Book excerpt: This book contains several short stories about the simple, innocent romance between a boy and a girl that reflects a much simpler time. A time when just holding hands and giving that certain boy or girl a special look gave you huge butterflies in your stomach and that breathless feeling of excitement and wonderment of, "Does he like me? I mean REALLY like me?" or "Man I hope that look means she likes me, a lot!" These stories are about a young man not afraid to stand up for his lady and willing to risk his own safety to rescue her. I believe a "real" man is NOT afraid to cry and in my stories when someone's heart is breaking he is not afraid to show his true feelings. So grab the tissues, find a comfortable place to sit, pick up this book and be prepared to get lost in a world of good, old fashioned romance. Happy reading!

Book excerpt: Many female journalists came to the fore during the first and second world wars, and their perspective was very different to that of their male peers, who were reporting from the field. Specifically, they often wrote about war from the perspective of those left at home, struggling to keep the household afloat. And with 'How it feels to be forcibly fed' (1914) by Djuna Barnes, one of the world's very first experiential, or 'gonzo' journalists, came a new age of reporting. Since then, women have continued to break new ground in newspapers and magazines, redefining the world as we see it. Many of the pieces here feel almost unsettlingly relevant today -- the conclusions Emma 'Red' Goldman drew in her 1916 'The social aspects of birth control', Maddy Vegtel's 1930s article about becoming pregnant at 40, Eleanor Roosevelt's call for greater tolerance after America's race riots in 1943. Many have pushed other limits: Naomi Wolf's Beauty Myth brought feminism to a new generation; Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones caused a media revolution; Ruth Picardie's unflinchingly honest column about living with cancer in 1997 brought a wave of British candour and a host of imitators; and when two iconic women come face to face, we have at one end Dorothy Parker on Isadora Duncan (1928) and at the other Julie Burchill on Margaret Thatcher (2004). This collection of superlative writing, selected by the Sunday Times's most senior female editor, brings together the most influential, incisive, controversial, affecting and entertaining pieces of journalism by the best women in the business. Covering: War; Crime; Politics & Society; Sex & Romance; Body Image & Health; Family, Friendship & Birth; Emancipation & Having it All; Hearth & Home; Icons & Interviews. Including: Lynn Barber, Djuna Barnes, Julie Burchill, Angela Carter, Marie Colvin, Jilly Cooper, Joan Didion, Margaret Drabble, Helen Fielding, Zelda Fitzgerald, Kathryn Flett, Martha Gellhorn, Nicci Gerrard, Emma Goldman, Germaine Greer, Nicola Horlick, Erica Jong, Jamaica Kincaid, India Knight, Christina Lamb, Daphne du Maurier, Nancy Mitford, Suzanne Moore, Camille Paglia, Sylvia Pankhurst, Dorothy Parker, Allison Pearson, Ruth Picardie, Erin Pizzey, Eleanor Roosevelt, Zadie Smith, Susan Sontag, Gloria Steinem, Martha Stewart, Mary Stott, Jill Tweedie, Rebecca West, Zoe Williams, Jeanette Winterson, Naomi Wolf.

Book excerpt: In any person of advancing age, I doubt he or she has never said ... Knowing what I know now, I wish I could live my life over again. Foolishness? True, but still ... it’s a nice thought to linger over. The story within this novel, Once Again, relates to that engaging wish. We have two heroes in this novel and both are in the same person. That made the writing difficult at times, but I feel I made it work. Michael and Barth begin as totally different people with different minds sets ... one is a good and decent man and the other cares little for others. He gambles, carouses with women of ill repute, his curses would make a sailor blush and he, at times, hangs out with bottom feeders. Still there is something endearing about him and the two together make an interesting pair. Will this second life turn out differently than the first or does disaster wait. I feel the characters are real and interesting and at times the reader will wonder who is controlling who. As usual in my novels I have taken ordinary people and placed them in extraordinary situations. I doubt that this story line has been used before in this manner and I do hope you enjoy ... One Again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delusion, dementia or discourse? A daughter insists on the latter, and with the threads of her mother's narratives weaves for them a raft of words. These conversations, unlike anything I'd shared with her before, shocked me. I was glad they happened only when we were alone together. I'd never even thought these things I heard us say, didn't know where they came from. But since they seemed to make sense to her, I kept inviting her to speak. She'd say something, I'd listen, say something back;we were together in words. As if what we said to each other arose, not from our own learning or experience, but some underlying chord that included our voices but was bigger, spoke through them, as if the sound of the ocean were encoded in the sounds of the rain. I'll Close My Eyes(But I Won't Be Asleep)sounds an intimate, heartbreaking, and sometimes humorous, end-of-life chord in a mother and daughter relationship.A compelling memoir, I'll Close My Eyes(But I Won't Be Asleep)is an honest account of what, for most of us, remains hidden and unheard. It will be useful for anyone torn by conflicting desires and demands, battered by memory, grief and rage, and struggling to give care. Elisa Adler studied at the University of California, Berkeley, Mills College and, in Bogota, Colombia, at Centro de Estudios Colombo-Americanos. She has worked as a newspaper reporter, translator, interpreter, laborer and domestic, teaches English and Spanish at colleges in California and Nevada, and farms with her daughter and husband in the northern Sierra.

Book excerpt: Three classic works—including the virtuosic Revolutionary Road—that exemplify the remarkable gifts of this great American master "It is Yates’s relentless, unflinching investigation of our secret hearts, and his speaking to us in language as clear and honest and unadorned and unsentimental and uncompromising as his vision, that makes him such a great writer.” —Richard Russo, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Empire Falls Richard Yates’s first novel, National Book Award finalist Revolutionary Road, is the unforgettable portrait of a marriage built on dreams that tragically never come to fruition. In The Easter Parade, he tells the story of two sisters whose parents’ divorce overshadows their entire lives. And in the stories in Eleven Kinds of Loneliness, we witness men and women striving for better lives amid discouragement and disillusion.

Book excerpt: “An insightful portrait of this paradoxical woman.”—People In her compelling and intimate portrait, presidential historian Barbara A. Perry captures Rose Kennedy’s essential contributions to the incomparable Kennedy dynasty. This biography—the first to draw on an invaluable cache of Rose’s newly released diaries and letters—unearths the complexities behind the impeccable persona she showed the world. The woman who emerges in these pages is a fascinating character: savvy about her family’s reputation and resilient enough to persevere through the unfathomable tragedies that befell her. As a young woman, she defied her father, Boston mayor John Fitzgerald, by marrying ambitious businessman Joseph Kennedy. During Joe’s diplomatic career, she began carefully calibrating her family’s image, stage-managing photo shoots and interviews of her nine children and herself. After husband Joe’s isolationist views on the eve of World War II made him a political liability, Rose took to the campaign trail for son Jack. Her perfectionism, initially a response to the strictures imposed on Catholic women, ultimately created a family portrait that resonated in modern politics and media. Perry’s account looks past the fanfare, poignantly revealing the matriarch’s vulnerability. Rose sought solace from crushing personal tragedies and a philandering husband in prayer, habitual shopping, travel, and medication. Initially ashamed and afraid of daughter Rosemary’s mental disability, Rose ultimately shined a light on the affliction, raising millions of dollars for disabled children. An indefatigable campaigner for Jack, Bobby, and Teddy, she had an unshakable Catholic faith that informed their compassionate social policies and her daughters’ philanthropies. The definitive biography, Rose Kennedy provides unequaled access to the life of a remarkable woman who witnessed a century of history and masked her family’s more inconvenient truths while capturing the American imagination.
