That of the reproductive graphic arts as a whole remains to be told. There are such monographs as W. J. Linton's excellent and partly polemical record of American wood-engraving and Ripley Hitchcock's very useful volume on etching in the United States, both published in the eighties of the last century. There is, too, D. McN. Stauffer's alphabetical record of our engravers on copper, an invaluable book of reference. But the only connected and comprehensive account of American graphic art appeared, strange to say, in German. In the last decade of the nineteenth century, the Gesellschaft fur Vervielfalti-gende Kunst, of Vienna, issued its monumental four-volume work on "contemporary reproductive art," the history of the achievement of the nineteenth century. In this, the American section was covered by the late S. R. Koehler for etching and wood-engraving and by the present writer for lithography. The story is one worth telling in English. And it should be carried back to the early products of our art, of such a strong historical interest, and down to the most recent efforts at original expression, as we see them in the present revival of painter-etching, and in the individual adoption of the wood block and the lithographic stone as painter-media.
