Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This teacher's guide includes information to help synthesize "Amarigna & Tigrigna Qal Hieroglyphs for Beginners" with Bloom's Taxonomy in the classroom, a pronunciation key for many common hieroglyphs, and classroom games and activities. Background:There are several current trends in social studies education. Among them are multicultural education, and the value of using phenomena similar to the learners' life and/or society to enhance and stimulate learning and motivation. These two trends are often mutually supportive and complimentary, as they are in the present case of the AIOS Amarigna & Tigrigna Qal Hieroglyphs for Beginners curriculum. In 1994, the AIOS National School Program curriculum was endorsed by the Black Education Commission of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the second largest school district in the United States. In reference to multicultural education the AIOS Amarigna & Tigrigna Qal Hieroglyphs for Beginners curriculum serves to expand the learners view of the ancient society and people of Ancient Gebts. Gebts is the ancient name of Egypt and the name Ethiopians and Eritreans continue to refer to Egypt by. Much has been written regarding the effect of mass communication and electronic media in narrowing the world community into a global village. In this context, the AIOS Amarigna & Tigrigna Qal Hieroglyphs for Beginners curriculum gives depth and meaning to the media images and provides positive examples of the functioning of ancient African societies. The latter factor doubly is important because the AIOS Amarigna & Tigrigna Qal Hieroglyphs for Beginners curriculum counteracts the often-negative stereotypes of Africa and its people, and serves as an instrument in enhancing the important cognitive functions, as defined in Benjamin Bloom's Taxonomy Of Educational Objectives: Cognitive Domain. The Curriculum provides students the opportunity to compare and contrast the ancient society of Egypt, observe the similarities and differences, and facilitates the development of systematic thinking in the student (see appendix I, for summary of Bloom's Taxonomy).A second factor of importance is the potential of the curriculum as a motivational instrument, which will enhance positive and productive learning behavior by the Africa-descended student, including African-American students. Also, it is important for students from other ethnic groups to become aware of ancient African cultures and people, such as this curriculum provides. American educators have generally accepted the importance and need for multicultural education as a means of addressing the problems of alienation and hostility, which exist between ethnic groups in America. There are numerous possibilities of synthesizing the AIOS Amarigna & Tigrigna Qal Hieroglyphs for Beginners curriculum with Bloom's Taxonomy. However because of time limitations, this brief introduction presents a mini-module of instructional plans as an example of how a synthesis of Bloom's Taxonomy and the AIOS Amarigna & Tigrigna Qal Hieroglyphs for Beginners curriculum might be developed. This teacher's guide includes information to help synthesize "Amarigna & Tigrigna Qal Hieroglyphs for Beginners" with Bloom's Taxonomy in the classroom, a pronunciation key for many common hieroglyphs, and classroom games and activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study addresses the dating of Middle Egyptian literary texts from the perspective that has merited the least attention so far, language. General discussions concern aspects of the linguistic situation in early/mid-second millennium BCE Egypt, the nature of the record in which the primary linguistic description is necessarily carried out, processes of textual alteration in the course of transmission, and the configurations of Middle Egyptian in literature. In the case of Middle Egyptian literary texts, the major strategy for dating consists in studying phenomena of written innovation and obsolescence in relevant registers in order to define upper and lower temporal bounds for a composition to be dated. In a complementary approach, not indexed on linguistic change, distinctive linguistic repertoires and phenomena of linguistic re-composition are directly targeted. Implications that spring from the proposed datings are outlined with a view on how these could affect the discussion of the cultural functions and of the historical development of Middle Egyptian literature. Beyond dating, the book is more broadly a study of the language of Middle Egyptian literature, of differences internal to this tradition, and of how it productively relates to other written discourses on linguistic levels as much as on semantic ones.

Book excerpt: Mons Porphyrites, in the heart of the Red Sea mountains which dominate the Eastern Desert of Egypt, was the only source of imperial porphyry known to the ancient world. The quarries seem to have been worked from the Tiberian period until the early fifth century AD. A five-year programme of investigation of the quarries was undertaken between 1994 and 1998 and the first volume on the topography of the area appeared in 2001 (EES Excavation Memoir 67 by V. A. Maxfield and D. S. Peacock). This second volume includes reports of the excavations and provides a review of the overall development of the quarry complex.

The New & Revised Edition published by the Lion of Judah Society (LOJS) contains additional commentary and illustrations, along Publisher's notes by Ras Iadonis Tafari. The book explores the historical contacts between Egypt and Israel, especially the influence of Egypt on the religion of Israel, i.e. language, literature; arts and crafts. Moses, the Lawgiver, was educated in Egypt and "was learned in all the wisdoms of the Egyptians." Moses possessed an excellent knowledge of the Egyptian Religion. Wallis Budge says "the depth of his knowledge of Egyptian magico-religious ritual is proved by the closeness with which he followed it in constructing the Tabernacle, and in the regulations which he drew up concerning offerings, the equipment of the Tabernacle and the official dress of the priests."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first, complete English translation of the ancient Egyptian Netherworld Books The ancient Egyptian Netherworld Books, important compositions that decorated the New Kingdom royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, present humanity's oldest surviving attempts to provide a scientific map of the unseen realms beyond the visible cosmos and contain imagery and annotations that represent ancient Egyptian speculation (essentially philosophical and theological) about the events of the solar journey through the twelve hours of the night. The Netherworld Books describe one of the central mysteries of Egyptian religious belief—the union of the solar god Re with the underworldly god Osiris—and provide information on aspects of Egyptian theology and cosmography not present in the now more widely read Book of the Dead. Numerous illustrations provide overview images and individual scenes from each Netherworld Book, emphasizing the unity of text and image within the compositions. The major texts translated include the Book of Adoring Re in the West (the Litany of Re), the Book of the Hidden Chamber (Amduat), the Book of Gates, the Book of Caverns, the Books of the Creation of the Solar Disk, and the Books of the Solar-Osirian Unity. Features: Accessible presentations of the main concepts of the Netherworld Books and the chief features of each text Notes and commentary address major theological themes within the texts as well as lexicographic and/or grammatical issues An overview of later uses of these compositions during the first millennium BCE
