Cultivating positive environments and student teacher relationships with intersectional care represent important strategies to engage young Black men in education.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined the influence and repercussions of the educational laws and policies in the United States public school system for African American students in K-12 and analyzed the alternative of Black independent schools to impact the effects of racism, segregation, and prejudice for educational equality for African American students. Despite the increased segregation in public school education in the United States, there has been little to no change or alternatives to this phenomenon. The collection of research for alternative education or all Black educational institutions for African American students in the K-12 setting is minimal in their effects of overall educational experiences, academic achievement, and overall success for African American students. Most students have focused on the idea of modifying previous laws either post Jim Crow era or post-Civil Rights era, which have both resulted in disguised or soft segregation as an academic challenge instead of a systematic problem. The emergence of Black independent schools in the United States is often negated as anti-patriotic, resegregation, or altogether omitted from educational history as well as the conversation about possible solutions. The successes of the top Black independent schools in the United States are often overlooked. Thus, a representation of these achievements and their impact on African American students, as perceived by Black independent school principals, offered a comprehensive understanding of the idea in which policy and practices can combat the effects of segregation. Therefore, this study used the hermeneutic phenomenological theory in an effort to gain a deeper understanding of the best practices and the meaning of equality in educational experiences of African American students in Black independent schools versus public schools in the United States from the standpoint of Black independent school principals. The data were a combination of literary analysis and Hyncer’s (1999) five step process. In summary, the discoveries and conclusions of this study were intended to inform and educate about the best practices and successes of Black independent schools as policy alternatives and practices through data collection of the perspectives of school principals of Black independent schools in the United States.

Book excerpt: Many urban school districts in the United States now offer students nontraditional placement options. The alternative school is an option for students who have dropped out of the traditional high school, have academic or behavioral challenges or have been expelled. As African American students in urban school districts are currently overrepresented in alternative schools, the problem this study addressed was the need to better understand the lived experiences of African American students in these settings. The study specifically focused on 18-24-year-old students and examined how their perceptions of the school environment, their educational opportunities and their teachers impacted their achievement, motivation and educational outcomes. To capture diverse perspectives, participants were selected from two alternative schools in a large urban school district in the Northeast region. Data were collected through one on one and focus group interviews, classroom observations and field notes. Through an examination of the lived experiences and perceptions of African American students in these settings, the researcher endeavored to understand whether alternative high schools are meeting African American students' educational needs. The research questions that were examined are: (1) How do African American students in urban secondary alternative schools describe their lived experiences related to success, empowerment and motivation, (2) How do African American students in urban secondary alternative schools perceive the environment/culture and the educational opportunities available to them, and (3) How do African American students in urban secondary alternative schools describe the teachers who push them to excel and succeed? The six emerging themes from this study were: a) maturity and self-advocacy; b) a better opportunity/a positive climate; c) feeling respected and heard; d) it takes a village; e) relevant and rigorous instruction; and f) absence of discontinuity. Study participants reported that caring and supportive relationships with teachers, staff and administrators, a positive school climate and multiple options and resources in alternative schools have helped them to overcome challenges that they face. The participants also noted culturally responsive teaching, school cohesion and cultural congruity as factors which contribute to their motivation and success and keep them on track to graduate despite obstacles that they encounter.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: In today's public schools, African American males make up only a fraction of the total student population yet they have the highest suspension and expulsion rates (National Forum on Education Statistics, 2011; Scott, Allen, & Lewis, 2014). School districts establish alternative schools to provide opportunities for students displaying difficulties learning in traditional schools. The past several years, online learning programs have been implemented as an additional instructional method to increase academic opportunities for students. This new blended learning program is being used in hopes of providing educational credits to decrease the number of student dropouts in public schools. However, African American males attending alternative schools are directed to participate in these programs upon inception. The purpose of this study is to examine African American male students' experiences in an online learning program while attending an urban alterative school. This qualitative research study combines critical race theory concept of counter-storytelling with critical phenomenology. It provides students the opportunity to share their stories pertaining to their current academic status and a highly integrated new method of learning and instruction. It also facilitates the conversation of how online learning programs impact African American male students who met academic or behavioral challenges in traditional public schools. The participants of this study included three African American male seniors who attended an urban alternative high school and one teacher who worked in the same school during this study. Interviews, observations and field notes were used data collection methods. Each student participated in three-part interview sessions to inquire the pathway, which led them to the alternative school, experiences using online learning programs and challenges and benefits of the program. Findings indicate factors contributing to the success of online learning participation include: (1) the environment, (2) teachers, (3) sense of belonging and (4) flexibility of the program. Results from this study could benefit school administrators as they evaluate the effectiveness of online learning programs.
