Crowned years later as the “Goddess of the Beat Generation” by San Francisco Chronicle critic Herb Caen, weiss has worked for almost seven decades with a plurality of artistic forms. Despite her extensive poetry career and very active participation in the West Coast buzzing artistic community since the early 1950s, weiss has remained an essentially overlooked figure in poetry history. This neglect might be representative of the overshadowing of female artists within the Beat Generation as “a marginalized group within an always already marginalized bohemia” (Johnson). The volume taps directly into this lacuna by proving the first close study on one of the most prolific members of the so-called Beat Generation. Offering diverse and comprehensive points of entrance into weiss’s oeuvre, the essays in this volume adopt a multidisciplinary approach that attests to the cross-pollination between art forms in postwar counterculture. This edition is bilingual- the original text is included in the back as reference material behind the English translation. This is volume 4 in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche from Livraria Press. This chronological, systematic set of Nietzsche's works is the first ever bilingual "Hauptwerke" or complete major works of Nietzsche published in English & the original German. This work is often translated as "The dawn" or "the dawn of day". This is a poor translation of the original title "morgenrote" which refers to the reddening of the sky in the pre-dawn hours. Morgenröthe, or Morgenröte in the modern spelling, literally means "Morning-Red", a unique German word referring to the reddening of the sky in the twilight hours before daybreak. Rendering such as The Dawn of Day" or just "Daybreak", but this misses the connotations of the word. Dämmerung is "dawn", but Morgenröte is a specific phenomenon of the predawn eastern sky. In Roman mythology, there is a Goddess associated with the Morgenröte- Aurora. In Greek mythology, Homer called this the "rose-fingered Eos". This has continuity into Christianity as the Red Mass, the beginning of two different antiphons in the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church at Advent to celebrate Mary who is symbolized by the dawn, traditionally celebrated in the pre-dawn reddening of the sky. While there isn't a direct equivalent word for the pre-dawn reddening, the closest literal translation would be "The Reddening Dawn", but to capture the dramatic tone, I rendered this “The Scarlet Daybreak”. Nietzsche is speaking here of a hope for his own dawn out of the nihilism he was born into –“seine eigene Morgenröthe”. In his initial declaration of war against Metaphysics in Human, All too Human, Nietzsche writes “the will is ashamed of the intellect.” This initial foray into Schopenhauer’s philosophy of the force of the will finally manifest itself as the Willen zur Macht here in The Scarlet Daybreak. Through this lens, he takes on the whole of Christianity and the Judeo-Christian moral continuum. He considers religious experience, particularly Christianity, as a psychopathological phenomenon, an idea he articulates in every single one of his works. His perspective shifts from a Darwinian-Historical in Human, All too Human, to a more phenomenological-psychological approach here in The Scarlet Daybreak.

Book excerpt: Bilingual texts have been left outside the mainstream of both translation theory and literary history. Yet the tradition of the bilingual writer, moving between different sign systems and audiences to create a text in two languages, is a rich and venerable one, going back at least to the Middle Ages. The self-translated, bilingual text was commonplace in the mutlilingual world of medieval and early modern Europe, frequently bridging Latin and the vernaculars. While self-translation persisted among cultured elites, it diminished during the consolidation of the nation-states, in the long era of nationalistic monolingualism, only to resurge in the postcolonial era. The Bilingual Text makes a first step toward providing the fields of translation studies and comparative literature with a comprehensive account of literary self-translation in the West. It tracks the shifting paradigms of bilinguality across the centuries and addresses the urgent questions that the bilingual text raises for translation theorists today: Is each part of the bilingual text a separate, original creation or is each incomplete without the other? Is self-translation a unique genre? Can either version be split off into a single language or literary tradition? How can two linguistic versions of a text be fitted into standard models of foreign and domestic texts and cultures? Because such texts defeat standard categories of analysis, The Bilingual Text reverses the usual critical gaze, highlighting not dissimilarities but continuities across versions, allowing for dissimilarities within orders of correspondence, and englobing the literary as well as linguistic and cultural dimensions of the text. Emphasizing the arcs of historical change in concepts of language and translation that inform each case study, The Bilingual Text examines the perdurance of this phenomenon in Western societies and literatures.

Artists with hybrid identities have become a defining phenomenon of contemporary reality following the increased mobility between civilisations during the postcolonial period and the waves of emigration to the West. Cinema and prose fiction remain the most popular sources of cultural consumption, not least owing to the adaptability of both to the new electronic media. This volume considers cultural products in English and French in which the explicitly multi-focal representation of authors' experiences of their native languages/cultures makes itself conspicuous.
