Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of India is the second most populous, the seventh largest by geographical area, and has the fourth largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity in the world. While it has always been an important country, it has often been neglected. Of late, however, there has been much talk of the 'new' India, one with greater economic dynamism, a more active foreign policy, and the emergence of a huge middle class. With over a hundred new cross-referenced dictionary entries-the majority of which pertain to the last decade-and updating others, the second edition of the Historical Dictionary of India illustrates the rapidly evolving situation without neglecting the country's ancient past. The chronology has been brought up to date, the introduction expanded, and the bibliography includes numerous new titles.

Book Synopsis Mapping India's Urbanization by : J.P. Singh
Download or read book Mapping India's Urbanization written by J.P. Singh and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2022-12-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s urbanization differs markedly from that of the more developed regions. While urban growth in the more developed regions is slowing down, India’surbanization is moving with a speedy pace. India has been facing a serious problemof the rapid rise of population since the last seven decades. The huge size of urbanpopulation population has reached nearly 400 million now, while until the nineteenthcentury no developed country had a population of more than 100 million. Only a few metropolises dominate the remainder of the country so excessivelythat they prevent other parts from developing, causing increasing regionalimbalance. The rapidly increasing population requires a commensurate increasein the number of jobs in urban areas, if this population is not to starve or bereduced to total dependence. The expansion in the industrial sector of the economyhas lagged far behind the population growth. This has resulted in increasingunemployment, slums, deterioration in urban living, crime, political tension, povertyand similar other problems. It appears that India is likely to confront still greaterurban problems in future. With the hasty rise of population the quality of life inbig cities has deteriorated quite significant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pioneering environmental activist presents her most influential writings—with an informative introduction by Wendell Berry. Motivated by agricultural devastation in her home country of India, Vandana Shiva became one of the world's most influential environmental and anti-globalization activists. Her groundbreaking research has exposed the destructive effects of monocultures and commercial agriculture and revealed the links between ecology, gender, and poverty. In The Vandana Shiva Reader, Shiva assembles her most influential writings, combining trenchant critiques of the corporate monopolization of agriculture with a powerful defense of biodiversity and food democracy. This essential collection demonstrates the full range of Shiva's research and activism, from her condemnation of commercial seed technology, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and the international agriculture industry's dependence on fossil fuels, to her tireless documentation of the extensive human costs of ecological deterioration. This important volume illuminates Shiva's profound understanding of both the perils and potential of our interconnected world and calls on citizens of all nations to renew their commitment to love and care for soil, seeds, and people.

Book Synopsis Tamil Nadu, Human Development Report by : Social Science Press Staff
Download or read book Tamil Nadu, Human Development Report written by Social Science Press Staff and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Tamil Nadu's first Human Development Report. Tamil Nadu has fared very well in human development among the States in India. It needs to be noted, however, that there are vast variations in the indicators of Human development within the State itself. Factors contributing to human development are disaggregated in this Report, and analysed at the district level. This will enable readers to understand the regional disparities in Tamil Nadu and the reasons behind them. The Report not only puts within one cover all the various aspects of human development in Tamil Nadu but also seeks to explain why the State has fared well in certain areas and not in others. It also highlights the policy interventions that will be required to correct the imbalances.
