The sensational capture made by one of them of a part of Monte zama's treasure has already been referred to. In 1541 the Emperor had been greatly disturbed by Cartier's plan to colonize in Canada. It also includes a biographical introduction, based on French manuscript sources, which provides an account of Callieres' life as writer and diplomat, a discussion of the origin of the work and an assessment of the intellectual and historical background to which the treatise belongs.
