Book Synopsis Ameboid Movement (Classic Reprint) by : Asa A. Schaeffer
Download or read book Ameboid Movement (Classic Reprint) written by Asa A. Schaeffer and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ameboid Movement Although the subject of ameboid movement is discussed in this book chiefly because of its intrinsic interest, yet the interests of the student of medicine, the psychologist, the physiologist, the evolutionist and the general biologist have constantly been kept in mind. For the medical investigator probably finds no better means of approach to the study of the reactions and especially the movements of the white blood corpuscles, which play such an important part in the economy of the human body, than the ameba; white blood corpuscles and amebas are strikingly similar in many characteristics and in the fundamental processes of the movement they are probably identical. The comparative psychologist is keenly interested in the activities of the ameba because it exhibits to him the operation of the animal mind in its greatest simplicity. To the physiologist ameboid movement has for a long time represented the simplest phase of muscular contraction as it is known in the vertebrates. The philosophical evolutionist sees in the ameba, both in its structure and in its activities, a close approximation to the earliest ancestor of the animals. And the general biologist, aside from his usual interest in the properties of living matter wherever it may be found, is especially interested in discovering how many of the activities of the ameba are common to other organisms. But in addition to presenting an account of the main facts concerned in the movement of the ameba from the various points of view mentioned above, this book has a second object which is scarcely subsidiary to the main one. This second object is to present the thesis that moving organisms in which orienting organs are absent or not functioning, always move in orderly paths, i.e., in helical or true spiral paths. The movements of the ameba under controlled conditions, which, as the following pages will show, take the form of a helical spiral projected on a plane surface, therefore serve as an introductory study to the movements of organisms generally. Book Synopsis Advances in Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry V4 by : O Lowenstein
Download or read book Advances in Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry V4 written by O Lowenstein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry, Volume 4, presents five papers on the different aspects of comparative physiology. The first two studies deal with movement. The first examines the effects of environmental conditions on the motile behavior of amoebas. The second investigates the mechanisms and coordination of cellular movement. The third study on the endocrine functions of the hypothalamus in the fishes, amphibians, and reptiles provides the comparative endocrinologist with a basis for integrating the state of knowledge on non-mammalian and mammalian function of this organ complex. The fourth study deals with the central and peripheral control of arthropod movements. The final study surveys the comparative physiology of populations of gametes. Aside from providing readers with a comparative vista of reproductive physiology from a unique perspective, it introduces a new hypothesis on the overproduction of gametes commonly found in living organisms — a hypothesis which may have far-reaching consequences for the interpretation of the reproductive process.
Book Synopsis Primitive Motile Systems In Cell Biology by : Robert Aleen
Download or read book Primitive Motile Systems In Cell Biology written by Robert Aleen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primitive Motile Systems in Cell Biology is a collection of papers presented at the Symposium on the Mechanism of Cytoplasmic Streaming, Cell Movement, and the Saltatory Motion of Subcellular Particles, held at Princeton University in April 1963. The participants in the symposium represent various fields of science, brought together to consider how movement occurs at the cell level and below. This volume is organized into four sections encompassing 36 chapters and begins with an overview of cytoplasmic streaming in plants and Myxomycetes (Mycetozoa), including topics ranging from the organization of movement in slime mold Plasmodia to the mechanochemical system behind streaming in Physarum. The next section discusses cytoplasmic streaming and locomotion in the free-living amoeba, with chapters exploring relative motion in Amoeba proteus and mechanisms of amoeboid movement based on dynamic organization. This volume also discusses cytoplasmic streaming, locomotion, and behavior of specialized amoeboid cells. The book concludes with an analysis of non-Brownian and saltatory motion of subcellular particles, along with mitotic movements. This book is intended for scientists and students of the biological, biophysical, and medical sciences who are interested in the movements in and of living cells.
Book Synopsis Cilia, Ciliated Epithelium, and Ciliary Activity by : José A. Rivera
Download or read book Cilia, Ciliated Epithelium, and Ciliary Activity written by José A. Rivera and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cilia, Ciliated Epithelium, and Ciliary Activity reviews the state of knowledge of the activity of cilia and of the role these structures play in maintaining the normal physiology of the body, especially in the respiratory and genital systems. It relates the diversity of manifestations shown by cilia and ciliated epithelium in health and disease, and the effect of the physicochemical agents studied which influence the life and death of these structures. The volume is organized into five sections. Section A provides a general discussion on the history of studies on the ciliated epithelium; the distribution and morphology of cilia; development, regeneration and transformation of ciliated cells; and culture of cilia and ciliated epithelium. Section B deals with ciliary activity while Section C examines the effects of physical and chemical agents on cilia. Section D takes up the function of cilia. Section E contains a list of references of the literature on these topics from the historical beginning of studies in the field to the time of writing. This volume is intended to be a ready-made reference source for workers in the fields of biological sciences and medicine.
