Subject, Volumes 1-50 (1868-1916) And to the Proceedings of the American Numismatic Society, 1917 It is undoubtedly obvious that the most important and the longest lived of all the Seleucid mints was that of their capital Antioch. Curi ously enough no systematic study has yet been made of this mint under the Syrian Kings. If the probably prolific issues of this great commer cial and political centre, the heart as well as the head of the Seleucid Empire, could be picked out, gathered together, and studied, not only would a considerable advance be recorded in our knowledge of this particular field, but a long step would be taken towards solving the problems of the remaining mints. The following is an attempt in this direction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But this circumstance, instead of counting against our explanation, rather aids it, Since as we have already seen in the passage quoted from Callimachus, Britomartis concealed herself not only in the foliage Of oaks but also in the marshy meadows covered with other plants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Journal of Numismatics and Bulletin of American Numismatic and Archaeological Societies, Vol. 11: Quarterly; July, 1876-July, 1877 Every Saturday the workmen on this new city were paid in what was called black money. This consisted of brass and Copper coins, which had been manufactured to meet the necessity of the case, bearing on one side the arms of the Grand Master and of the Order, and on the other side the inscription, non zes sed fides. Each of these coins possessed a current value, and was held as a promissory note would be payable on demand as soon as ever the exchequer of the Order should be replenished and to the credit of La Vallette be it said, that as remittances arrived in the island from the continent, this spurious currency was gradually withdrawn, so that throughout the whole progress of the work public confidence was not for one moment shaken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Journal of Numismatics and Bulletin of American Numismatic and Archaeological Societies, Vol. 11: July 1876-July 1877 The name given to the new coins was as, which word comes from the Sanscrit ayas, and bears the signification of totality. Unity; the Romans used the word AS to designate any unity whatsoever. Considered as divisible; for instance, in order to designate the unity of weights, or the pound; and in numismatics. To designate the monetary unity. The great weight of these coins was a constant trouble in commercial transactions, and as Titus Livius says chariots were constantly required to carry relatively small sums. Then the Romans came to diminish the weight of the as, but without impairing its former value. This modification helped also the liquidation of the public debt. Many reductions in the weight of the AS took place in the history of the Roman Empire; at the introduction of the silver denarius, it had the value of ten ases, which soon rose to sixteen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Journal of Numismatics and Bulletin of American Numismatic and Archaeological Societies, Vol. 27: Quarterly; July, 1892-July, 1893 Upon the breaking out of the war of the Rebellion, all of the gold, silver, and copper money in circulation in the United States disappeared as if by magic, to the extent of many millions in comparatively a few days. The cause of this disappearance was due to the desire of the timid to save something of actual value from the threatened wreck of the Union, and on the part of the avaricious to hoard up that which was sure to have a large premium in the future. The notes of the State Banks then in circulation prevented any serious inconvenience, as regarded amounts from one dollar upward; but as the silver and copper coins struck by the Government were the only fractional currency in use, the inconvenience caused by its sudden disappearance can hardly be imagined at the present time. An illustration of the condition of affairs may be cited in the case of a house in New York which had so many copper cents stored in one of its rooms that the floor collapsed. A relief from this condition was needed promptly, and the first came from individual enterprise. Merchants issued promissory notes on small sizes of paper for amounts varying from one cent up, and redeemable in goods at their place of business. Metal tokens in brass, copper and various alloys, were also issued by merchants and manufacturers, in the form of advertisements, or bearing patriotic and other mottoes, and these readily passed for cents. Street-car tickets, milk tickets, and anything having an apparent value was pressed into service for making change.
