Book excerpt: This curriculum was developed to help people who want to help fathers and expectant fathers achieve success. . The history of involving male teachers to help primarily young urban men who are about to become fathers had consisted of good-hearted upper middle class Christian men giving a lecture about what it means to be a father. The success of the program had been dismal as participants frequently reported that the instructors told too many personal stories, preached concepts they did not understand, and were too out of touch with their generation and their personal cultures. In response to this problem, we set out to develop a tool to give good-hearted upper middle class Christian men that would help them find success in their efforts to help young fathers learn what it means to be a father. This curriculum is meant to be an easy tool for helping volunteers and paraprofessionals be effective in educating fathers and expectant fathers to: 1)Discuss what manhood in our culture means; 2)Discover their powerful role in positive child outcomes for children; 3) Uncover common road blocks good fathers have in being successful fathers; 4)Learn how their fatherhood role is impacted by their experience of their father and father figures; 5) Understand how to handle challenges in relationship with their child's mom; 6) Identify common internal road blocks within men to fulfilling their important fatherhood role. The curriculum has been developed to work in a 2 hour training class for expectant and new fathers. However, if taken slowly, it could be taught in multiple sessions over time or in an expanded time frame. The curriculum is purposefully written in simple language for full participation across cultures. It is developed with the intention of having one two hour session because that is the model of the program for which it was developed. For that reason, the education materials are not comprehensive on the covered subject matter, but rather built for the purpose of giving a brief overview of the subjects covered. In our experience, repetition of the material has been helpful for participants to grasp in greater detail the concepts presented. Our intention is that this curriculum will be easily administered in a low tech or high tech environment, with or without use of program video and slides. We encourage facilitators to become familiar with the all aspects of the curriculum so that fathers and expectant fathers who attend the class will receive the content of the program even if there are problems with electronic equipment. It is our intention to not be overly religious with the material. Although the principles taught in this class have firm biblical basis, this curriculum is developed intentionally to serve people of all faiths and no faith. It is our intention to impact the next generation by impacting new and young fathers. We trust that the facilitators of this curriculum (within the policies of the organization or ministry within which they are providing services) will follow up with fathers interested in learning more about a relationship with God or more about what it means to be a father.

New Research on Parenting Programs for Low-Income Fathers includes research on how to engage mothers to support father–child contact and to successfully employ social media and online technology for practice. It offers findings on how to increase paternal engagement and parenting skills and to include fathers in policies and programs for children and families. It discusses the importance of providing staff training and resources to practitioners who work directly with fathers. Chapters also provide summaries of key implications for evidence-based practice and future directions for research that encourage effective fatherhood practice. This book is an excellent resource for therapists, social workers, fatherhood educators, fatherhood practitioners, researchers, and policy makers on how to inspire positive father engagement with children and healthy coparenting relationships.

Book excerpt: If the family unit is a fundamental building block of society, the nucleus of that unit is the father, and when he causes damage, the ripples affect everyone. Drawing from decades of first-hand experience and a wealth of academic research, this book delves into the depths of the catastrophe that is fatherlessness, laying it open from an academic and personal perspective, and presenting a thorough, practical solution. The book captures the core of The World Needs A Father's Master Trainer course in a format that is easy to access and digest, but it is also an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to be a better husband, father or mentor. It will challenge you, convict you, and encourage you to be the best father you can be within your context. While it is rooted in Christian ethics and values, the truth and practical value that it expresses is just as relevant to people of a secular inclination, adherents to other faiths, or those who subscribe to no particular faith at all. This version has been updated and expanded to include new research, provide deeper insights, and includes more practical tool to help you bring heaven home.

Book excerpt: This highly anticipated third edition of the Handbook of Parenting brings together an array of field-leading experts who have worked in different ways toward understanding the many diverse aspects of parenting. Contributors to the Handbook look to the most recent research and thinking to shed light on topics every parent, professional, and policymaker wonders about. Parenting is a perennially "hot" topic. After all, everyone who has ever lived has been parented, and the vast majority of people become parents themselves. No wonder bookstores house shelves of "how-to" parenting books, and magazine racks in pharmacies and airports overflow with periodicals that feature parenting advice. However, almost none of these is evidence-based. The Handbook of Parenting is. Period. Each chapter has been written to be read and absorbed in a single sitting, and includes historical considerations of the topic, a discussion of central issues and theory, a review of classical and modern research, and forecasts of future directions of theory and research. Together, the five volumes in the Handbook cover Children and Parenting, the Biology and Ecology of Parenting, Being and Becoming a Parent, Social Conditions and Applied Parenting, and the Practice of Parenting. Volume 4, Social Conditions and Applied Parenting, describes socially defined groups of parents and social conditions that promote variation in parenting. The chapters in Part I, on Social and Cultural Conditions of Parenting, start with a relational developmental systems perspective on parenting and move to considerations of ethnic and minority parenting among Latino and Latin Americans, African Americans, Asians and Asian Americans, Indigenous parents, and immigrant parents. The section concludes with considerations of disabilities, employment, and poverty on parenting. Parents are ordinarily the most consistent and caring people in children’s lives. However, parenting does not always go right or well. Information, education, and support programs can remedy potential ills. The chapters in Part II, on Applied Issues in Parenting, begin with how parenting is measured and follow with examinations of maternal deprivation, attachment, and acceptance/rejection in parenting. Serious challenges to parenting—some common, such as stress and depression, and some less common, such as substance abuse, psychopathology, maltreatment, and incarceration—are addressed as are parenting interventions intended to redress these trials.
