At the Baltimore Catholic Congress, Henry F. Brownson, LL.D., said: The American system is also anti-protestant, and must either reject Protestantism, or be overthrown by it. At the dedication of the Roman Catholic Uni versity at Washington, Father Fidelis asserted: Either the Catholic Church is God's agency set in operation and maintained by Him for the salva tion of mankind, or else there is no hope from God. Protestantism has had its day, and is pass ing, as all human systems of philosophy or religion must surely pass. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Catholics and the Roman Question The following pages are an expansion of an article published by me on the same subject in the American Catholic Quarterly Review, January 1892. Certain qualified judges, whose desire was for me a command, having urged me to publish it separately, I felt it my duty to somewhat enlarge its scope and reinforce its argument. It is unnecessary to say that I have by no means either the intention or the pretension of exhausting such a subject in so few pages. I have proposed to myself primarily to Show clearly and frankly the Catholic point of View from which the Roman question should be regarded, indicating the principal considerations which should be taken into account in a true conception and solution of it, and thus to disengage it from those prejudices and ambiguities with which the best intentioned people sometimes surround it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fight With Rome As Abraham Lincoln said Sooner or later, the light of com mon sense will make it clear to every one that no liberty of con science can be granted to men who are sworn to obey a pope who pretends to have the right to put to death those who differ from him in religion. Sooner or later, the people will be forced to put a restrietion, to that clause of unlimited toleration toward a papist 9 I am for liberty of conscience in its truest, noblest, broadest and highest sense. But I cannot give liberty of conscience to the pope and his followers, the papists, so long as they tell me, through their councils, theologians and canon laws, that their conscience orders them to burn my wife and strangle my children and cut my throat when they find an Opportunity. (washington in the Lap of Rome, p. Nor can the American people afford to have the youth of the Roman Catholic church educated to believe that either the priest or the church can give them a warrant to trample on the ordinances of the land, or set at defiance the commandments written by God's finger on the tables of stone amid the thunderings and lightnings ofquaking Sinai. The American people must care for God's cause, uphold his honor and obey the teachings of his word, and then may be assured that they will share his protection and care. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vaticanism Unmasked: Or Romanism in the United States The papal church is a human institution which throws her sacerdotal robes over the whole civilized world. The Pope usurps the authority of Jesus Christ as the supreme head of the church militant on earth, and claims the right to rule the world in God's stead. This audacious claim is rigidly enforced in all parts of the world by military power, where the claim is disputed, and where there are bayonets enough to insure success, at the command of the vatican. In a Republic like this, diplomacy, strategy, intrigue and all manner of fraud and deception are used according to circum stances, until the civil power is under control, after which obedience to the supreme Pontiff is the law of the land. He usurps the prerogatives of both Christaud Caesar. This arrangement is quite convenient, inasmuch as there is but one source of authority, and nobody is in danger, by trans gressing Christ's command render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's. This is a logical sequence of papal supremacy and infallibility. Once established, one mind can rule the world from a single point to wit, the vatican at Rome. A syllabus ex-cathedra is better authority in the mind of a. Papist than a thus saith the Lord of the Bible. The Pope's bull of excommunication has more terrors in it than all the thunders of Sinai, and the penalties of God's broken laws. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Clement, Pope and Martyr, and His Basilica in Rome IN a vineyard about a mile from Rome, the foun dation walls of a large villa, the chambers of which are filled up with masses of stucco ornaments and coloured plaster, as indeed the whole soil with bits of Pompeian red, fragments of various and rare mar bles, mosaics, glass of so many colours that we won der at the profusion, pottery from the coarsest to the fine thin polished red clay, and, more rarely, seals, and gold ornaments, attest the mansion of a rich Pagan family. In a corner of the inclosure are ruined columbaria, probably for their depend ents, with broken cinerary urns still in their niches; and in another place a vast massive round monu ment of stone for the head of the house, who left to posterity a single sepulchral chamber in the cen tre. A white marble slab, still preserved, though detached from the building, gives us the title. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Urbs Et Orbis: Or the Pope as Bishop and as Pontiff IN The Vicar of Christ (london, Art and Book Company, my purpose was to set forth four truths - that Christ has on this earth a visible Kingdom - that in this Kingdom Christ not only reigns but rules - that Christ's rule, both in teaching and in government, is rendered actual by means Of that man, our fellow-man, whom Christ has made to be His Vicar on this earth, and that - if Christ had no visible Vicar here on earth, and throughout the centuries of time, Christ's royalty would be merely nominal, and not real. The purpose of the present volume is to set forth the Papacy in action, with some account of the machinery by means of which the Supreme Pontiff has governed and governs the visible Church.
