Download or read book American Drawings and Watercolors in the Metropolitan Museum of Art written by Kevin J. Avery and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2002 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Metropolitan Museum began acquiring American drawings and watercolors in 1880, just ten years after its founding. Since then it has amassed more than 1,500 works executed by American artists during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in watercolor, pastel, chalk, ink, graphite, gouache, and charcoal. This volume documents the draftsmanship of more than 150 known artists before 1835 and that of about 60 unidentified artists of the period. It includes drawings and watercolors by such American masters as John Singleton Copley, John Trumbull, John Vanderlyn, Thomas Cole, Asher Brown Durand, George Inness, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Because the 504 works illustrate such a wide range of media, techniques, and styles, this publication is a veritable history of American drawing from the eighteenth through most of the nineteenth century."--Metropolitan Museum of Art website.

Book excerpt: The 2013 Carnegie International at Carnegie Museum of Art celebrates art as play, experimentation and dissonance, welcoming difference as an alternative to the standardization of cultural production. A major exhibition of new international art, the survey also encompasses an experimental playground project, a display and examination of the museum's permanent collection of postwar art, and a pioneering engagement with the city of Pittsburgh, putting the 2013 Carnegie International at the forefront of contemporary art and thinking. Organized by the curatorial team of Daniel Baumann, Dan Byers and Tina Kukielski, the catalogue provides rich background and lavish illustrations on each of the exhibition's components--including never-before-published pictures of projects and artworks--with an expanded artist section that features original interviews and in-depth texts on specific works by 35 artists from 19 countries in Asia, North America, South America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East: Ei Arakawa/Henning Bohl, Phyllida Barlow, Yael Bartana, Sadie Benning, Bidoun Library, Nicole Eisenman, Lara Favaretto, Vincent Fecteau, Rodney Graham, Guo Fengyi, Wade Guyton, Rokni Haerizadeh, He An, Amar Kanwar, Dinh Q. Book Synopsis Tarsila Do Amaral by : Stephanie D'Alessandro
Download or read book Tarsila Do Amaral written by Stephanie D'Alessandro and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the innovative, quintessentially Brazilian painter who merged modernism with the brilliant energy and culture of her homeland Tarsila do Amaral (1886-1973) was a central figure at the genesis of modern art in her native Brazil, and her influence reverberates throughout 20th- and 21st-century art. Although relatively little-known outside Latin America, her work deserves to be understood and admired by a wide contemporary audience. This publication establishes her rich background in European modernism, which included associations in Paris with artists Fernand Léger and Constantin Brancusi, dealer Ambroise Vollard, and poet Blaise Cendrars. Tarsila (as she is known affectionately in Brazil) synthesized avant-garde aesthetics with Brazilian subjects, creating stylized, exaggerated figures and landscapes inspired by her native country that were powerful emblems of the Brazilian modernist project known as Antropofagía. Featuring a selection of Tarsila's major paintings, this important volume conveys her vital role in the emerging modern-art scene of Brazil, the community of artists and writers (including poets Oswald de Andrade and Mário de Andrade) with whom she explored and developed a Brazilian modernism, and how she was subsequently embraced as a national cultural icon. At the same time, an analysis of Tarsila's legacy questions traditional perceptions of the 20th-century art world and asserts the significant role that Tarsila and others in Latin America had in shaping the global trajectory of modernism.
