The account we follow, places it in 1720, and states that the vessel, in consequence of hav ing the smallpox on board, was not allowed an entry in Boston. As 1721 was the year, when the smallpox committed the most formida ble ravages in Boston, having been brought in a vessel from the West Indies, it is not unlikely, that the party of Stark arrived in Boston Bay, while the panic produced by the ravages of the disease was at its height. At all events, they were refused permission to land in Boston; and they passed the winter on the banks of the Ken nebec in Maine, and near the spot where vviscas set was afterwards settled. The following year they removed to Nutfield, where thev had been preceded by the first emigrating company of their countrymen. Here a permanent and ﬂourishing settlement was founded, which took the name of Londonderry in 1722, in memory of the place 01 their abode in Ireland.
