Book excerpt: "The goal of this study is to explore the relationship between a parent-child acculturation gap and both depression and self-esteem in adolescent children of Mexican immigrant parents. Using linear regression models, I tested the impact of the acculturation gap on adolescent self-esteem, then on adolescent depression. Next, I used a mediation analysis to test the indirect impact of the acculturation gap on self-esteem and depression through intergenerational conflict. Further, I used a mediation analysis to test the effect of the acculturation gap on both self-esteem and depression through conflict and family cohesion simultaneously. Finally, I tested the same constructs in a moderated mediation analysis using the Griffen formula, which specifically measures relational ambivalence (the presence of both simultaneous positive and negative relationship characteristics). I then compared the results of all mediation analyses to determine which model accounted for the greatest variance in the two outcomes. Findings suggested that while the presence of intergenerational conflict significantly strengthened the impact of an intergenerational acculturation gap on depression, the addition of family cohesion-signaling ambivalence-was not more predictive of depression than conflict alone. On the other hand, results indicated that while conflict alone did not predict lower self-esteem in adolescents, the presence of ambivalence did have a significant negative impact on self-esteem."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: The relationships between adaptive and maladaptive aspects of gender roles in predicting substance use were examined in a sample of 955 (450 boys, 505 girls) Mexican American 7th and 8th grade adolescents participating in a school-based substance use intervention. The moderating effect of linguistic acculturation, the mediating effects of antisociality, depressive symptoms, and adaptive and avoidant coping on gender role-substance use relationships were examined. Correlational and path analyses supported the Functional Model of Gender Roles that considers these roles as adaptive or maladaptive social coping strategies. For boys, the path analyses yielded significant direct paths from aggressive masculinity to composite alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use measures, with all other effects of gender roles on substance use operating through the mediators. Bootstrapped mediation tests yielded significant indirect paths, where for boys the positive relationships between assertive and aggressive masculinity with substance use and the negative relationship of affective femininity with substance use were mediated through antisociality, which is predictive of increased substance use. For girls, the positive relationship between aggressive masculinity with cigarette and alcohol use and the negative relationship of affective femininity with alcohol and cigarette use were also mediated by adaptive coping, which is predictive of decreased substance use. A different set of significant indirect paths through avoidant coping connected assertive masculinity and submissive femininity to alcohol use for boys. For boys, the paths from affective femininity to antisociality and adaptive coping were found to be moderated by linguistic acculturation, with the negative correlation of affective femininity with antisociality and positive correlation of this gender role with adaptive coping being stronger in boys low in acculturation. In turn, the pathway from this acculturation by affective femininity interaction to substance use was found to be mediated by antisociality. The present analyses confirmed the importance of gender roles and their interaction with acculturation in predicting substance use in Mexican American adolescents. The analyses also were important in delineating functional mechanisms through which these gender roles have their effects, with implications for the design of interventions to reduce substance use in this population.

A summary of the research documented the effectiveness of using these therapies with the Mexican population. The literature review suggested that group counseling helps Mexican parents and adolescents to feel connected and understood and features their collectivist views as strengths that can also support their community. The 13-week group employs a variety of approaches to give parents and adolescents tools they can use outside of group therapy such as the interventions of finding connections with others, mutual empathy, active listening, storytelling, and expressive narrative arts that can help alleviate symptoms of mental illness. Integrative theories have shown that Mexican families can become more resilient and improve symptoms of depression, anxiety, and increase feelings of togetherness, self-esteem, and joy. Although research is needed, the benefits of the proposed group can include improving family acceptance, support, and increase of mental support.

The available literature indicates that a bicultural acculturation strategy and high levels of social support are associated with beneficial outcomes for both physical and mental health (Berry, 2005; Sarason & Sarason, 2009). Furthermore, social support from both the heritage and host cultures are associated with optimal development for Latin@s (Finch & Vega, 2003; Jasinskaja-Lahti et al., 2006). Discrimination, however, can directly affect both well-being and stress (Crockett et al., 2007). To date, the connections between these constructs have been examined generally, but the specific mechanisms throughout which this process occurs have not been fully explored. The present study will investigate the connection between social support, discrimination, well-being, and stress for individuals who endorse a bicultural acculturation strategy. More specifically, it will examine how certain types of support from identified cultural sources influence the positive outcomes that are often associated with the social support literature. A sample of 161 bicultural Mexican-American college students participated in the present study. Results indicated that Mexican/Mexican-American peer emotional and appraisal support had important positive implications for subjective well-being. Mexican/Mexican-American peer emotional support actually moderated the negative effects of discrimination on subjective well-being. European American peer informational support negatively impacted subjective well-being. Understanding how culture influences the connection between social support, well-being, and stress is important for informing prevention programs that can support academic and psychological success. Future directions and implications for bicultural college students are discussed.

