Book excerpt: Excerpt from American History It has been the aim of the authors of this book to give the main features in the development of our Nation, to explain the America of to-day, its civilization and its traditions. In order to do this, it was necessary to select topics from the various fields of human activity, the political, industrial, social, educational, and religious. Emphasis has been placed upon the fact that the position the United States occupies among the great nations is due primarily to the achievements of men and women in these fields. Consequently the military phases of our history, striking as some of them are, have in a measure been subordinated to the accounts of the victories of peace. We have thought it desirable also to give greater prominence than has been usual in school texts to the advance of the frontier and to the growth and influence of the West. Particular care has been taken to state the essential facts in European history necessary to the explanation of events in America. How may the subject be best presented to the pupils of high-school age has been constantly in mind. To that end, only trustworthy illustrative material has been included and the maps have been prepared with great care. While there is no separate chapter or section devoted to a discussion of the physical geography of America, it will be noted that the influence of geographical conditions has been constantly stated in connection with events and conditions mentioned in the volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of the Association of American Geographers, 1915, Vol. 5 Some historical writers are influenced little if at all by the study of the earth and lower life as elements of human environment. Even some volumes professing to deal with the geographic foundation Of history fail of their goal, and one preface affirms that the general physiography of North America is familiar enough to readers. This, I am sure, is quite too rosy a view of the geographic situation. But I cite the limitations of some histories in no mood of criticism. Let every man build the wall over against his own house. What of assured fact or proven principle we put before the historian he has neither the will nor the power to escape. Our light is in no danger of being put under a bushel. But we have good need to see that it is lighted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States of America: Preceded by a Narrative of the Discovery and Settlement of North America and of the Events Which Led to the Independence of the Thirteen English Colonies IT has seemed to me that the most desirable qualities in a text book history of the United States or, for that matter, in any history - are clearness, reasonableness, and attractiveness. I have tried to use terms which have only one meaning, to avoid involved sentences, and to state facts with precision. It is im possible in such a book to introduce no words which have not before come into the reading of an ordinary pupil; but tables of definition and pronunciation, at the head of each chapter, provide for the understanding of all novel words in the chap ter. The maps, in like manner, are kept free from confusing detail; and while they accompany and explain the text, they form a basis for that geographic treatment of history which is essential to a clear understanding of the physical conditions of human society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States Believing thoroughly that geography and history go hand in hand; indeed, that history is geography in motion, a large number of relief and surface maps have been inserted at appropriate places in the text. These maps, it is felt, will appeal at once to every teacher of history, as it is now accepted by all historians that places of settlement, growth of population, and even the issues of battles have been largely determined by the physical features of the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States of America: 1765-1865 The series is intended for the use of all persons anxious to understand the nature of existing political conditions. The roots of the present lie deep in the past, and the real significance of contemporary even ts cannot be grasped unless the historical ca uses which have led to them are known. The plan of the series will make it possible to treat the history of the last four centuries in considerable detail, and to embody the most important results of modern research. It is hoped therefore that the forthcoming volumes will be useful not only to beginners but to students who have already acquired some general knowledge of European His tory. For those who wish to carry their studies further, the bibliography appended to each volume will act as a guide to original sources of information and works more detailed and authoritative. Considerable attention will be paid to geography, and each volume will be furnished with such maps and plans as may be requisite for the illustration of the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harper's Atlas of American History, Selected From the American Nation Series: With Map Studies An atlas is, of course, primarily a work of reference. Yet an orderly ar rangement, as in a museum, may suggest the development of process or of life; and as a curator might carefully point out the illustrative value of such specimens and models, so here the editor has appended a short essay intended to suggest some ways in which the historical map may be of service. But he would be a sanguine teacher who expected students from these few reflections to realize for themselves the possibilities of an atlas. Consequently there is joined with it an extended course in the historical geography of the United States, in which the student, by observing these directions, works out on outline maps, easily procured, the record of a development in Space as well as in time, following the national history with his hand as well as his eye. The studies are closely integrated with the atlas, by specific reference, so that it will seldom be necessary to look beyond its pages for essential facts. In many cases, however, additional informa tion is included in the text, which the student is asked to transfer into graphic form. Citations to Professor Bassett's Short History of the United States, New York, 1913, and, for more elaborate treatment, to the American Nation Series, make the studies available as supplementary to a classroom course, or as a course in themselves, to be rounded out by lectures and library research. Naturally map studies may be cut to meet the individual requirements, and, indeed, the book is so arranged that the atlas may be used alone without reference to Part II. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical and Geographical Miscellany of the United States Fou many years I have taken pleasure in collecting fragments of information relating to the various peculiar features of United States History and Geography. Many of these facts, I believe, have never been in print. That the publication of these facts may be of special service and significance to the student and general reader, I have incorporated, by permission, considerable matter from other published works. In all such instances, I have drawn from absolutely reliable sources. It has been found practically impossible, within the scale of pages herein contained, to go into the details of every topic treated; and for this reason the reader is cited to authorities, Where he may find much of special interest for future reading.
