Book Synopsis The History of Development by : Gilbert Rist
Download or read book The History of Development written by Gilbert Rist and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 2002-10 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With all its hopes of a more just and materially prosperous world, development has fascinated societies in both North and South. Looking at this collective fancy in retrospect, Gilbert Rist shows the underlying similarities of its various theories and strategies, and their shared inability to transform the world. He argues persuasively that development has always been a kind of collective delusion which in reality has simply promoted a widening of market relations despite the good intentions of its advocates.
Book Synopsis Globalization, Social Movements, and the New Internationalism by : Peter Waterman
Download or read book Globalization, Social Movements, and the New Internationalism written by Peter Waterman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a political climate where loose talk of a "third way" passes for political idealism, Waterman's passionate book examines the possibilities for a new style global solidarity suited to complex capitalist modernity. The author examines the past internationalism of Labour and socialists and the present one of radical-democratic social movements, discussing how the Left might build on this experience to recover a humanist and emancipatory tradition of internationalism, which would address our multiple global social problems.

Book Synopsis Globalization, Communication and Transnational Civil Society by : Sandra Braman
Download or read book Globalization, Communication and Transnational Civil Society written by Sandra Braman and published by Hampton Press (NJ). This book was released on 1996 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary theorising about globalisation processes has only recently come to acknowledge the crucial role of media systems, a theme long familiar to researchers within communications. Thus this volume situates media forms and processes as central foci of globalisation processes and gives communications researchers a chance to respond to the theories often devised by those without any intimate involvement in communications theory or practice. The responses are loud and varied. The first half of the book clusters theoretical critiques and embellishments of globalisation theory as well as offers some alternative theoretical models for examining current communications and cultural practices in the unfolding new world system. Considerable attention is paid to unpacking notions of a ""transnational public sphere"", ""global civil society"", and ""solidarity"", and examining the role that media play in structuring both potentially hegemonic practices as well as alternative practices. The second half clusters a variety of case studies exploring different facets of the dynamics of globalisation. Three chapters focus on specific media forms such as the examination of music, language, and news. A last chapter explores the notion of solidarity in a different way: how international organisations such as Amnesty can try to influence the news agenda to mobilise transnational public sympathy for an oppressed group, specifically street children in Brazil. The introduction and conclusion, each written by one of the editors, provide contextualisation and development of the debates, and focus on further issues for theoretical development and empirical research.
Book Synopsis German Northern Theater of Operations 1940-1945 [Illustrated Edition] by : Earl Ziemke
Download or read book German Northern Theater of Operations 1940-1945 [Illustrated Edition] written by Earl Ziemke and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Includes 23 maps and 31 illustrations] This volume describes two campaigns that the Germans conducted in their Northern Theater of Operations. The first they launched, on 9 April 1940, against Denmark and Norway. The second they conducted out of Finland in partnership with the Finns against the Soviet Union. The latter campaign began on 22 June 1941 and ended in the winter of 1944-45 after the Finnish Government had sued for peace. The scene of these campaigns by the end of 1941 stretched from the North Sea to the Arctic Ocean and from Bergen on the west coast of Norway, to Petrozavodsk, the former capital of the Karelo-Finnish Soviet Socialist Republic. It faced east into the Soviet Union on a 700-mile-long front, and west on a 1,300-mile sea frontier. Hitler regarded this theater as the keystone of his empire, and, after 1941, maintained in it two armies totaling over a half million men. In spite of its vast area and the effort and worry which Hitler lavished on it, the Northern Theater throughout most of the war constituted something of a military backwater. The major operations which took place in the theater were overshadowed by events on other fronts, and public attention focused on the theaters in which the strategically decisive operations were expected to take place. Remoteness, German security measures, and the Russians’ well-known penchant for secrecy combined to keep information concerning the Northern Theater down to a mere trickle, much of that inaccurate. Since the war, through official and private publications, a great deal more has become known. The present volume is based in the main on the greatest remaining source of unexploited information, the captured German military and naval records. In addition a number of the participants on the German side have very generously contributed from their personal knowledge and experience.
