Book excerpt: This report provides national estimates on the availability of alternative schools and programs for students at risk of educational failure in public school districts during the 2007-08 school year. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) previously reported results from a similar survey of alternative schools and programs conducted during the 2000-01 school year (Kleiner, Porch, and Farris 2002). The estimates presented in the current report are based on an initial district survey about alternative schools and programs available to students during the 2007-08 school year and a short follow-up survey. The initial survey asked about alternative schools and programs administered by the district and covered many of the same topics included in the 2000-01 survey. The follow-up survey expanded the coverage by asking about students enrolled in the district who attended alternative schools and programs administered by an entity other than the district. Appendices include: (1) Standard Error Tables; (2) Technical Notes; and (3) Questionnaires. (Contains 32 tables and 6 footnotes.).

It highlights several successful programs and discusses what makes each a remarkable example of alternative education. It also identifies the sincere lack of empirical data regarding this success or failure. The results of a successful program are identified, and include small school size, a clear and defined purpose, devoted and highly trained staff, entrance and exit criteria and high academic expectations."--leaf 3.
Book Synopsis Effective Alternative Education Programs by : Christopher Scott Chalker
Download or read book Effective Alternative Education Programs written by Christopher Scott Chalker and published by R & L Education. This book was released on 1999 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of alternative education programs in the United States has increased significantly over the past several years. Unfortunately, the number of resource books addressing alternative education has not paralleled program growth. Filling a major gap in the literature, Chalker and Brown provide concrete solutions to challenging problems associated with the planning, development, and implementation of alternative education programs for K-8 students. They break the book into equal parts, treating, respectively, K-5, 6-8 and combined K-8 efforts at prevention and early intervention before students reach high school. Public school administrators and alternative program educators will find this book useful and educational professionals at the national and state level will appreciate the activities aimed at school improvement initiatives.

Book Synopsis Alternative Schools by : Brenda Edgerton Conley
Download or read book Alternative Schools written by Brenda Edgerton Conley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-11-22 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the growth and development of alternative schools in American society and their role in the public school environment. In Alternative Schools: A Reference Handbook, educator Brenda Edgerton Conley surveys the emerging alternatives to our conventional educational system—a system that is not only costly, but ineffective for many children. In a resource aimed at a broad audience—school administrators, politicians, and, most important, parents—Conley offers both a historical and a present-day perspective on alternative educational programs. What sets the alternative education movement apart, she argues, is its acknowledgment that we all learn differently. That knowledge has given rise to an explosion of exciting alternatives—from open schools to home schooling, from charter schools to church schools. These alternative schools are smaller and less bureaucratic, more responsive to the community, and more receptive to change.

Download or read book Alternative American Schools written by Claire V. Korn and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternative American Schools: Ideals in Action is a book for parents and teachers, for education professors, researchers, and students--indeed, for everyone who wants to understand the daily practices and philosophies of schools where awakening interests and learning how to learn is more important than content mastery. Drawing upon years of research and personal experiences, Korn clearly discusses fundamental contemporary educational issues through an analysis of seven long-lived, open, alternative schools, preschool through high school, public and private. This clearly written book explores the cooperative (and sometimes confusing) roles of teachers, students, and parents in these schools of choice; it also discusses their philosophical, financial, and physical survival needs. Once popularly dismissed as failed dreams, today these open learning environments continue to flourish and provide educational options to many enthusiastic learners.