Proposed mediational pathways included adolescent perceptions of mothers' and fathers' parenting practices, acculturative stress, self-esteem, academic support, and academic motivation. Participants included 116 9th and 10th grade students recruited from high schools and a parent for each student. Parents completed a measure of acculturation and rated their adolescents' psychological symptomology. Adolescents completed measures of perceived parenting (mother and father), a self-report of psychological symptoms, a measure of acculturation and acculturative stress, as well as ratings of academic support and motivation. Mediation analysis was utilized to identify mediators of family acculturation in relation to adolescent mental health and academic achievement. Results showed that adolescent self-esteem partially mediated the relationship between parent biculturalism and adolescent withdrawn behavior. Correlational findings identified positive relationships between parent and adolescent preference for American culture to be related to increased likelihood of academic achievement and self-esteem, and decreased internalizing and externalizing behaviors. These findings suggest that biculturalism (preference for both Hispanic and American culture) at the familial and individual level may serve as a protective buffer against adolescent mental health symptoms and poor academic performance. Findings are discussed in terms of preventive interventions for Hispanic youth.

Book excerpt: Recent reports have indicated that there are both mental health and educational disparities between Latino youth and their European American counterparts. Specifically, Latin youth are at a heightened risk for negative mental health outcomes in comparison to their non-Latino youth (e.g., Eaton et al., 2008). Further, 16.7% of Latino adolescents dropped out of high school compared to 5.3% of European American youth over the past several decades (1960-2011; U.S. Department of Education, 2013). Mexican American (M.A. youth in particular, have the lowest educational attainment among all Latino ethnic groups in the U.S. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010). While these mental health and educational disparities have often been attributed to discrimination experiences that Latino youth encounter, there is also consistent empirical evidence linking discrimination with these maladjustment problems. These studies confirmed that discrimination directly related to depressive symptoms (e.g., Umana-Taylor et al., 2007), externalizing behaviors (Berkel et al., 2010), self-esteem (e.g., Zeiders et al., 2013), and academic outcomes (e.g., Umana-Taylor et al., 2012). Few studies to date have examined the underlying mechanisms (i.e., moderation and mediation) that help us to better understand resiliency paths for those Latino youth that display positive adjustment outcomes despite being faced with similar discrimination encounters that their maladjusted peers face. Therefore, the following two studies examined various mechanisms in which discrimination related to adjustment to better understand potential risk and resiliency processes in hopes of informing intervention research. Paper 1 explored cultural influences on the association between discrimination, active coping, and mental health outcomes in M.A. youth. Paper 2 examined how trajectories of discrimination across 5th, 7th, and 10th grades related to cultural values, externalizing behaviors, and academic outcomes in M.A. youth. Taken together, these studies provide a culturally informed overview of adjustment processes in M.A. adolescents who face discrimination in addition to identifying critical directions for future research in efforts to gaining a more contextualized and comprehensive understanding of the dynamic processes involved in discrimination and adjustment in M.A. youth.

Book excerpt: Research has demonstrated a link between acculturation to the mainstream society and eating disorder behaviors among Mexican American women. The current study sought to identify mediators in the relationship between acculturation to the mainstream society and eating disorder behaviors, including internalization of sociocultural pressures of thinness and body dissatisfaction, to help inform research of the processes by which this relationship occurs. In the spirit of working from a strength-based framework, the study also sought to identify unique cultural variables that served as moderators in the relationship between acculturation to the mainstream society and internalization of sociocultural pressures of thinness. The study included a sample of 209 Mexican American women from Latino cultural organizations and Latino studies programs in universities across the U.S. Path analysis was conducted to test the overall model fit as well as specific hypothesized effects. Findings suggested that the model was not a goodfit to the data. In addition, results indicated that internalization did not mediate the association between acculturation and body dissatisfaction, whereas body dissatisfaction did mediate the association between internalization and both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Results also indicated that ethnic identity did not moderate the link between acculturation and internalization, while familism did moderate this link. Further, acculturation was not significantly related to anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, ethnic identity was significantly related to internalization, and familism was not significantly related to internalization. Findings are discussed in the context of multicultural research and theory as it relates to Mexican American women's lived experiences.

Book excerpt: In attempting to help the Mexican American adult and elderly population, the relationship between psychological well-being and cultural factors was investigated in this dissertation study. Primarily, the dynamics of acculturation and ethnic identity were considered as measures of cultural adjustment; while, physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions were used to measure well-being and mental health in adult and elderly cohorts. In regard to these relationships, the following research questions were addressed: 1) How does psychological well-being in older Mexican Americans relate to acculturation and ethnic identity? 2) Do these three variables interact differently among adult and elderly cohorts? 3) What is the relationship between the variables for this particular sample of Mexican Americans when considering moderating variables of spirituality and religiosity? In addressing the first two questions, multiple regression analyses were used to understand the distribution of the variance in the dependent variable, psychological wellbeing. Although both variables were contributing to the regression weight, neither of the two, acculturation or ethnic identity, were significant predictors of psychological well-being in this sample. In the last question, confirmatory and exploratory structural equation model (SEM) analyses were employed to determine how each of the variables were loading and relating to one another. Only a few of the items selected for these analyses, (i.e., none of the mediating variables, select acculturation items, and select scales on the measure for psychological well-being) were used and found to be significant in the complete model and diagram. Using newly clustered item parcels, the mediating variables of spirituality and religiosity were again analyzed in the (SEM) analysis. While the variable religiosity was dropped from the model diagram, the newly generated spirituality variable was found to be empirically and conceptually significant in the model diagram.
