It is addressed primarily to those who are undertaking a required course of study in Catholic theology at seminaries or ecclesiastical colleges. The editorial and typographical style, the choice of topics, and the extent of material covered are intended to meet the needs of such students. Nevertheless, we trust that the book will likewise be of interest for those who pursue theological and moral studies at a non specialist, though nonetheless serious level.
Book Synopsis Italian Crime Fiction by : Giulana Pieri
Download or read book Italian Crime Fiction written by Giulana Pieri and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2011-10-15 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is the first study in the English language to focus specifically on Italian crime fiction, weaving together a historical perspective and a thematic approach, with a particular focus on the representation of space, especially city space, gender, and the tradition of impegno, the social and political engagement which characterised the Italian cultural and literary scene in the postwar period. The 8 chapters in this volume explore the distinctive features of the Italian tradition from the 1930s to the present, by focusing on a wide range of detective and crime novels by selected Italian writers, some of whom have an established international reputation, such as C. E. Gadda, L. Sciascia and U. Eco, whilst others may be relatively unknown, such as the new generation of crime writers of the Bologna school and Italian women crime writers. Each chapter examines a specific period, movement or group of writers, as well as engaging with broader debates over the contribution crime fiction makes more generally to contemporary Italian and European culture. The editor and contributors of this volume argue strongly in favour of reinstating crime fiction within the canon of Italian modern literature by presenting this once marginalised literary genre as a body of works which, when viewed without the artificial distinction between high and popular literature, shows a remarkable insight into Italy’s postwar history, tracking its societal and political troubles and changes as well as often also engaging with metaphorical and philosophical notions of right or wrong, evil, redemption, and the search of the self.

Book Synopsis Methods of Murder by : Elena M. Past
Download or read book Methods of Murder written by Elena M. Past and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-03-13 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first extended analysis of the relationship between Italian criminology and crime fiction in English, Methods of Murder examines works by major authors both popular, such as Gianrico Carofiglio, and canonical, such as Carlo Emilio Gadda. Many scholars have argued that detective fiction did not exist in Italy until 1929, and that the genre, which was considered largely Anglo-Saxon, was irrelevant on the Italian peninsula. By contrast, Past traces the roots of the twentieth-century literature and cinema of crime to two much earlier, diverging interpretations of the criminal: the bodiless figure of Cesare Beccaria’s Enlightenment-era On Crimes and Punishments, and the biological offender of Cesare Lombroso’s positivist Criminal Man. Through her examinations of these texts, Past demonstrates the links between literary, philosophical, and scientific constructions of the criminal, and provides the basis for an important reconceptualization of Italian crime fiction.
Book Synopsis Towards a Unified Italy by : Salvatore DiMaria
Download or read book Towards a Unified Italy written by Salvatore DiMaria and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since unification in 1860, Italy has remained bitterly divided between the rich North and the underdeveloped South. This book examines the historical, literary, and cultural contexts that have informed and inflamed the debate on the Southern Question for over a century. It brings together analysis of cinema, literature, and newspaper archives to reconsider the myths and stereotypes that both Northerners and Southerners deploy in their narratives. Salvatore DiMaria offers a masterful assessment of the entangled issues that have produced the South’s image as impoverished and backwards, such as organized crime, illiteracy, and mass emigration. Documenting the state’s largely failed efforts to bring the South into its socio-economic fold, DiMaria also points to the future, arguing that the European Union and globalization are transformative forces that may finally produce a unified Italy.

A truly interdisciplinary work of history, politics, economics, and sociology, Mafia Brotherhoods reveals in dramatic detail the true face of one of the world's most mythologized criminal organizations.

Book Synopsis Disaster, Death and the Emotions in the Shadow of the Apocalypse, 1400–1700 by : Jennifer Spinks
Download or read book Disaster, Death and the Emotions in the Shadow of the Apocalypse, 1400–1700 written by Jennifer Spinks and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late medieval and early modern Europe, textual and visual records of disaster and mass death allow us to encounter the intense emotions generated through the religious, providential and apocalyptic frameworks that provided these events with meaning. This collection brings together historians, art historians, and literary specialists in a cross-disciplinary collection shaped by new developments in the history of emotions. It offers a rich range of analytical frameworks and case studies, from the emotional language of divine providence to individual and communal experiences of disaster. Geographically wide-ranging, the collection also analyses many different sorts of media: from letters and diaries to broadsheets and paintings. Through these and other historical records, the contributors examine how communities and individuals experienced, responded to, recorded and managed the emotional dynamics and trauma created by dramatic events like massacres, floods, fires, earthquakes and plagues.
