It is a stimulus to the advancement of naval architecture such as is necessary in maintaining the naval and merchant fleets at the highest standard; it is a training school for seamen, both amateur and professional; and its mimic battles for the different international trophies - that first awakened and now keep alive a thoroughly national interest in maritime supremacy are constant reminders of the necessity for perpetual progress in all details of naval development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yachts and Yachting It was not until February had waned, and March had come that his heart went strongly back to his old love over there in the boat-yard, and his steps turned toward her. The approach to the yard was muddy; snow and ice still lingered, and was there mingled with mud. Rubber boots were as yet in the locker, with old trousers, soiled and well-beloved sweaters, ancient and respected hats, and other gear that made life on the boat one of serene and unfashionable pleasure. Without these appurtenances an inspection of the boat could not be complete; it could not be intimate; but there was assurance she had wintered well, from the friendly old yard - master, bearded and wrinkled, past fourscore and still loving a boat as when a lad; and, this, with the Spring air, and a casual look at the old boat under her Winter coverlet, was enough to rouse a feeling to which there is no fellow in the heart of man, - the spur to independent action, the lust of roving, the desire to be free of everybody on shore, and, with started sheets, to sail away out of the city's harbor to some snug and private cove of his own among the rocks beyond the headland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Amateur Yachting The writer hopes this little book will be of interest not only to those who intend to indulge in the healthy, exhilarating sport of yachting but also to those who would like to gain a knowledge of the principles of sailing, through the interest created by the international yacht races. The directions for sailing and managing a cabin yacht are for beginners, and, as far as possible, such plain words have been used as will enable embryo yachtsmen to follow the directions without confusion, while a short dictionary of technical words has also been added for convenience. Yachting, besides being beneficial to health, develops the judgment, schools a man into acting promptly in cases of emergency, and increases his self-reliance. It is of benefit not only to the individual, but also to the community. The National Guard, is useful as a school for drilling our citizens into a body of soldiery, so that in the event of disturbances in our own country or of war with foreign countries we would be able to present a large body of well drilled men without having in the meantime to support an expensive standing army. A Story of an International Yacht Race Early in the month of November, 1694, great interest was aroused among the American people by the announcement published in the newspapers that an English sportsman had decided to issue a challenge for a contest to decide the ownership of the great international yachting trophy. Details were lacking, but sufficient information had been forthcoming to indicate that a determined effort was to be made by the Englishman to recover the coveted cup. Time and again had attempts been made to win back the emblem, symbolical of supremacy in the sport of yachting, which had been brought to America years before by a boat whose name had been thereafter indissolubly connected with it. Each time the Englishmen had sent over their best boat, manned and captained by their most experienced sailors. Each time they had been met and defeated by a superior boat manned and captained by better sailors. Each defeat had apparently only added to the intensity of the desire to recover their lost prestige, until at the time this latest attempt became known to the public there was not a man, woman or child in the tight little isle who did not consider himself or herself to have a direct personal interest in the success of the enterprise. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Golden Age of Yachting presents a panoramic view of yachting, providing an insightful introduction to the pleasures, craft, and history of the sport, with emphasis on the era of the great steam yachts. It is a meticulous account based on accurate knowledge and detailed research. Most yachting histories have been so much influenced by the nationality of the author that the British and American versions are quite different, but L. Francis Herreshoff was equally familiar with both sides. He has given a much more factual account of the international races than can be found in other writings. This book will appeal to the large group of amateur and professional seamen who strive to keep alive the traditions and lore of sail. The book was first published by Sheridan House in 1963 under the title An Introduction to Yachting and reprinted in 1980. The title of this new paperback edition, The Golden Age of Yachting, more accurately reflects the treasures found in this magnificent volume.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of Sea Terms: For the Use of Yachtsmen, Amateur Boatmen, and Beginners I am anxious to make it clear that this little Dictionary is intended as a help to beginners. I do not profess to teach those who may be already experienced in yachting and the art of boat-sailing, and still less those acquainted with the sea. For these there are various nautical dictionaries; but so far as I am aware, there is no such work exclusively devoted to those who start in entire ignorance of their subject; and to supply this apparent want the present work is an attempt. Such a work presents some difficulties, and is, therefore, naturally open to criticism. Nautical terms are essentially technical; many are used in various senses, while sometimes several may have but one meaning. And besides these we have a list of expressions which, while they cannot be regarded as sea terms, have direct reference to boat-building and boat-sailing. It is to be feared, too, that some of those phrases now commonly met with in the sporting journals may have been overlooked. Numerous as are the terms in daily use among seafaring men, their number has been considerably enlarged of late years, not only in consequence of recent improvements in yacht-building, which require new names for parts and fittings hitherto unknown, but chiefly in consequence of that tendency in a certain class of sporting scriveners so to expand the technicality and the volubility of their nautical language that it has been found impossible to keep pace with them. True maritime terms may generally be traced back to very simple derivations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Yachts and Yacht Handling But this method of handling a subject is apt to breed dogmatism, especially as the reader is unable to question or deny the statements made until they have been chilled into ink. So you will find in many of my chapters that Iam exceedingly dogmatic. It IS un1ntentional, simply being a manifestation of the spirit peculiar to this style of addressmg an audience - one that must hear but cannot answer. Therefore let me warn you to question all my statements, and to accept only those that harmonize with your own conclusions, after you have carefully thought them over. Those that you cannot reconcile to your own knowledge and experience, lay on one side to be tried out at a future day.
