This book was released on 2015-11-22 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1775, Benedict Arnold and an army of 1100 set off into the Maine wilderness. Enduring floods, frostbite, desertion and starvation, they traversed over 300 miles of untraveled wilderness. While ultimately unsuccessful in their attack on Quebec City, Arnold and his men were lauded as "indefatigable" and "famine-proof" for their courageous feat. In 2013, author Sam Brakeley sets out to re-create their journey. While easily evading starvation and hypothermia, he discovers that the 21st century nevertheless brings its own set of challenges. Complete with aggressive land-owners, lascivious women and massive oil spills, we find that life on the river is always exhilarating. Combining 18th and 21st century adventures, Sam Brakeley vividly recreates Arnold's expedition to Quebec while telling his own modern-day saga. With humor, warmth and compassion, he reminds us that by connecting with the past we can more fully experience the present and future.

Download or read book Women in the American Revolution written by Sudie Doggett Wike and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without the support of American women, victory in the Revolutionary War would not have been possible. They followed the Continental Army, handling a range of jobs that were usually performed by men. On the orders of General Washington, some were hired as nurses for $2 per month and one full ration per day--disease was rampant and nurse mortality was high. A few served with artillery units or masqueraded as men to fight in the ranks. The author focuses on the many key roles women filled in the struggle for independence, from farming to making saltpeter to spying.

Book Synopsis African Americans and the Classics by : Margaret Malamud
Download or read book African Americans and the Classics written by Margaret Malamud and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new wave of research in black classicism has emerged in the 21st century that explores the role played by the classics in the larger cultural traditions of black America, Africa and the Caribbean. Addressing a gap in this scholarship, Margaret Malamud investigates why and how advocates for abolition and black civil rights (both black and white) deployed their knowledge of classical literature and history in their struggle for black liberty and equality in the United States. African Americans boldly staked their own claims to the classical world: they deployed texts, ideas and images of ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt in order to establish their authority in debates about slavery, race, politics and education. A central argument of this book is that knowledge and deployment of Classics was a powerful weapon and tool for resistance-as improbable as that might seem now-when wielded by black and white activists committed to the abolition of slavery and the end of the social and economic oppression of free blacks. The book significantly expands our understanding of both black history and classical reception in the United States.

Book excerpt: This Guide includes the primary and secondary works and summaries of plays of 15 prominent African American women playwrights including Lorraine Hansberry, Ntozake Shange, Adrienne Kennedy, Alice Childress, Zora Neale Hurston, Georgia Douglas Johnson. During the last 10 to 15 years, critical consideration of contemporary as well as earlier black women playwrights has blossomed. Plays by black women are increasingly anthologized and two recently published anthologies devote themselves solely to black women dramatists. In light of the growing interest in scholarship concerning African American women playwrights, researchers and librarians need a bibliographical source that brings together the profiles interviews, critical material and primary sources of black female playwrights. This guide will provide a bibliographical essay reviewing the scholarship of black women playwrights as well as for each playwright: a biography, summaries of each play detailed annotations of secondary material, and list of primary sources.
Book Synopsis SUMMARY - Hannibal And Me: What History’s Greatest Military Strategist Can Teach Us About Success And Failure By Andreas Kluth by : Shortcut Edition
Download or read book SUMMARY - Hannibal And Me: What History’s Greatest Military Strategist Can Teach Us About Success And Failure By Andreas Kluth written by Shortcut Edition and published by Shortcut Edition. This book was released on 2021-06-17 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Our summary is short, simple and pragmatic. It allows you to have the essential ideas of a big book in less than 30 minutes. As you read this summary, you will discover that you must be wary of the notion of success as well as the notion of failure. You will also discover : that your identity is built on very precise archetypes; that, during your youth, your definitions of success and failure are conditioned by the example of your parents; that accumulating experience rather than looking for quick success will allow you to assimilate values that will bring you more lasting success; that it is important to be bold and inventive, even after you have succeeded, and even as you get older; that defeat can be an opportunity to reinvent yourself more freely; that it is by transcending both triumph and disaster that you will truly flourish. In 218 BC, Hannibal and his army, after crossing the Alps, arrived in Italy. Over the next year, Hannibal triumphed over Roman armies one after the other, despite having fewer troops. The tactics he devised are legendary and are still studied in military schools today. After this series of overwhelming victories, it was clear to the Carthaginians, as to the Romans, that the war was coming to an end. Hannibal had demonstrated his superiority in battle, and was considered invincible: he personified success. However, while Hannibal remained in Italy for 14 years, and although he remained undefeated during that time, he never conquered Rome. Moreover, a few decades later, the Romans decided to avenge the affront by wiping Carthage off the map. The story of Hannibal Barca, who had devoted his life to the destruction of Rome, who wanted to avenge Carthage and bring it back to prosperity, is that of a bitter failure. How could such resounding triumphs lead to such a disaster? What lessons can we learn from this well-known figure in history? *Buy now the summary of this book for the modest price of a cup of coffee!
