Book excerpt: Seafarer Marlin Bree captures the poetry of the seagull’s flight, the majesty of its soaring wings, and its amusing antics as gulls gregariously interact with humans. Through black-and-white digital stop-sequence photography, this tribute introduces their habits and habitats, their special abilities, and their remarkable intelligence. Via detailed drawings and illustrations, Bree examines the gulls’ “wings of wonder” and how they achieve their amazing sense of air, control their soaring and hovering, and remain aloft over great distances. The work also recounts fascinating legends that have sprung up over the years about gulls and their mystical symbolism in life and death, as well as lighthearted stories, such as that of Sam, a gull who walks into a seafront store and picks up the same brand bag of chips day after day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eagerly awaited guide offers the most comprehensive treatment ever published on the gulls of Europe, Asia and North America. A total of 43 species is treated, and every species is described in considerable detail, with a full description of each plumage and racial variation. Gulls are intelligent, versatile, opportunistic, and ecological generalists. As such, they exploit a variety of habitats, both coastal and inland, take a wide range of food, and are often extremely abundant. They are also great wanderers, with several American species regularly appearing in Western Europe and vice versa. As well as identification criteria, this book includes an up-to-date assessment of the range and status of every species, together with information on patterns of vagrancy. This important guide is published at a critical time in the development of dull taxonomy. The large, white-headed forms occurring in the region comprise a superspecies complex, with the precise relationships between the various components still under considerable debate. A thorough illustrative and textual treatment of the group is much needed, and this book provided the most complete overview of the complex. The text is complemented not only by superb colour paintings by Hans Larrson, but also by a large selection of colour photographs, sourced from some of the finest bird photographers in the world. This is the essential reference to a fascinating and endlessly challenging group of birds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roxanne Schinas has always had a passion for wildlife. Long before she was old enough to read of Gerald Durrell's adventures she was emulating them, with pets ranging from rabbits and half-tame hedgehogs to toads, sticklebacks, locusts, and a crayfish. In the spring of 2008, while her family were cruising in southern Spain, Roxanne decided to make a survey of the seagull colony on an uninhabited island. The project began with a hand-drawn map on which the nests were plotted. Phase two was to have consisted in the study of the young birds growing up on the island, but when a local nature warden told her that most of the chicks would die, Roxanne found that she had a perfect excuse for "rescuing" two and bringing them home. Mother was not impressed... but the deed was done, and now the young naturalist had the opportunity to study, intimately, the development of Larus Cachinanns, the yellow-legged gull. Two Gulls and a Girl is Roxanne's record of events in the seagull colony and amongst her two hand-reared birds. Contains 92 black-and-white photos and illustrations. Foreword by Richard Williamson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A state-of-the-art photographic field guide to the world's oceanic birds Oceanic birds are among the most remarkable but least known of all birds, living at sea, far from the sight of most people. They offer unusual identification challenges—many species look similar and it can be difficult to get good views of fast-flying birds from a moving boat. The first field guide to the world's oceanic birds in more than two decades, this exciting and authoritative book draws on decades of firsthand experience on the open seas. It features clear text filled with original insights and new information and more than 2,200 carefully chosen color images that bring the ocean and its remarkable winged inhabitants to life. Never before have oceanic birds been presented in such an accessible and comprehensive way. The introduction discusses the many recent developments in seabird taxonomy, which are incorporated into the species accounts, and these accounts are arranged into groups that aid field identification. Each group and species complex has an introductory overview of its identification challenges, illustrated with clear comparative photos. The text describes flight manner, plumage variation related to age and molt, seasonal occurrence patterns, migration routes, and many other features. The result is an indispensable guide for exploring birding's last great frontier. A comprehensive, authoritative, and accessible guide to oceanic birds Covers more than 270 species Includes more than 2,200 color photos with concise captions noting key features Features careful species comparisons, overviews of the latest taxonomy, tips on how to observe and ID birds at sea, and much more

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are not afraid to say that we are fascinated by birds. Flying birds always provoke human admiration. There is this unexplained mysterious feeling that surrounds us when watching birds on the forest trees, in our backyard, at the ocean, sea, or lake. Birds are an infinite treasure of inspiration for humans, waking us up in the morning with beautiful birdsongs. Their little brain is of a size of an unshelled walnut and is associated with intelligent behavior and the same capabilities of humans and apes’ mental tasks. When you think about all the animals in the world, you quickly realize that birds are, in fact, among some of the most intelligent creatures we have on earth. Although there are more than ten thousand bird species worldwide, only a handful of them have made the list for the extremely talented and incredibly intelligent. So who are these super intelligent feathered friends? It is difficult to pick one. Perhaps kea, ravens, and crows are equally smart; while macaws, cockatoo, and jays are on the top of any list too. Who knew that an African gray is capable of working out the location of hidden food by using the kind of deduction and elimination skills previously seen only in humans and apes? And as you probably have heard, they are exceptional talkers! Today, we all know that it is bad to imprison birds in cages, but it was not always the case throughout the history. According to Stephen King, “Some birds are not meant to be caged, that’s all. Their feathers are too bright, their songs too sweet and wild.” Due to beautiful poetry and cultural expressions, the flying bird became a symbol of freedom and independence. There are cases of historic acknowledgment of birdcages, especially in the Victorian era. People were listening to birdsongs in cages as it was their radio entertainment outlet. During wartimes, birds demonstrated their unique abilities in courageous heroic efforts to help humans in transferring information through the battlefields. The birds and birdcages both have a longtime history. Our love for the amazing earth creatures makes us stand out for their protection and safety to enjoy our shared inhabitants on the planet, and as for the birdcages, people find them pretty appealing in various ways of the aesthetic repurposing.

Book excerpt: Bold Sea Stories 2 is a new book from an award-winning marine journalist who shares the best boating, sailing, and adventure stories from his long career. Most of Marlin Bree's collection of 26 real-life tales are set on the world's largest freshwater sea, Lake Superior. With 60 photos, illustrations, and charts, the author takes readers to fascinating corners of the Sweetwater Sea and elsewhere to plunge them into adventure, exploration, and (mostly) triumph. In one chapter, a solo sailor crossing the North Atlantic in his 10-foot plywood sailboat is overtaken by a deadly storm, while in another tale, a "down home" crew in an ordinary sailboats attempts a first crossing of the iceberg-guarded Northwest Passage. From Bold Sea Stories 2's pages arise inspiring tales of bold sea captains and brave seamen---and of course, high seas, wild storms, and shipwrecks. These are authentic accounts of extraordinary voyages, single-handed sailing feats, and great boats---some doomed forever to rest beneath the waves. Bree's recurring themes are the why's of sailing---love of wilderness, the joy of boating, the magic of discovering and (almost always) mastering the unknown, and the search for peace on the water. Published by Marlor Press, Bold Sea Stories 3 is the second in Bree's Bold Sea Stories series.
